I think he COULD of been a successful leader had he surrounded himself with better people. He took too many of his friends and buddies from the good 'ole boy network to DC with him. If he had surrounded himself with people that actually knew something instead of just friends he might of had a chance.
He declared in a speech that we would never use more foreign oil than we did in 1977. He also set up a solar electricity bank. Imagine where we'd be if Reagan and the presidents thereafter had followed through on those committments.
Too bad nobody listened.

Re: Worrisome Tie to Carter for Obama
Carter was a brilliant guy dealt a hand of cards he couldn't handle. He's done some of his best work post office. BO is relying on rhetoric to transform into action, and it isn't working. I'm thinking he'll have a hard time repeating in '12, and I have no idea if there's a better option on the horizon Dem or Rep......

Re: Worrisome Tie to Carter for Obama
Very well put. I remember the night of the '08 election and feeling like the better candidate won, but for whatever reason only being guardedly optimistic. But I had certain friends and family members who normally are as cynical as I am rejoicing like it was the second coming. I thought to myself the guy hasn't done anything yet but campaign.ASUG8 wrote:Carter was a brilliant guy dealt a hand of cards he couldn't handle. He's done some of his best work post office. I don't know if the health insurance companies, Goldman Sach's, and big oil can spend enough to overcome his inaction on key issues and bad publicity on others.

Maybe Obama can channel the ghosts of Walter Lippman and Edward Bernays.kalm wrote:ASUG8 wrote: I don't know if the health insurance companies, Goldman Sach's, and big oil can spend enough to overcome his inaction on key issues and bad publicity on others.

I love how threads on this topic keep popping up. This topic is like the Area 51 of forumdom.
I'll say it again like I have said it a hundred times:
There is no way in hell that anyone other than BHO gets the Dem nomination for President in the next cycle. NO WAY. CANNOT HAPPEN. WILL NOT HAPPEN.
It would be the death of the Democratc Party as we know it in America, and even Democrats aren't THAT fvcking stupid.
Any speculation on a Hillary ticket in 2012 is wasting time and energy. Better to speculate on whether we will colonize Mars in the next 50 years. That's more possible.

I agree with you that Obama will be the nominee in 2012, Cid, but I think you are discounting the potential for a panicky, divided Democratic Party being splintered and indisciplined, resulting in a divided, contentious convention, a la 1968, and a doubly wounded Obama as candidate.
If another two or three major disasters occur on Obama's watch, like a another successful terrorist attack coupled with another recession triggered by the programmed 2011 tax increases, weighed down by continued unemployment, coupled perhaps with a failed rescue of the Greek or Spanish economies, could you not see the possibility of Obama pulling an LBJ?
