Official announcement will be made Friday.

That has to mean they are going to 14 or 16 and we will see big shakeups.

I wouldn't doubt that - if they were only adding ND to get to 12, that would be limited. Doing this sounds like bigger ramifications.dgreco wrote:That has to mean they are going to 14 or 16 and we will see big shakeups.

Re: BREAKING: Nebraska Is Going To Big Ten
Why would they necessarily want bigger ramifications? A championship game is what they want. Unless they get ND or UT... expanding past 12 spreads the money thin between the schools and doesn't bring in a wad with a big school.GannonFan wrote:I wouldn't doubt that - if they were only adding ND to get to 12, that would be limited. Re: BREAKING: Nebraska Is Going To Big Ten
Unless they're banking on Syracuse and Rutgers (assuming the rumors of them being invited are true) delivering the NYC market. That would be a huge revenue boost for the Big Ten Network. A championship game and the biggest market in the country may be too enticing for Delaney to pass up, with Notre Dame or without (most likely without).Skjellyfetti wrote:Why would they necessarily want bigger ramifications? Seems to me that if the Big 10 adds Nebraska they get a championship game. 15 million dollars in so of revenue every year. That would be divided amongst the other schools along with revenue from the Big 10 network. Any further expansion spreads that money around further. Not to mention the fact that a conference can send a max of 2 schools to BCS games... so that money is also spread even more thin.

Re: BREAKING: Nebraska Is Going To Big Ten
The Big Ten expansion is not driven by a desire for a championship game. Delaney has even said that one expansion takes place, the Big Ten might not have a championship game. Expansion is driven by expected revenue that will come from contracts with cable and satellite companies. That is why Syracuse is not a candidate but Nebraska is. Despite Nebraska's small population, its football program has a national following and their games cause tv sets to be turned on.

Ah, ok. I thought you were saying the diminishing returns was wrong in regards to expanding past 12.CitadelGrad wrote:The Big Ten expansion is not driven by a desire for a championship game. I didn't word what I said very well in regards to the championship. Of course revenue is their main pursuit. But, a championship game is their easiest and most obvious way to increase revenue. I should have said the championship was their main pursuit to increase revenue or something.
Delaney may say that they may not have a championship game... but, they will. It's EASY money in the bank. If he says that the championship game is their reason for expansion... then the move looks reactionary... considering the Big 10 is 18 years late to the boat on that.

And the revenue of the Big Ten network will be diluted if they expand past 12 and don't bring in a big name (Texas or ND). If they can bring in one of those... they expand past 12. If they can't, they don't imo.

Is the Big Ten network available on cable networks around the country or is it local. Would you add several million subscriptions to the BTN by adding say Nebraska and Missouri?Skjellyfetti wrote:And the revenue of the Big Ten network will be diluted if they expand past 12 and don't bring in a big name (Texas or ND). Re: BREAKING: Nebraska Is Going To Big Ten
Yeah, but it would be diluted between more teams... so the schools overall (because the Big 10 divides the money equally) would lose money. There would be a slightly larger pot... but more hands reaching for money.Gil Dobie wrote:Is the Big Ten network available on cable networks around the country or is it local. And the money from BCS games? Only 2 teams allowed in BCS per conference... so the same amount of money is divided between 13 schools instead of 11.
Texas and ND can without a doubt offset the dilution of BCS and BTN money so it would be a net positive. Maybe some other schools can, but I dunno.

It depends. I have DirecTV and I get it, but if I had Dish Network you have to get a SportsPack to get it, otherwise it's just local. Cable, I have no idea.Gil Dobie wrote:Is the Big Ten network available on cable networks around the country or is it local. Honestly, one of the big reasons I have not switched to Dish is because I couldn't get the Big Ten Network. I used to live in Michigan and I love watching Big Ten sports, even football where it's the Slow Ten (eleven).

In Rhode Island on Cox it is not available, but in Massachusetts I have seen it available on Verizon and Comcast. Three examples are all on standard packages.ASUMountaineer wrote:It depends. I like Nebraska in the Big 10 - just seems to fit better than the Big 12, especially since the Big 12 split up the only real rivalry Nebraska had there anyway in the Nebraska/Oklahoma pairing. Since they play so rarely anymore it just seemed like an odd place for Nebraska to be. I look forward to Nebraska matchups with Mich and Penn St and Ohio St and Mich St in the future - heck, Nebraska/Iowa could turn into a real nice rivalry.

Just another monster stadium and fanbase to add to the Big 11, er 12, or whatever it will be!

Re: BREAKING: Nebraska Is Going To Big Ten
The Big 12 really did kill the Nebraska / Oklahoma rivalry, and the big game on Friday after Thanksgiving. They changed it to Colorado, whoopie. The possiblie Iowa rivalry and the new Original Big Red vs the Big Red Cheeseheads could be big also. The last time I was at a Nebraska / Minnesota game though it was 49-0 Huskers. Having lived in Nebraska and being a Husker fan, it will be great to be able to follow the Huskers closer again.GannonFan wrote:I like Nebraska in the Big 10 - just seems to fit better than the Big 12, especially since the Big 12 split up the only real rivalry Nebraska had there anyway in the Nebraska/Oklahoma pairing. Doesn't seem that long ago that the Nebraska - Oklahoma game was one of the "must watch" games of the year. Oklahoma seems to have dropped Nebraska as their top rival and replaced them with Texas.GannonFan wrote:I like Nebraska in the Big 10 - just seems to fit better than the Big 12, especially since the Big 12 split up the only real rivalry Nebraska had there anyway in the Nebraska/Oklahoma pairing.
