Great Column on the New Youngstown State Coaching Staff

Post by guinzone »

This is a must read for our friends in the MVFC and all those in the FCS. Check out this column by Anthony Paneech on the coaching staff Youngstown State Head Coach Eric Wolford put together after he was hired December 15, 2009. It has got to be one of the deepest coaching staffs at this level with a lot of BCS/FBS talent/experience joining Wolford.

Dude if you guys do anything short of make it to the semi-finals and win conference this year with how you're talking up your team I will be very disappointed.

Haha. I am expecting 7 wins, 8 at the most this year. We got a ways to go my friend after the past few years. However we are not too far off. We gave you guys a battle here in Youngstown last season, though we could not find the endzone.

True enough. My personal opinion of how we played be darned, it definitely was a good game. Can't wait to eat some penguin at the tailgate before playing you guys

I'm with Thumper on this. Doing my predictions I found myself really debating how good YSU would be. Listening to the way they talk about their new coach you would think they got Bear Bryant reanimated and they brought in Florida's recruiting class, and half of Alabama's roster along with them.

I understand the excitement with the new staff. I don't feel, HOWEVER, that THEstaff is any better than any staff in the MVFC, and isn't on par with Farley and Co at UNI and Lennon and Co at SIU.

Our secret weapon to beat SIU this year is Longo, who was their Offensive Coordinator there the past few years. Again the coaching staff can only go so far to getting the team to win, the real question is whether we have the athletes to win 7-8 games. Right now I would say it is is dependent on our QB play. If we get a QB transfer, like everyone is expecting, our chances of success this year rise dramatically. If we do not, we will have a RS Freshmen and a Freshmen, that some said was the best QB in Ohio, battling for the starting job.

Once again, it all depends on the QB play. At RB, we are as deep as we ever have been. However our OL play has been just ugly in recent years. Defense look for a lot more blitzing. Special Teams are VERY shaky, hence the reason Wolford has said starters from the O and D will be on the special teams this year.

Whether the staff is on par with Farley or the rest of the MVFC remains to be seen --however with Heacock gone UNI may not get its automatic W.

As a fan of FCS football I would watch out for Youngstown ST. They have assembled a top notch staff for our level of play and are off to a good recruiting start. If Farley and the UNI staff are so great then why does UNI choke in the playoffs each year and better yet at home. I think with the talent UNI has had they have vastly underachieved over the years. Farley gets out coached in the playoffs. I hear Youngstown is in the hunt for some serious Florida talent for 2011 that may surprise all of us.

You know, son, I don't care if UNI goes 1-10 as long as they beat Youngstown State. So there.

You clearly are a YSU fan mascaraing as a FCS fan.

It's not like Farley hasn't won the coach of the year award, or been finalists a couple more times or anything. It's not like that coaching staff has UNI at the top of the conference fighting for the title every single year, regardless what players were gone from the year before.

How good a staff is doesn't depend on one game a year.

Well lets see here. Head Coach is a former OL/Run Game coach in the SEC. We have a former FBS head coach in Montgomery. We have a DL coach (not an asst. DL coach, the DL coach) from Kansas that has coached in the Big 12 and Big 10 the past 9 years. We have a DC that was in the same position down at South Florida. A coach from Arizona and Akron. Three or four with NFL experience. A STOOPS brother. And yes, I can go on and on.

We are targeting the Tampa Bay region of Florida. Defensive Coordinator Rick Kravitz has inroads down there from his days at USF and it may pay off bigtime for YSU. We have offered 10 kids from down there for 2011, all of which have FBS offers and some of which that are being visited by Florida and Georgia.

Again, this season is a tough one to predict with a new staff and a lot of new personnel on offense, but for years to come we look like we are rebuilding into an FCS power.

Check out the Florida recruits we have offered here: http://www.letsgoguins.com/recruiting/f ... iting-2011" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hand em the trophy right now and cancel the season, they have former fbs coaches. They have recruits from Florida, best coaching staff ever.

Is YSU so far in the shitter that they think they are the only school going after kids from Florida and are the only school that have offers out to kids with "looks" from FBS schools?

Newsflash a couple years ago UNI had a dozen kids from florida on their roster, many of them with "looks" from the Florida FBS schools.

Thanks for finally catching up with UNI, SIU, and even SDSU in terms of where to recruit

Wow, do you know how to read? I said most of the kids we offered have FBS scholarship offers, with a few getting looked at by Florida, Miami (FL), Florida State, and Georgia.

Anyways since you obviously will not take the time to look at the 10 kids we offered, here are the FBS schools they have offers to:
-Purdue, Colorado State, New Mexico, Washington State, Western Kentucky, and Florida International.

And Wolford knows how to recruit, if you read up on him, he was known as one of the best recruiters in America in the last few years. At Illinois and South Carolina, he stole a number of 4-5 star recruits from the likes of Ohio State, Auburn, Florida, and Georgia.

BTW: In the 2010 class, we signed a few kids from Florida. One of which is 4-star running back Adaris Bellamy that had offers to South Florida, Mississippi, Cincinnati, Iowa State, and Clemson.

I'm saying you aren't the only program that has offers out to kids with FBS offers. I'm not impressed when you say that. No team in the FCS should be.

We also signed a 4 star running back with offers from the following schools:
Cincinnati
Illinois
Iowa
Iowa State
Kansas
Minnesota
Northern Illinois
Purdue
Wisconsin

I'm glad you are finally catching up in terms of recruiting with the rest of the teams in the valley, it will only make the conference better. Having a team that was as good in the 90's as YSU be good again will also help the FCS as a whole.

Dawson was a 4 start coming out of high school. however, he signed with an FCS school. Many times when a player signs with an FCS school they will drop in rankings. In the rankings the Iowa high school site put out a week before signing day he was #2 in the state of Iowa with a note saying he was pushing for the #1 player in the state. He was a 4 star from Rivals and Scout.

Then comes signing day, the #1 and #3 players in the state sign with Iowa and Dawson signs with UNI. All of a sudden he falls in all of the rankings.

He is also from Iowa. Players, no matter how good, from Iowa have a tough time getting the national respect they deserve compared to those from Florida, CA, GA, TX, AR, AL, etc...

OT: YSU has offered a stud WR named Darius Patton from the Youngstown area. His father was Sean Patton (RB) from the 1994 National Championship team.

Here are his offers: West Virginia, Cincinnati, Michigan, Syracuse, Michigan State, Boston College, Wisconsin, Kansas, Indiana, Bowling Green, Toledo, Miami (OH), Kent State, and YSU.

Personally I think that the dumbest dick measuring contests are the ones that are about recruits. Just my two cents of course, but I think that the star system is a joke and each coach knows who the really good guys out there are, and you never know how they are gunna turn out.

First of all, I think we, as in YSU, brought in a very good recruiting class in the Valley, and it only took us like 6 weeks. The best class was UNI, and its a impressive one from production to game film, and It's a toss up between YSU and SIU for the second best. But overall I think the Valley did a good job recruiting, even Indiana State. I'm just proud that we play in the BEST conference in the Missouri Valley!!! And you can quote me on that too  .

And whoever gets into the playoffs from our conference I always support. I was soo excited that South Dakota State was kicking Montana's butt before they made a late surge and won. I'm always proud that whoever comes out this conference always has a shot to make it to the championship game.

As far as Coach Wolford, he is one of the best recruiters around. His resume proves that wherever he's been. I mean South Carolina's Offensive Line and the running game was improved a lot from previous years. And he was a big part on that Illinois team in '08 that knocked off my #1 team Ohio State and went to the Rose Bowl. He's seen everything in the College game and that's gonna help us a lot; I thought he was a better candidate than Mark Stoops, who's now the DC at Florida State. So YSU's future is looking bright, but we have to prove it first.

Now this year YSU has already offered 11 recruits and I have to say they're pretty impressive. I would like to have all of those guys sign with us, but that's most likely not going to happen. But we're off to a great start right now and the people we'll probably offer from our area besides Poland WR Darius Patton, like Ursuline QB Paul Kempe, Ursuline RB Akise Teague, Girard WR Landon Smith, Liberty S Charles Perdue, Cardinal Mooney DT Michael Rossi, just to name a few, would be great signs for are team. And while signing players from the South like Florida and Georgia and recruiting the whole state of Ohio helps, but signing players from our area and "putting a fence around it" really helps us cause the YSU teams in the '90's, the majority of the roster was our local players cause we have very good talent here. So that's also important and Wolford knows that. We'll wait 2-3 year when he finally has the players that he wants and see if we can return back to the playoffs and maybe contend for National Championships, but we'll see........

As far as how many games we're going to win, I can see us winning 9 games maybe, but I can also see us losing 8 games, meaning 3 wins. It wouldn't surprise me. Now we all know we're gonna loose to Penn State, but I expect us to compete and give them a game. But its not gonna be a blowout after watching Penn State's Spring Game. Butler can be an upset cause they have some guys that can play and a pretty good Qb. But well' win. Then we got Central Connecticut State, which will be a easy blowout win. Then comes conference play.... which I think we can have a record of 6-2 at best, 4-4, or 2-6. Even if we get a Transfer Qb. Yeah we have talent, but we don't have enough depth at a lot of positions and new personnel and a coach and staff. So don't be surprised if we finish 3-8, but I wouldn't be surprised if we finished 9-2. But you have to play the games first lol :D .

And as for Dawson, I believe I did see him ranked as a 4-star on rivals. But most of the time he was a 3-star. And they didn't lower his star rank just because he didn't sign with a "BIG" school......that's retarted. He still signed with a good school and program so you shouldn't be disappointed that he's a 3-star. I mean, come on, he's one of, if not, the best recruit in your class......

Overall I can't wait for this upcoming season because of not just YSU or Ohio State football, but college football in general

Yes, it is "retarded" but I worked for Rivals for four years, I know how their system works. I watch a kid go from a low 2 star ranking to a 5 star in a week because he went from FCS and Sun Belt offers to some B12 offers. The star system is completely fucked up and has little or no bearing as to how good a recruit is. It's all about who is recruiting you, how you perform at camps, and how much publicity you get out there with your name.

It's gonna be tougher for schools to get kids out of the Tampa Bay area with Skip Holtz in town. They're trying to lock down the area which is something Leavitt never really did. Gonzales and Williams will be big time players this season, I expect more offers to come rolling in over the summer. I wouldn't be surprised if the same happens with the Armwood kids, especially if they're as successful as they've traditionally been.
