Stone: Film an intro to Chavez and his movement

"CARACAS, Venezuela — American filmmaker Oliver Stone said Friday he deeply admires Hugo Chavez but suggested the Venezuelan president might consider talking a bit less on television.

Promoting his new documentary "South of the Border" in Caracas, Stone heaped praise on Chavez, saying he is leading a movement for "social transformation" in Latin American. The film features informal interviews by Stone with Chavez and six allied leftist presidents, from Bolivia's Evo Morales to Cuba's Raul Castro.

"I admire Hugo. I like him very much as a person. I can say one thing. ... He shouldn't be on television all the time," Stone said at a news conference. "As a director I say you don't want to be overpowering. And I think he is sometimes that way."

Chavez makes near-daily speeches that run for hours, often reminiscing, lecturing about history, announcing news and breaking into song. His Sunday program can last six hours or more.

"He's a soldier and he speaks from his heart," Stone said. "His vision is huge. ... And he will go down in history."

The Oscar-winning director hopes his documentary will help people better understand a leader who Stone said is wrongly ridiculed "as a strongman, as a buffoon, as a clown."

"This is a positive portrayal of a man who Americans do not have access to," Stone said. "He is demonized in the American and European press as a monster."

Chavez, who joined Stone for the premiere of the film at last year's Venice Film Festival, hosted a screening Friday night at a Caracas theater and called the director a good friend.

"They demonize us is North America, in Europe, in a good part of the world. And Oliver dove is, so to speak, seeking the truth," Chavez said. He called the movie "a splinter in the eagle's talon" — a reference to the United States."

What is it with the "Progressive" American Left and their absolute fawning over thug dictatorial regimes? :?

How do they love him....let me count the ways...

He supresses the media that speaks against him...the way they wish BHO would supress media groups like Fox...
He nationalizes the oil industry...they way the left wishes BHO would nationalize our oil industry (That one's for you, jon)
He has nationalized medical care...the way leftists hoped BHO would have with the failed legislation passed recently...
Everyone in Venezuela gets welfare/food stamp-type supports...the way progressives want BHO to do with stimulus money here...

After doing some of my own research on Chavez I learned a lot...
I of course because CNN ABC NBC Fox and all U.S. Media conglomerates tell me he's a dictator that's what I assumed and that seemed fine... but I looked deeper and searched for more information

How much personal research have you done on Chavez..?

I suggest we question the common perception spoon fed to us...
He's a complex character - not exactly what the US Media and our Federal Govt. would like us to believe
Do I like him...
I'm now "neutral" regarding him... but he's no more of a dictator than Obama or Bush

You're "neutral" on his government nationalizing industries???

I'm a small government guy, but I'm neutral on those things. It's their country...if nationalizing industries is working out for them, then so be it. I'm opposed to their media outlets being cracked down on, but again, it's really not an issue I'm gonna worry about. One thing I like about Obama is that he does want to actively engage in talking to countries that are our "enemies." I don't really think it shows weakness or anything like that. This isn't the Cold War era anymore...this is a time where globalization is very much real and can't be stopped. It's a time where younger generations are growing up connected to people half way around the world. We have nothing to lose by talking to people we didn't like in the past. Not one country shares our constitution, and I think conservatives (maybe not conservatives...the far-right really) are gonna be left behind if they don't begin to embrace this idea.

ha ha ha... (right, you're joking of course, no..?)

1) Our media outlets in the U. S. don't need to be controlled by the federal government because they're already completely under control... and I mean completely

2) Our industries were nationalized long ago - the recent bailouts only go to expose that relationship

Give me something to work with Col Hogan... because I know you can't be serious - so because Chavez does overtly what we've done secretly he's a bad guy

Like I said:
Do some serious research on him - not CNN FOX spoon fed news - then tell me he's a villain
I don't see him as a good guy or a bad guy - but he's NOTHING like we're told

Here's a video clip (it's long) but interesting
It's a complete 180 degree different view that we're presented by CNN NBC Fox and ABC...
It's a bit overly romantic but it makes an incredible point...

These comments form 2006 were pretty funny, and the line about "democracy of the elite" was a good one. :thumb:

Chavez tells UN Bush is 'devil'

Venezuela's leader Hugo Chavez has called US President George W Bush "the devil" in a speech at the United Nations General Assembly.
"The devil came here yesterday," he said, referring to Mr Bush's speech on Tuesday. "It still smells of sulphur today," he added.

US State Department spokesman Tom Casey said it was disappointing to see a head of state speak in such a way.

Mr Chavez went on to criticise the UN system, which he said was "worthless".
The left-wing Venezuelan leader - allied to Cuba's Fidel Castro and with growing ties to fellow oil-producer Iran - has long had tense relations with the US.

On Tuesday, Mr Bush had defended his policies on the Middle East and said democracy was gaining ground as terrorists were marginalised.

Mr Chavez, who brandished a copy of American leftist writer Noam Chomsky's Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance, said Mr Bush promoted "a false democracy of the elite" and a "democracy of bombs".

"He came here talking as if he were the owner of the world," the Venezuelan leader said.

I could care less what Chavez does.

The only thing that concerns me is all the money we will send Venezuela 20 years from now after he is strung up from a tree in a coup and the once sh!thole country - now uber sh!thole country falls into anarchy.

Personally I say don't send them a dime. Even when the UN starts demanding US action over the humanitarian crisis that ensues after the failure of yet another anti-American worker's utopia.

Sort of a Monroe Doctrine in reverse.

It is quite refreshing for you to actually admit that the media is in the tank for Obama.

Other than that enlightening jewel, you didn't really add much to the conversation. To remind you, the article I linked to at the beginning of the thread is from the AP, not CNN or FOX or ABC, NBC, CBS, etc......

I have never defended the U.S. media machine... it's a complete farce
and has been ever since I can remember

After living in Europe for a while and then coming home to America to listen to Ronald Reagan call the Soviet Union the Evil Empire and see the media eat that up... from that point forward even as a teenager I knew something was seriously wrong

All empires are the same... we just happen to like ours - it's a nice position
The Reagan political policy in Central and South America (and for the past 85 year) isn't any different than what any other Empire does - it's just the way it is... Insert puppet / capitalize and control their resources at pennies on the dollar / act horrified when there's a revolution / insert new puppet / re-establish control of the resources / act horrified when theirs a revolution / repeat as necessary...

Say what?

Ronald Reagan was eviscerated by the American press for calling the USSR an "Evil Empire". In what alternate universe do you live? If any press were to "eat that up" it would have been the European press who had to actually live in the shadow of the Soviets with their missiles deployed in eastern Europe pointed straight at them.

You need to go back several more years to see exactly how US policy in Central and South America started. That 'great' "Progressive" Woodrow Wilson intervened with military force more times in Central America and the Caribbean than any president in history. That allowed him to shape the direction of that part of the world and allowed the US to install repressive military puppet dictatorships all throughout Latin America.
