Chicken Little and Doom and Gloom aren't quite accurate - but - I understand those responses

But you gotta ask yourself at least a few questions
1) Do you believe that the stock market is mysterious and "nobody knows" whats going to happen next

Regardless of the answer to that question

2) Do you believe that the present administration meddling with, overseeing / demands for transparency / restrictions / fines and general bungling with the market forces will have a positive effect on the system..?

Just wondering...

You should tell your investment manager what you have come to believe might be possibly happening over the next 6 months and that lower yield / stable cash is what you want until after the elections - say Q1 2011

and that you don't want you life savings exposed to the whim of the street for the next two quarters

That might be what I would do...

I can make the changes online, if need be. is that dreyfus the stable cash/lower yield option is all I was asking.

Holy crap, I just noticed a percentage of my plan is in Columbia Acorn, am I partially to blame for the economy?? :ohno:

Two answers:

Yes you are partially to blame

Nope, I think the Dreyfus is a mutual fund

Okay, I was not trying to create panic

Relax... exhale... I am not a money manager

1) Call your money manager at your company or through your HR department
2) and make an appointment with them individually and just tell them what you are thinking...

of course they are paid to tell you that you're nuts or that's not how the market works and that it's all way over your head and vastly more mysterious than a human can ever come to understand... etc.

3) but you can move you money into CD's - and usually as much as you like

and relax

Here's a good question:

Taking into account the mood of the country right now, much less if the market crashes 2,000-4,000 points off where it is now, what are the odds that this time the banks are NOT "too big to fail"?? Unless it would cause irreversible catastrophic damage, I'd bet you'd see said banks disappear.

Look at a broad market bond index fund like Barclays Capital U.S. Aggregate Bond Index...

I use it to counter my stock investments...generally, as one goes up, the other goes down...

Never the same...I'm usually ahead when all is said and done...but with the volatility of the past few weeks, I've gotten more into the bond index funds and less into stocks...

I'm not a money manager, and I don't play one on TV (and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night)...but I do track my investments daily... :twocents:

I use broad market taxable bond index fundss to balance my tax-deferred accounts (401k, IRAs). I use the muni bonds to balance my taxable portfolios. No sense in using tax free bonds in a tax-deferred account.

I can't do anything without the tax cost firmly in mind. :D

At what point should I start investing in BP? When they start raising their gas prices again?

My set ain't nearly big enough for that  And my wife would then take that set and stomp on it, leaving me with no set at all.

My wife is currently stomping on my set from my prior two years of investing in BP during which time I can be quoted as saying to her "BP is the most conservative oil company in the world."

OK, cool. That's the Government F Fund. I'm thinking about going to 50% F, 50% G (Government securities) for a few months.

This forum can be a beautiful thing...
This is exactly the kind of information "WE ALL" need to make educated decisions

The individual who passed this information along to me has shared several bits of information similarly in the past and been correct every single time

The next six months should be interesting to watch

Thanks for sharing. :thumb: I think it will take longer than six months for things to shake out, though.

Reading anything interesting? I just finished "Lords of Finance" and have started "Crisis Economics."

The stock market is for suckers.

We put what we had in the market into capital improvements and durable goods purchases for the property. As money comes we'll put it into things like a grid-tie system and a deep well. New tractor that can run on homemade bio-diesel......ten years and we'll off the grid entirely.

You folks are missing the big pic, it's time to be dropping out of the system, not reinvesting in the same rigged game. :ohno:
