BCS Conference Changes and the FCS

Post by dbackjon »

How possible BCS conference realignment might affect the top tier of NCAA championship football

The offseason for Division I college football fans usually is a long, arduous wait between spring practice and summer practice. This year, because of the actions of a few commissioners belonging to rich conferences, this offseason for fans of FCS schools has been anything but boring.

In January, Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany announced that league officials would undergo a study to consider expanding the conference from its current 11-member membership. Since the former OVC commissioner made that announcement, sportswriters and bloggers have been speculating themselves silly as to the number of possible expansion candidates (one, three or five?), and targeted athletic programs (Notre Dame? Rutgers? Missouri? Nebraska? Texas?).

WHAT? I haven't heard anything about this. I wonder if Montana might think of moving up now. :)

Why do you guy keep tryin to connect FCS to FBS? The only way fbs and fcs are connected is an easy W for the home fans to start the year off right. No more, no less.

That is about the dumbest thing I've ever read on this site. Of course the two are connected. The implications of conference realignment are huge for everyone in Div 1 (that would be FBS and FCS). If you cannot see this for yourself, then no amount of explaining by anyone else is gonna help you. But I suggest you take a look, at your leisure, at any of the many threads on conference realignment and you'll see how FCS might be impacted.

Herky, your link doesn't work. Well, the link does but the story has been pulled. I'm hoping Clemson will get an invite to the SEC.

The Gamecocks can't stop it by themselves. I believe they only need 9 "yes" votes to add another team.

What could happen though is Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida colluding to keep out Clemson, Florida State/Miami, and Georgia Tech.

I hope the SEC adds Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Florida State, and Clemson

With realignment of the big FBS conferences there will be room for expansion in some of the other conferences. The Big East is one such conference. It is not out of the question that Villanova (FCS) might move up and join the Big East in football. (They are already a member of the Big East). UConn did this several years ago, and has had success. That is one example of the repercussions. There are others.

Stepping on everyone in the process for money will backfire for these greedy conferences. They've completely gone crazy and lost track of the whole point of college athletics...the student athletes. They're not thinking about the extra travel times for kids, the less classroom times, and the rest of the negatives involving super conferences. I don't know how or when, but I truly believe karma's gonna have a funny way of biting these guys a$$es if this whole thing goes down. You can't further seperate the haves and have-nots without something bad happening. Even the haves NEED the have-nots.

No need to respond to BlackFalker........he's in la-la land.

How is Villanova going to become a member of Big East Football when there is no Big East Football left once Rutgers, Pitt & Syracuse (Big Ten) and UConn, West Virginia, and Louisville (ACC) leave???

Agreed - the Big East ends up being something on the order of the MAC if the rumors of potential superconference realignment become true.

Nobody in FCS is a player to be a part in the mega-conferences. When schools like Kansas are going to be left on the outside, we don't matter. It'll happen soon, but the "Friday deadline" the Big XII has given NU & MU will come & go with nothing happening.

I tend to agree. Just like the USC penalties announcement that was suppose to come out last week.

Deadline is actually Monday and it looks like Nebraska is going to the Big 10 and Missouri is screwed. But... that could change.

If that's the way it happens... it's fairly likely that the Big XII just picks up Utah... and all is well in the world of college athletics.

Thing is, the Big 10 will probably add more than just Nebraska. The only school that could've been a single Big 10 entrant was Notre Dame and that seems unlikely now.

Yeah......no way that they stop with Nebraska (who bring very little to the table as far as market size goes). If Nebraska is #12 then the Big Ten is inviting at least 2 more.....and most likely 4 more.

Just Nebraska gives them a championship game... which they were desperately in need of. It's been known they wanted a championship game for a long time... the idea of "superconferences" has only recently been entering into the rumor mill. Who knows if that's their real aim or how important it is to them. After adding the twelfth team... they'd start seeing diminishing returns with every school added after that. The teams added after 12 would have to be HUGE moneywise... like Texas or Notre Dame. Adding Pitt or Rutgers probably wouldn't be worth it, imo.

I'm not saying it won't happen. But, there hasn't been a lot that concretely shows they're seeking to expand to 14 or 16. Just seems like rumors gone out of control.

Big 12 is going to be done.
With Neb and Mizzou bailing to the big 10.Tex,Tex A&M and Tex Tech going to the pac 10(Tex gov& Tex staff confirmed this evening per espn). It looks like the Mtn West and the Wac are poised also to add some of the casulaties.
I didnt hear much talk about bringing teams up,but it has to be in the mix.
