Big South QBs

Post by bjtheflamesfan »

Just thought Id take a minute and look at the QBs in the Big South as we are about a month and a half before we dive into final preparation for the 2010 football season.

Charleston Southern
AJ Toscano- 179/308 2092 Yds 12 TDs 12 INTs
Andrew Trudnowski 19/38 143 Yds 0 TDs 1 INTs

Coastal Carolina
Zack MacDowall- 126/229 1664 Yds 9 TD 11 INT
Jamie Childers- 27/53 289 Yds 3 TD 6 INT

Gardner-Webb
Keenan Grissett No 2009 Stats
John Rock 8/12 133 Yds 2 TD 0 INT

Liberty
Mike Brown 48/68 427 Yds 4 TD 0 INT
Tyler Brennan 9/15 101 Yds 0 TD 0 INT

Presbyterian
Brandon Miley 151/276 1736 Yds 11 TD 16 INT
Myron Gary 1/1 27 Yds 1 TD 0 INT

Stony Brook
MIchael Coulter 153/279 2060 Yds 15 TDs 10 INT
Dayne Hoffman 3/6 59 Yds 1 TD 1 INT

VMI
Adam Morgan No 2009 Stats
Cameron Jones 4/11 30 Yds 1 TD 0 INT

Youve got two teams who do not have at least 1 QB who saw significant game action at QB (G-W and VMI) and four who have only one (Stony Brook, Liberty, Presbyterian, Charleston Southern). VMI, Liberty and Gardner-Webb do not have the QB who started at the beginning of 2009. If I had to list top to bottom Id go:

1. SBU
2. CSU
3. LU
4. CCU
5. PC
6. G-W
7. VMI

And since I know kd will be on me like an ill fitting hat when he sees this, I have the Bulldogs and the Keydets down at the bottom because both teams are pretty much breaking in new QBs this year.

This is an interesting thread. Never quite looked at these numbers in this manner.

BJ, you said in another thread that Mike Brown could be one of the best QBs in the nation and a Payton Award contestant but he's the third best QB in the Big South? Just trying to follow your reasoning.

I did Jon...one thing that went into ranking the QBs as I did was looking at the numbers from last year. Just going by the numbers, Mike Brown is the third best in the conference. He is going into his first full season as THE GUY at QB. If he has a full season of games like he did against Lafayette, he will probably finish as the best QB in the Big South and very likely one of if not the best in the nation. Just looking at the numbers from last year, he hasnt had a chance to show a ton of what he can do at QB while the two starters I have ahead of LU (Coulter at SBU and Toscano at CSU) both had complete years to work from at the QB position and showed themselves pretty fairly. Mike did the lion's share of his offensive damage as a WR last year, not as a QB. As I said a few sentences ago, if he has games all year like he did in his one start at QB, he is gonna be a great one

Good assesment. From a PC perspective, Miley is a good QB with a dual threat capability but seems to be indecisive at times. Hopefully continuity among the coaching staff and offensive system has done him some good this offseason and he will be an improved QB for 2010. A more run oriented offense will also help take some burden off him.

No yelling from me, BJ. Adam Morgan was redshirted, Cam Jones got into about 5-6 games (Maypray and Hughes took about 90% of the snaps in 2009), had a fine game vs. Army. He and Morgan are 1 and 1a going into August camp.
1-AA is tops!!

If memory serves me correctly, Dayne Hoffman was starter in 2008, before Coulter transferred in.

Regardless, quite pleased by the ranking :)

Redwyn, you would be correct (course LU beat you guys 33-0 that year...take that for what its worth). I think that if Coulter has a year like last year and Mike Brown has a year like Ive mentioned in previous posts, you could be looking at a real interesting battle in Lynchburg in November

Just throwing out another name at GWU, Chandler Browning RFR-QB who hasn't yet seen action but IMO will push John Rock hard for the top QB spot before and during the season. Browning is big kid at 6-3, 225 who can make all the throws but will still have to prove himself on the field in game situations. I can envision a bit of QB platoon at GWU this season. Browning received interest from the likes of Maryland and his dad is a former starting QB at Duke. Regardless, GWU goes into the 2010 campaign with an unproven QB. Statistically, that usually spells a bit of trouble but there have been more than a few nice suprises with unproven QB's grabbing the opportunity and playing well.

Dont overlook our running game. Gowins is back as a junior and we picked up two pretty quick backs from Hofstra- Cutino type runners.

Certainly GWU has to be concerned due to having to break in a new QB. However, we had one of the most consistent QBs in the conference [and the country] last year and that didn't take us very far. I agree with EagleDawg that we have an interesting competition at QB for the upcoming season. Whoever our QB is this year, the conference Ds are going to have to spread out more than they did last year. There is the potential for more mistakes this year, but, there is also the potential for more reward.

I certainly wont 97...I'll probably go over the running backs next...as a sidenote...with three guys (especially two of a similar style) do you think you might have trouble doling the carries out?

I think we'll certainly take another look at these come preseason camp because anything can and does happen once they strap the pads back on in July and August.

Agreed. Also, the ability of our QB now, whoever it may be, to throw the ball further than 25 yards down the field will be a welcome sight.
