Two things:

1. Could it have been anyone else but Donovan scoring that goal? The all time international US goal leader, sending the US to its first unbeaten group stage since 1950.

2. With now two terrible calls leading to disallowed goals, does anyone else think maybe there is a conspiracy against the US? Probably not realistic, but makes one wonder...

The ref crew today was Belgian, so I doubt it was a conspiracy, just a blown call.

I'm much more inclined to think that the disallowed goal against Slovenia resulted from an anti-US bias, we see it all the time with refs from third world CONCACAF countries. Poor person grows up disliking the US and has one chance to screw us in something that means more to his country than anything else. Not an organized conspiracy, but just dislike.

So if history is any indication, this should be the beginning of a semifinals run:

1990: Didn't make it out of group
1994: Lost in the Round of 16
1998: Didn't make it out of group
2002: Lost in quarterfinals
2006: Didn't make it out of group
2010: ?

Man, all the respect in the world to Donovan - he came into this World Cup with huge expectations, had a bad first half against England, and since then has just been amazing. He's involved in every big play the US has, he's looked dangerous on the ball, and now he steps up and gets the huge goal to keep the tournament going. Big time props to Donovan - one helluva player.

Damn and hell yeah!

I had to leave at 87 minutes to go pick up my boys from half day summer camp. It was nice to read the headlines when I got home. :thumb: Now I'll go watch the ending on DVR, though it surely won't be quite as exciting.

Now c'mon Ghana and eliminate the Nazis!

schedule could favor it. If Germany beats Ghana today US gets Ghana next. Then its the winner of Uruguay and South Korea.

And of course as was pointed out after your post that I saw after my response. if Ghana wins today it makes it even easier for US as they face either Serbia or Australia next.

Let's not put the cart before the horse. Ghana is taking group D.

and snobbery like that is why soccer will always be an after thought in the US.

BTW - attended my first World Cup game 16 years ago. I really would like soccer to succeed, but as long as FIFA is unaccountable for screw ups, it is a very hard sell.

Australia is easily the best possible outcome, but they and Ghana need to both win. Ghana's next, Germany, and Serbia is the one team I do not want at all. Slovenia is Serbia-lite: tall, athletic, physical, and given our history with Eastern European countries I just don't to see it.

Plus Germany gives a chance at revenge for 02:

and Ghana for 06:
