Korean War 2

Post by bluehenbillk »

Does it happen?

How's the fighting break out?

How quickly & to what extent does the USA & China jump in?

Will this effect the South Korean short track speed skating team in the next Olympics??

I'm not a military strategist, but I've played as Master Chief which has gotta give me some credibility. Anyways, I doubt this war would last long if it ever did happen. According to analysts on the radio, this is probably not gonna be guerrilla warfare or anything somilar...this is about as conventional as it's gonna get and South Korea would be able to take on North Korea (if China doesn't back up the DPKR) by itself if it came down to it. North Korea has 3% GDP of South Korea, and South Korea spends 2.6% of its GDP on its military alone plus some. It's all smoke and mirrors for the DPKR.

However the radio did say this morning that the US and South Korea have begun military exercises together. What I'm wondering is did they ever stop those exercises though?

Really? Doesn't North Korea tout a 1.2 million army? Obviously that's just a # and doesn't speak to the quality of their military but I don't think this is an Iraq. I'd think if no other countries including us stepped in that the South would be in big trouble.

The big differences are:
* the sheer number of troops the North controls
* how close Seoul is to the border and the huge civilian population there
* If the DPRK were to begin to lose the war, I don't think they have any problem using the nuclear option

IMO, China and Russia would likely quietly acknowledge that the DPRK is a rogue state. That being said, they wouldn't stand idly by as the US backed the South right in their backyards. Lots of opportunity for this to escalate quickly, but I think it's probably a lot of sabre rattling like it's been for 50 yrs.

Of course, all of this is based on my extensive experience playing Call of Duty and Modern Warfare.

The North Koreans kick the South's butt every year during Ulchi Focus Lens. In 1989 I was the commander of all North Korean artillery. You can't imagine the damage I did. I even got a phone call from the US 2nd Division commander who chewed my ass out for destroying his division headquarters.

The South Korean navy was sunk in the first 12 hours of the exercise. I personally witnessed the chairman of the South Korean joint chiefs of staff fire about a half dozen admirals for that debacle.

If it did happen, South Korea would be absolutely devastated - the North could inflict a bunch of damage right away before we could intervene. But I don't think China would stop us from intervening this time if the North did something like that - China can't afford to be an international pariah anymore and they couldn't stand behind the North if they waged the war they are capable of against the South.

The North would totally destroy the South if we weren't there. And if things didn't go as smoothly for NK, nuclear options is very much on the table.

That said, Russia and China yank hard on the lease if something were to start.

The North might not win the war, but Seoul would get toasted. Close to 40% of the South Korean population lives in Seoul and its suburbs.

Yup, I agree completely. In a war the South gets destroyed, and the North gets destroyed if we aren't interfered with by China. Just a horrible situation for the entire penisula if war actually does happen.

I'd agree with everything in these posts...except...I think China will hammer NK at the last moment...before anything starts...because Beijing cannot afford to have this kind of discord on its border...

While in the reserves, I was attached to a construction batallion union out of Chinhae (just West of Busan)...the "battle plan" if the bubble went up was to have our unit outfitted, trained up, on a plane and in-country in 14-days. Unfortunately, NoKor's battle plan is to take the entire penninsula in SEVEN days. I'm guessing that the 38,000 US troops stationed in Korea wouldn't be much of a match for the NoKor army, regardless of it's training and equipment deficiencies and I put VERY little stock in the SoKor Navy or Army regular forces.

It looks like the world is headed for another showdown with North Korea. Which means get ready for another all-out assault of over-the-top rhetoric from the Kim Jong-il regime. To get us all ready for the verbal barrage, the handy NK News site has put together a random insult generator, drawing from some of the goofiest jeremiads of Pyongyang’s official news agency

North Korean Press Conference

Hello I am the new spokesman for the North Korean Government, my name is Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf, you may remember me from such military actions as the Iraq War.

I am here today to speak for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Can you tell us why you have attacked South Korea?
It has been rumored that we have fired nuclear warhead missiles into South Korea. I am here now to tell you, we do not have any nuclear warhead missiles and I don't know why they were fired into South Korea.

What is your assessment of the situation?
Our initial assessment is that they will all die.

Has the South passed over the border into the North yet?
There are no South Korean infidels in North Korea. Never!
