Nebraska Controls Fate Of Big XII

Post by UNHWildCats »

If Nebraska stays in the Big XII then Texas and the others appear to be on board to stay as well, however if Nebraska bolts for the Big Ten, Texas, Oklahoma, Baylor and others will follow Nebraska out of the conference.

Big XII officials have reportedly given Nebraska a Friday deadline to decide whether they will stay or not, and any guarantee will likely need to be made in a signed contract by Nebraska. Conference officials seem less concerned about possibly losing Missouri.

Meantime, should Nebraska not guarantee its future with the conference and other teams begin looking elsewhere, Colorado may find itself on the outside looking in in the proposed Pac 10 expansion as political pressure apparently has already begun to get Baylor in with the other Texas schools.

Based on the offer the six schools got from the Pac-10, I'm not sure why they'd wait until Friday. I think they're gonzo.

Pac 10 will officially invite six teams this week to join the conference. Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are all but guaranteed to be invited. The sixth invite will go to either Baylor or Colorado and will come down to how much influence the 15 Baylor alum that reside in the Texas Legislature can wield.

The Big XII schools are expected to wait until its Friday deadline to Nebraska and Missouri before accepting a Pac 10 offer, if Nebraska and Missouri guarantee they will stay, the others appear to be more interested in maininging the status quo.

This is interesting, because I thought I read recently that Nebraska could be the odd school out. Which just baffles the mind when you think about the amount of student and alumn isupport that school has, even if they haven't been a power school of late.
And can someone explain to me how Baylor has any say in anything going on here? Is it really just because some of their alumni are in the Texas legislature? Lord knows it's not because their football team could barely beat a women's football team from the Sacred City.

Baylor got into the Big 12 to begin with because the Governor of Texas at the time was a Baylor alum...

What do you mean odd school out?

Basically the Big Ten is targeting them. The Big XII wants to know what Nebraska's plans are....Nebraska isnt being forced out anywhere.

It was stated before by AZGriz that he didnt know why the 6 schools would wait for a deadline that the thought they were gonzo...

Well the reason Texas and the others would be more inclined to stay with the Big XII is the road to the BCS is more atainable in the current Big XII then it would be in a Pac 16. And while Nebraska controls the fate of the Big XII in a way so does Texas because the other 5 teams wont leave unless Texas does.

If Nebraska were to stay it could still be possible to see Colorado leave for the Pac 10, in fact that maybe the only way they get there and the Pac 10 could add another school as well to get to 12 and establish lucrative title game, they could add Colorado State as a localized opponent for Colorado and the Big XII could add someone like Boise State to replace Colorado, but as long as the major schools remain in the Big XII then it will survive.

As I said, I read that Nebraska could be the odd school out. I should have stated also that they could have been the odd school out of an invite to the Pac-10 or the Big Ten (as unlikely as that might be, it is POSSIBLE  ). But I read that before this latest development, so it's a moot point now.

True enough, Nebraska being invited to the Big Ten was not ever and still is not a guarantee. If they expand more then just one team Nebraska is likely to be part of it, but if they add just 1 team, its likely to be someone near Penn State or Notre Dame, though the Big XII deadline of Friday sure could speed up the Big Tens schedule if they want Nebraska because they would need to say yes to them by Friday or lose them. I dont recall ever hearing anything about Nebraska going anywhere but the Big Ten... I dont think they have been part of the Pac 10 talks at all. They will have to guarantee the Big XII by Friday if they will stay or not, they cant afford to play a game and hope the Big Ten invites them later... there would be no other landing spot for them and they surely wont want to be part of a weaker Big XII.

As I posted earlier the Pac 10 plans to invite teams this week... I think we will know most of any possible realignment by the weekend as the Pac 10 and Big XII have forced the Big Tens hand.

I will also add that ideally the Big Ten wants to add 1 team (Notre Dame) but Notre Dame has no apparent interest in joining if its just a 1 team expansion but could be gotten in a multi team expansion. If Notre Dame leans towards joining and if they are interested in joining could Notre Dame push for Army and Navy joining as well?

By joining Notre Dame would be locked in for 8 or 9 games each season and by continuing their Army and Navy series' it would leave little space for other marquee games to schedule, which one would think is not what Notre Dame wants, however if Army and Navy also were to be invited and join, then they can continue those games as part of its conference schedule... this would also get some teams closer to Penn State.

I don't understand why everyone's all over ND's jock for the Big Ten. That ship sailed over ten years ago. One VERY influential Big Ten coach has been very vocal about his opposition to ND precisely because they've already turned it down. I HIGHLY doubt ND get's another Big Ten invite, which they'll just refuse anyway.
