U.S. men greeted by high-profile security
Image
The United States squad arrived in Johannesburg on Monday following a 17-hour flight, with visible security for the Americans' high-profile arrival ahead of the World Cup no different to that which greeted other teams in South Africa.

Armed special task-force members, dressed in dark blue uniforms, surrounded the South African Airways plane at the O.R. Tambo airport as the players emerged on a cool, overcast afternoon.

Giuseppe Rossi Dropped From Italy’s World Cup Squad!
Image
New Jersey-born striker Giuseppe Rossi gave up his chance to play for the U.S. in favor of making the Italy squad, and looked to be a lock to make the team this summer. In a surprising move, Marcelo Lippi left the Villarreal striker off his final 23-player roster in favor of Fabio Quagliarella

It is a little great to see him not make the final squad. Especially after he played so well in the confederations cup against us.

Minor sprain. Tests came back negative. He's listed as day-to-day. Don't play him on saturday and he'll be fine.

Your point? Soccer is an inferior sport but the World Cup is an exceptional spectacle. Do you ever watch swimming on TV or attend? I sure don't , but I sure as hell watched all of Michael Phelp's races in the Olympics. I watched every US game in the last two WC's and will do so again this time. Doesn't change that fact that professional soccer sucks.

Didier Drogba, the Ivory Coast captain, will undergo an emergency operation today in an attempt to save his chances of participating in the World Cup. The striker was initially reported to have been ruled out of the tournament after dislocating his elbow in today's friendly against Japan but, according to the French sports newspaper L'Equipe, he will have surgery and could be fit for his country's opening match against Portugal in 10 days' time.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010 ... cup-injury" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Drogba left the pitch holding his right arm and it has been confirmed that the Chelsea striker has sustained a fractured elbow. Ivory Coast defender Kolo Toure says his colleague will not be able to play in South Africa.

"For him, he said, the World Cup is finished," Toure said. "We can just see on his face that he was sad and when he is like that you can't ask more. It is difficult for us because he is such a really important player."

However, Ivory Coast are remaining optimistic about Drogba's condition before definitive medical results are available.

"It's a fracture in his arm," a spokesman said. "The doctor hasn't said yet whether he can play in the World Cup. We don't know if he will be able to play the first game - that depends on the verdict of the medical team. But he's definitely not out.

Drogba's absence would come as a huge setback to Ivory Coast coach Eriksson, who already has the daunting task of facing Brazil, Portugal and North Korea in Group G.

They were already in a tough group... if Drogba doesn't make it back, Brazil and Portugal advance easily. I'd pick those two anyway, even if Drogba is playing.

Rio Ferdnand out too:
So, farewell then Rio Ferdinand. Not the back in the end: instead it is a knee injury that has ruled England's captain out of a place at his fourth consecutive World Cup. And so England's squad, billed in some quarters as a last, final, one-more-time hurrah for an internationally unfulfilled generation of talented Premier League thirtysomethings, begins to look even more unexpectedly diffuse and stitched together.

So if professional soccer sucks then the PGA Tour and MLB must really friggin' blow because watching them is like watching paint dry. :D
