More and more (good)catholics are speaking out against the vatican. Apologists (Jolt, Hen, Hogan) take warning. God bless Sinead O'Connor and Hans Kung

Sinead also recently appeared on The Rachel Maddow Show via satellite to affirm her faith in the Catholic Church – except for the people who are running it.

“I feel the Holy Spirit is being held hostage by the people who are presently running the Catholic Church(*And the evil people who defend them ). The Catholic Church is full of beautiful people, men and women, you know, who have given up their whole lives, who serve human beings, (*Like me and Andy and Fatamountman )” she said.

“But those people also are being betrayed by the people who are running the church (*and their defenders)."

Amazing, the grief she got for tearing up the picture of the pope on TV, only to find some 20 years later, she was absolutely right. The catholic church is filled with wonderful people like D1B, Andy and Sinead O'Connor, it's the fucking pope and cronies in the Vatican who are ruining it for everyone. If the church is the people, then get rid of em.

I think this thread was first started back in the '80's (well, maybe they waited for the internet to be invented before they posted it) when she had her hit song come out and then she tore a picture of the Pope while on Saturday Night Live. Heck, I think Dana Carvey was still on staff at SNL back then. (*note - not absolving the Pope and the Church hierarchy of the blame and emnity they well deserve, just noting that it's not really newsworthy that Sinead O'Connor is speaking out against the Pope - she's always done that).

Well, John Paul II's potential involvement in the scandal was far different that what Benedict's potential involvement in the scandal could be - that's a pretty big difference. Besides, what she did at the time was ineffective - by tearing up a picture of the Pope she ended up having people focus on that rather than the message. Didn't matter much in the US since there was already significant focus on the issue anyway. She was right in the message (speaking out against child abuse) but flubbed the delivery.

People don't like the heirarchy of the Catholic Church yet they still want to be Catholic. If you don't like it, get out. That was the case then and now. Unfortunately because of the way she lashed out indiscriminately, she was ignored.

I have often wondered if there isn't something close-to-home about this issue for her but her reasoning about why the Catholic Church was responsible for abuse within families always struck me as pretty strange. I don't know much about her and I find it hard to be critical of someone whose experiences and motivations are unknown to me.

I don't believe that's a fair point - I think there's a lot more to being Catholic than just the heirarchy as I believe the Church is far more than just the heirarchy. I certainly think the point that it's not a Democracy is very valid, it isn't nor should it be, but your post seems to make the stance that the hierarchy is not to be questioned or faulted when clearly it has its flaws. I don't think me saying that makes me any less Catholic.

There are many good things about the catholic church. I can see why people want to stay in the fold.

While I like em, quitters (Fatamountman) and apologists (Jolting Joe) are weakening our church. Just like the atheists and secularists and free thinkers did throughout history to improve the church as well as the right of man, people need to force meaningful change from the pews - most importantly getting rid of the Vatican.
