One reason is we have Bard waiting in the wings to take over.

Another thing is Boston fans will stand up and applaud guys who bring titles to Boston and he was a big part of the 2007 Championship. What we wont take is jackass liars like Damon. Atleast Papelbon is open about it. Damon kept saying he would never play for the Yankees and then boom he runs off to New York.

Clemens was another liar. His big thing was saying he would never leave Boston unless it meant moving close to his home in Texas. Since when is Toronto closer to Texas?

Because a lot of the closers today are one pitch acts and if that pitch doesn't work they're in trouble...

Relievers are relievers for a reason, because they aren't cut out to be starters. Take John Smoltz for example. When he came back from elbow surgery and went to the pen he put up three of the greatest years any closer has using three "plus" pitches. Now just think if he had spent his entire career in the pen. Playing on the Braves teams from 1991-2005 if he had been the closer he would have put up over 500 saves and maybe 600, but he was more valuable as a starter- even if he was only the ace of the staff for maybe 3 of those 15 years.

Mitch Williams' arm was shot before the playoffs started. If you have to place blame, blame it on the manager who kept sending him out there even though his fastball was 10 mph slower than normal.

The way the 93 WS ended was a huge disappointment to me, but I never blamed Mitch.

Mitch Williams was never an elite closer and his career is defined by that one game. Mariano Rivera maybe the greatest ever and his career isnt close to being defined simply by that one world series game, that was my point.
