Utley and Polanco to the DL...

:ohno:
It's too early to label it a crushing blow, because the exact extent of Chase Utley's thumb injury is still unknown. But an MRI revealed a sprain that is bad enough to warrant a trip to the disabled list, meaning the Phillies will be without their star second baseman for at least the next 15 days. They'll also spend the bulk of that time without third baseman Placido Polanco, who was placed on the DL today as he continues to recover from a sore elbow that has plagued him on and off throughout the season.

The Phillies recalled Greg Dobbs and Brian Bocock from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

The move means that three of the Phillies' eight Opening Day regulars will be on the disabled list until at least Saturday, when starting catcher Carlos Ruiz is eligible to return from a concussion.

For a team that has already struggled to score runs in stretches, the loss of Utley for 15 days could be a killer.

Utley has only gone on the disabled list once in his career -- back in 2007 when he broke his hand and missed a month after being hit with a pitch by the Nationals' John Lannan.

^

So what now?

Well, Bocock and Dobbs obviously aren't close to the level of the two guys they are replacing. Bocock is hitting .179 with a .239 OBP and .231 SLG at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Dobbs has two hits and seven strikeouts in 17 at-bats since he was optioned to Lehigh Valley last week.

The Phillies now have six players on their roster who have spent time with the Triple-A IronPigs this season: LHP Mike Zagurski, C Dane Sardinha, Bocock, Valdez, Dobbs and RHP Nelson Figueroa.

They also have seven players on the disabled list:

Chase Utley (6/29, sprained thumb)
Placido Polanco (backdated to 6/26, elbow contusion)
Carlos Ruiz (backdated to 6/19, concussion)
Ryan Madson (4/28, broken toe)
J.A. Happ (backdated to 4/16, elbow strain)
Chad Durbin (6/24, strained hamstring)
Antonio Bastardo (backdated to 6/16, elbow inflammation)
Madson is making his second rehab appearance tonight and is hopeful of returning before the All-Star Break, which begins on July 12. Happ is making his fifth rehab appearance tonight, although the Phillies are still taking a wait-and-see approach with the lefty. He could return within the next week, or they could decide he still isn't ready and either give him one more minor league start or stop his rehab assignment.

^

Utley is eligible to return on July 15, which is the first day back from the All-Star Break.

Polanco is eligible to return on July 11, which is the last day of play before the All-Star Break.

Durbin is eligible to return July 9, while Ruiz is eligible to return July 4, which is Sunday.

Every team has injuries, as they say, but damn if the Phillies didn't reach their yearly quota less than half way through the season.

the wheels coming off in Philly? the loss of Utley is a tough one. Braves put Jason Heyward on DL as well. INTERESTING...

All depends on how long Utley is really out for. On the bright side, if it's just the 15 days, not only does he get the rest, but he also doesn't have to play in the All-Star game either, letting him get even further rest.

On the bright side, the Braves squandered a chance to put some real distance between them and the Phils, and now they have their issues with Hayward- if everyone comes back healthy by the end of the All-Star break, the Phils should still be in good shape. Like I said, though, still depends on Utley's injury not being a longterm thing.

Hand Injuries are particularly bad for power hitters. Perhaps Utley will be helped by playing in Citizens Bank Shoebox, but assuming he's not 100 percent when he comes back he might not be the same player. Plus, he's going in for a hand surgery consultation.. Chase Utley and Hand Surgery are two things you don't want to hear in the same sentence.

Eh, hips are even more important to a power hitter and Utley played all year (2008) with a bum hip he couldn't turn on properly. He still had 33 HR's and more than 100 RBI's that year. I'm not worried about what he does when he's back - he's proven he'll produce, I'd be more worried about how long he's physically out.

And as for the ballpark, didn't Citizens Bank come out as something like just the 10th best hitter's park last year? And it's not like the Phils have crazy splits at home versus away. Fact is, most parks these days are like the one in Philly. And even in big parks, Utley's found places to get HR's - heck, there's even "Utley's Corner" in CitiField where he always hits them.

Lidge. Kill yourself, you sorry piece of excrement.

Why does Charlie not let Contreras come back in the ninth after throwing one fucking pitch in the eighth?

I honestly hope Lidge just gets injured soon. He's pathetic.

Yeah, 2 outs and no one on and he somehow finds a way to give up 3 runs.

Man, Raul has really stepped up his game the past couple of weeks. :thumb:

The Phils really need to hang on here, what with the Braves getting rocked by the Natinals and the Mutts down to their last three outs.

And as I finish the post, Francisco sends another across. :thumb:

Good gut win by the Phils. Hopefully they take 2 out of 3 with Halladay going today.

I'm going to the Clearwater Thresher's (Phillies A affiliate) game this afternoon as part of a work outing. I hope they have the big club on the tube there. :thumb:

BTW, some kid from Venezuela (second baseman, I believe) is working on a 32 game hit streak for Clearwater. Anyone know of any other prospects worth checking out?

Kind of disappointing to see the ace give up 13 hits and a couple of homers in a loss of the rubber match.

I agree, he's gotta get the win today, that's what you expect your ace to do. Giving up a 3 run lead late in the game is not good enough.

He beat the Yankees at NY the other night. He's about 7-3 now.

You Ivy League guys have a hard time recognizing tongue in cheek comments. huh? :D

Edit: I have to say that I was bothered from day 1 that the Phillies did not pick up the option for Cliff Lee in the off season. He was the best bargain in baseball at the time for $9 mil. I still don't get it. :ohno:

Agreed. Trading him was a terrible move and it will really bite the Phils in the ass if Seattle trades him to an NL team.

Pittsburgh will win at least 2 of the upcoming 4-game set. Bank on it. :ohno:

Hopefully the Phils beat the two winless Pirates pitchers they'll be facing in the series.

The Phillies have a history of losing to some pitchers who can't seem to beat anybody else. Examples: the self-hypnotizing Bill Faul of the 60s Cubs; William van Landingham of the Giants; Bill Stoneman of the Expos; etc.

I don't really recognize too many of those guys, since they (other than WvL) pitched...

A-Roid, Utley and Delgado were able to perform with Hip Injuries. Big Papi had hand and wrist problems and he hasn't been the same player since. People always talk about the compact nature of Utley's swing and his wrists play a big part in his ablility to get around quicker so he can drive the ball. You take away the wrists and you have a guy with a short swing who can't turn on the ball.

New timetable on Utley btw, it's now 8 weeks. That's a long long time to be without your best player.
