Re: BCS Conference Changes and the FCS
The worst scenario possible will be if the four super conferences form a division of their own. FBS will become I-AA and FCS will become I-AAA. The TV rights will get caught up in the BCS conferences and exposure for others will become even less.
I see nothing positive coming from this unless you are a BCS fan.

Then the Big Ten becomes the Big 16.mainejeff wrote:Yeah......no way that they stop with Nebraska (who bring very little to the table as far as market size goes). If Nebraska is #12 then the Big Ten is inviting at least 2 more.....and most likely 4 more.GannonFan wrote:

Latest rumor is that Notre Dame, Maryland, Rutgers and Syracuse are Big Ten bound.
If that one is true then it will be an absolute STUNNER! It also leaves the ACC reeling because the SEC is probably coming after FSU, Miami, Clemson and GA Tech.

I guess that means that the current unofficial I-AAA becomes I-AAAA (or would that be I-B)?
BTW, ND is NOT going to the Big Ten.

Re: BCS Conference Changes and the FCS
I don't see Notre Dame ever joining any conference. They'd have to share the spotlight and that's not happening in our lifetime. Being the most recognizable program in all of college football and being an independent, they can travel to any part of the country on any given Saturday and play in a sold out NFL venue. This keeps their nationwide fan base happy and means more revenue for them. I'm not saying that they might not benefit from being in a conference but what incentive do they really have to change at this point?

And are we talking football only realignment? I can't possibly see Maryland leaving the ACC in basketball. If this happens, all hell will break loose.

But money talks. I read/heard somewhere that Indiana is making more money per game via the BTN than ND does with NBC. INDIANA! Football even, not basketball! At some point ND has to swallow their pride and realize that they AREN'T the football program they once used to be, and they won't ever be that program again as an independent, so they are going to have to join a conference sooner or later.COBBLESTONE wrote:I don't see Notre Dame ever joining any conference. I heard that on the radio a couple weeks ago too. And by more it was in the tens of millions more. And that is EVERY team in the Big10 make more than ND. If you add in the DC/Baltimore/NY tv markets, that number increases by a lot. If Maryland takes the bait, I can't see how ND rationalizes staying indepentant.bandl wrote:But money talks. I used Indiana as the example because ND is also in Indiana. Thank god for that too, can you imagine if ND was located in Iowa? We'd have the Iowa Conference of University of Iowa, the Iowa State Cyclones (yes!), Northern Iowa College and ND. Holy crap.andy7171 wrote:I heard that on the radio a couple weeks ago too. Re: BCS Conference Changes and the FCS
Fixed it for you. Notre Dame's BCS contract only has a few more years on it and they have not been very successful. With the money that the Big 10 can provide them it may be in there best interest to make the move while the door is open. Once realignment is done there may not be an opening, even or ND, and if Kelly does not turn them around they may not be as big of a draw as in the past....COBBLESTONE wrote:Truer words have never been spoken! If they get Maryland, Syracuse, and Rutgers on board then it is the perfect time for Notre Dame to make the move and earn an extra $10 million per year in the process!

Re: BCS Conference Changes and the FCS
It's funny, people still talk about Notre Dame not being the program they used to be, yet here we are, discussion what Notre Dame will do. They still make plenty of money and even outside of the Big Ten they don't make much less. And Notre Dame has been mostly image for the past 40 years or so - they've not been a consistent powerhouse team for a long time, well before the Holtz era. They have periods where they are good, and periods where they stink. And every now and then they win a national title. I'm not sure how much has really changed - they've been like this for decades. And people still watch them and still talk about them just as much as they do today.bandl wrote:But money talks. IMO, the only real way that they feel forced to join a conference is if they feel like they will be dwarfed in terms of the money (and so far they aren't) or that they will have no access to either games (unlikely) or the national title (perhaps). If that happens, they'll join up. If not, I could see them being independent for some time.

Re: BCS Conference Changes and the FCS
I would think that SEC is more likely to look at VT so they can expand in the VA market and maybe pursue an NC school rather than just add more schools from their current area. Although It'd be interesting to see Clemson and FSU both go to the SEC as they both have huge rivalry games that are currently OOC with USC and UF.andy7171 wrote:Maryland??? WTF? If Maryland is willing to leave the ACC in basketball then we're likely to see a brand new Big East as the ACC raids the best of those left to fill the holes from the SEC and Big 10 grabs. Rumor is that the Big 12 leftovers are likely to head to the Big East so there may be a huge shift in the complexion of BE.

I think after SCOTUS ruled against the NFL's immunity to antitrust laws unanimously, the superconferences thing won't happen. I think 14 is the absolute biggest any of the conferences get after everything is done.
The Big 12 will survive, but may probably lose its championship game. If worst comes to worst they can always get Utah, TCU, Colorado State, and a few other schools.

Heard a theory the Big Ten (by taking Rutgers, Syracuse and Pitt) will effectively destroy the Big East (in terms of a revenue producing entity) and elinimate any home for ND's other sports, thus forcing ND to join the conference. Makes sense. Huge money to be had with Rutgers and ND on board. It appears the Big Ten is playing hard ball at the highest level. If the Big 10 does end up taking Rutgers Syracuse and Pitt that would be a blow to the Big East yes but i dont think that it would eliminate the conference. You have teams such as Army and Navy who would both be good fits for the conference and at the same time enable one or more FCS teams that want to move up into the conferenceAppMan wrote:Heard a theory the Big Ten (by taking Rutgers, Syracuse and Pitt) will effectively destroy the Big East (in terms of a revenue producing entity) and elinimate any home for ND's other sports, thus forcing ND to join the conference. I've never thought of Army or Navy as being good fits for the Big East. Yes their excellent schools with tremendous history but they're very different from current Big East schools. What is the opinion of the ECB types here? Would Army & Navy be attractive to a Big East that had been raided by the Big 10 and/or ACC? Or would they look at Conference USA, Big 12 and select FCS schools first?SUUTbird wrote:If the Big 10 does end up taking Rutgers Syracuse and Pitt that would be a blow to the Big East yes but i dont think that it would eliminate the conference. I agree. Army's brief time in the CUSA came to an end partly because they didn't think the conference as a whole fit their academic profile.
