Joyce admits he blew the call
Umpire admits he missed call that would have ended gam

The veteran ump regretted it.
“I just cost that kid a perfect game,” Joyce said. “I thought he beat the throw. I was convinced he beat the throw, until I saw the replay.”
“It was the biggest call of my career,” said Joyce, who became a full-time major league umpire in 1989.
Galarraga retired the next hitter, Trevor Crowe, to complete the one-hitter.
As the Tigers came on the field to celebrate, a few of them accosted Joyce. Leyland got into a more vigorous argument with Joyce than after the play first happened. The Tigers’ bench clearly had gotten the news that the replay indicated that Donald was out.

i went back and looked at several of the vandalizms, and unless there were some good ones I didnt click on all I can say is Detroit fans are weak. Had this call gone against Boston, or New York or Philadelphia.... there would have been some classic changes made in there.Ursus A. I would guarantee you that regardless of what Selig does with this (and I wholeheartedly agree that Detroit should have had the red flag option), if the other team had been Milwaukee, Selig would shove it in Detroit's face.

Wondering how all you guys who jumped on Joyce feel today after hearing his apology and how classy the Tigers have been about it.

Re: UNFUCKING BELIEVABLE: FIRE THAT UMPIRE!
It was classy, but it doesn't change the fact that he blew a huge call that denied the 21st perfect game in MLB history.89Hen wrote:Wondering how all you guys who jumped on Joyce feel today after hearing his apology and how classy the Tigers have been about it.
And if you want to talk about classy, I think Galaragga himself was the most classy of the bunch. The class it takes to smile a half second after an ump steals your date with history... wow.

Hey, can't get too upset about the ump - he made a call, realized he blew it, and apologized to those involved - it happens, there are bad calls in every game every day. With that said, the real anger should be at Major League baseball and Selig and company. It's not that hard to come up with a replay system that will work. Heck, just tell the Yanks and Sox to stay in the batter's box and just the time you save from that alone will keep the average gametime down even with extensive replay being introduced.

Re: UNFUCKING BELIEVABLE: FIRE THAT UMPIRE!
Pretty unbelievable. On a play that close, the ump should just call him out no matter what. What would make people angrier? The fact that he got it wrong and cost the pitcher a perfect game or if he had called a safe runner out on the play?

Re: UNFUCKING BELIEVABLE: FIRE THAT UMPIRE!
Hopefully, this will get the old school, tradition-bound office geeks in MLB headquarters in NYC to get off their duffs and get some smart people into a room to quickly develop a replay system for baseball...
No replay on balls and strikes (to include check swings)...but replays on calls like this that are bang-bang...
Umpires are TRAINED to use both their eyes and ears, since they can't see both the ball/glove area and the base...if you think you can, you are more cross-eyed than I am...
So they are taught to listen for the ball hitting the glove and watch the foot hitting the bag...
I can only image the noise level on the potential last out of a no-hitter...
Yea...He blew the call...yea, the pircher simply smiled and returned to the mound...and, yea, the ump watched the replay after the game and was extremely classly going over to the Detroit clubhouse and apologizing to the pitcher, admitting he blew the call...
I notice the ump is a HUMAN...he made a mistake...he fessed up...
Travis, should he still be fired??? I say definately not...we need more classy people like that in the world...

To all of you folks out there wishing the worst on this guy, you really are scum. He copped to it right after the game, personally apologized, the player laughed it off and has ZERO hard feelings, he, player, has said the ump probably feels worse than he does, why judge a guy for .1 second of a 22 year career??? Really classy as always UNH.

