Repubs defeat jobs bill, rally planned July 2

Post by catamount man »

This is an actual email sans the email address I got off another website.

"Where: Washington DC Mall
When: July 2nd –
Time: You will be notified of an exact time to converge on the mall. Please do not do so before this time.
What to Bring: Tent, water, lawn chair, talents and skills list, notepads, pens, clothes, pillows, deodorant
Why: To put a face on the unemployed and for our very survival.

Without assistance we will lose our homes. Without assistance we will not be able to feed ourselves nor our families. Without assistance we will no longer be able to continue our job search. The time has come to stop begging for help but instead to demand it. It is not our fault we lost our jobs nor is it our fault that we cannot find new ones.

It is time to unite as one and put a face on the unemployed. It is time to unite as one and show our leaders that we will not just die off quietly and alone. If we are to die, we will die together for the world to see."

I thought the Dems were headed for a tough day in November. Now, eh..........................don't know. While I personally loathe the handout mentality, this bill, IMO, was NOT a handout. It's amazing how many southern republicans voted against this yet will walk in their churches on Sunday, Bible under their arm, hands raised in the air yelling "HELP US TO BE MORE LIKE YOU O LORD!"

YEAH................................ :coffee:

So, how are all these poor unemployed people gonna get to D.C.???

Most hotels are pretty much booked for the holiday weekend...where are they gonna stay???

Are we gonna see another shanty town ala the Bonus marches of the 1930's

Complete edit... wrong bill. This is referring to the senate bill that extended benefits, not the one in the house currently where the first time homebuyer tax credit is attached.

I'm glad I saw your original post before you edited it, BB.

I think you were saying something about how your business would be better if the government would just butt out, right?

Republicans crow and crow about national debt yet don't hesitate to vote for and include pork spending projects in their home districts or states, don't block other huge bills that can stop it from growing astronomically and yet vote to weaken the states further financially AND block something to actually HELP THE PEOPLE. They suck while the Democrats blow and neither one swallows.

a quick search, and maybe I missed it, but this isn't on fox news website or cnn's website. Does Congress think this isn't big news or something? :ohno:

Congress can't keep extending unemployment forever! Many of these people have already been on umemployment close to 2 years, and aren't even bothering to look for jobs, or refuse to take jobs that after taxes won't pay them much more or any more than untaxed unemployment. Not that I blame them, heck, I'd probably do it too. And unless you've been in the labor force for about half a century, the unemployment taxes you & you're employer have paid aren't going to cover 2+ years of unemployment bennies.

Not really... it was a massive swat at banks and mortgage servicers for holding up REO contracts and short sales and holding thousands of potential buyers- as well as the entire housing sector- hostage.

The first time home buyer tax credit has largely- at least here in Central FL- done what it was supposed to do, which is to stimulate the housing market, slow down the depreciation of home values, and to speed the absorbing of distressed properties back into the market place.

There's only one problem though... the major banks and servicing companies can't get their heads out of their asses long enough to push the short sale approvals and REO contracts through. For the last three months the Orlando Regional Realtor Association and Mid Florida Multiple Listing Service has reported all time records for pending contracts while at the same time reporting near all time record lows for closings. Why???? The banks sitting on the short sale approvals and REO contracts have MOL dammed the entire process.

If you saw my personal pipeline of loan applicants you would fall out of your chair. I average over 30 loans in my pipeline at any given time since this time last year but struggle to close 5-8/month. I should be closing about half my pipeline every month and the ONLY thing hindering that is the short sale and REO contract approval process.

Spokane must be really insulated from the recession because (and I realize this is somewhat anecdotal) I don't know a single person who has lost their job or their house, businesses are still hiring, and construction is going on everywhere I look.

The problem I have with unemployment is that it's unproductive. As long as we're paying them these people should be involved with public works projects like planting trees, erecting wind farms and solar panels, picking up garbage, or building that big fence around the border so many of you desire. :thumb:

I'm also concerned this might become a long term contraction and many of these jobs they are waiting on may never return. So investing in a little jobs training and retraining might also pay off in the end.

It would be cool if there were "works Programs" associated with being unemployed...
If there are I'm not familiar with them

But it seems like we've got about 15% (real) unemployment - what better way to get some Federal work done than to put to work the people who are on unemployment..?

to me it has always sent a bad message when we spend millions on weapons of mass destruction, yet won't even throw our most vulnerable the proverbial bone. You might as well call me a pro-life Democrat because I am feeling it today..........and yes, I'm drinking. But it is STUPID to spend millions on worthless wars, wars that cost young Americans their potential and their very lives all for some stupid ideal, yet to close the wallet when it comes to jobs and basic needs for our fellow Americans. I would rather know my tax dollars are helping somebody down the street who hasn't eaten in 3 days to having no money than it go to some war that cost a fellow American his life. 2 CENTS! :thumb:

Like Kalm said, as long as it has some strings attached and they have to work for it. Not so they can simply collect their check, check off a box on a form every week that says they are looking for work, and sit at home on the govt's tit month after month after month.

That is beautiful Kalm and it's I know that for a fact because it has been my position for years.

Beautiful. :thumb:

Cataman, using one that is off the rails to justify another need that is off the rails is just silly. It would be great if we could get it under control but justifying robbing from another bank account that is running in the red to supplement the one that you would like to see continue is just wrong.

The Unemployment bank accounts are tapped out all over the country. The money has been used up dude and I would bet that all the money that your employers have contributed on your behalf is long gone. Some things in life really suck and this is one of them. Unemployment was never meant to sustain people's lives indefinitely it is there as a little welfare to help through a relatively short period of time and the well is dry. It sucks, but it's the truth.