Re: UNFUCKING BELIEVABLE: FIRE THAT UMPIRE!
Agree with everything you said Col, but in this particular situation, the guy just has to make the out call. This isn't the time to split hairs and try to maintain what you perceive to be millisecond integrity.
How many times at the end of a game that isn't close do you see the strike zone get bigger? Is integrity a big deal to umps in that situation? How, how, HOW can you call the runner safe if the play is that close, knowing the situation? The game was not on the line, but the 21st perfect game in MLB history was. I like to think I have great integrity, don't go out of my way to break the law, etc, etc, but there's a time and a place for that. You just have to get that call right.
Selig needs to overrule the call for "the best interests of baseball". If he doesn't, he just validates his schmuckdom.

I certainly don't "wish the worst" on the guy, but would it not be prudent to keep him out of the all-star game and the playoffs this year? I don't know what the union's contract states for umps, but this was a blown call, and one that impacts a key statistic in the history books. There has to be some disincentive for umpires to do their job poorly.grizzaholic wrote:To all of you folks out there wishing the worst on this guy, you really are scum. Re: UNFUCKING BELIEVABLE: FIRE THAT UMPIRE!
So one blown call on a season of games he gets punished for? I guess we need instant replay on every call, whether it be balls and strikes, catches, home runs, fouls, outs...etc I guess that will make this game more fun.93henfan wrote:I certainly don't "wish the worst" on the guy, but would it not be prudent to keep him out of the all-star game and the playoffs this year? And 22 years of doing a great job is thrown out the window for once missed call?
If I was your boss and you worked your ass off every day and turned in exeptional work each and every day for 20 years and then one day you handed me some sub-par crap I should suspend you, fine you, and give you a few days off to think about your actions, whether it was an honest mistake on your part or not? All the while not counting any of your past work into the situation?

Not IMO. He is one of the most respected umps in baseball by the players.93henfan wrote:would it not be prudent to keep him out of the all-star game and the playoffs this year?

Re: UNFUCKING BELIEVABLE: FIRE THAT UMPIRE!
It's easy for us fuckers to sit here, see the replay hundreds of times on TV and saw he made the wrong call. How many of you fuckers have ever umped a game? I'm not talking little league, t-ball, or even fucking middle school. I'm talking baseball at a high level (high school and up). If you have umped those games, you've missed at least one call. Hell, I can go back to a game last year where I probably missed 2 or 3 calls at first base due to the speed of the runner and the throw. I don't know for sure, and thankfully I don't have the nation calling for me to be fired form the state association, defaming my name on the internet, sending me death threats, etc... all over a fucking game.
Yes, I realize it would have been historic but you all need to realize IT'S A GOD DAMMED GAME. No one is going to be any smarter, dumber, faster, slower, have a better job, worse job, hotter significant other, etc... because of the call. Had this call happened in the first inning it wouldn't be an issue. Had this call happened and their had been a hit earlier in the game it isn't even talked about.
Unless you have been in the situation to make calls on bang bang plays like that and you have NEVER missed one sit down and shut the fuck up.
Oh, and Joyce is probably top 5 in terms of the best umps in baseball.
I do think, and have thought for a long time, that with the technology that we have that instant replay needs to be implements for bang bang plays on base, whether or not the guy pulled his foot, home runs, fair/foul, but NEVER for balls and strikes.

Re: UNFUCKING BELIEVABLE: FIRE THAT UMPIRE!
Here's a more fitting analogy. Let's say that about twenty times every 130 years in my company a major project comes along. My boss gives me the responsibility for this project and I botch it. I think it would be fitting that my boss not give me another project of that magnitude again until I can regain the trust that I am capable of handling it.grizzaholic wrote:If I was your boss and you worked your ass off every day and turned in exeptional work each and every day for 20 years and then one day you handed me some sub-par crap I should suspend you, fine you, and give you a few days off to think about your actions, whether it was an honest mistake on your part or not? That's all I'm saying. Guys get old, their reflexes slow, and their judgement gets worse. It happens to all of us. Being "classy" about your screwup doesn't make you any less responsible for your actions than the old driver who plows over a cyclist. The penalty for the latter should be jail. The penalty for the former should be being withheld from working high profile games for a probationary period, IMHO.
