Why? Seriously. If you are an atheist, why would you believe that is needed? Why does "the betterment of humanity" matter?People need to get their heads out of the clouds and focus on the the betterment of humanity
Why is humanity any more important than a shovel full of sand?
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth

You are:
1) retarded
or
2) making a funny
Humans enjoy living - it's fun... except when we force suffering on others our ourselves...
Regardless of faith or whatever
John,
Have you ever had the top down on a fancy car with a good lookin woman sitting next to you, the wind in your hair a great reservation at a fun place to eat - all the while knowing your getting a 5 star blow job later on in the evening out on the deck over looking the lake
I don't care what you believe in God or Taco Bell life is good my friend - very good...

I would say approximately .0000000001% of the world's population can even dream of having a life that pleasant. Hence, the need to trick oneself into thinking one's life has some sort of greater meaning meted out by a magic man in the sky.Chizzang wrote:JohnStOnge wrote:

Re: More signs of atheist intolerance by Bible thumpers
I wouldn't necessarily say they're 'pathetic'. For most of human history, people have led difficult, short, and miserable lives. I can't blame them for wanting to come up with some sort of explanation for all this suffering; something better to look forward to after it's over. But, if you look at the history of religions, they all serve the same basic purposes: to explain how the world around us came to be, to explain what happens after we die, and to create a system of supposedly divinely ordained morals. So yes, I think humans tend to be guilty of hubris.JoltinJoe wrote:So in reality human beings are mostly pathetic things which have deluded themselves into thinking that they are something more?Grizalltheway wrote:

I'm here to tell you "Life is Good"
And the more stuff we have certainly isn't what makes us happy... in fact sometimes I think it's just the opposite (except the blow job part, that's actually important)
I gave away my flat panel TV the other day... because it hasn't been turned on since the super bowl
When the guy and his wife were leaving my place with the TV they were so excited - I looked at him and said: "Dude.. it won't make you happy" and he stopped and said... "Yeah but thank you anyway"
It won't make you happy...
The only path to true serenity and happiness is:
Complete and total "Surrender"
which is another word for acceptance - the secret to life
you heard it here first buddy... you might want to write that down

Re: More signs of atheist intolerance by Bible thumpers
I've been working on a novel/story which includes a scene with a young intern who runs into the wealthy head of his office in a swanky Manhattan bar. The boss is drunk, but recognizes the intern, and begins a rambling discourse about what makes people happy. He offers to buy the intern a scotch, but the intern demurs, saying he doesn't like scotch. The boss tells him that's because he's only had the cheap shit, not real scotch, and he proceeds to order the best scotch off the top shelf. The intern likes it, and says thank you. The boss responds, "Why do you thank me? Did Eve thank Satan?"Chizzang wrote:I'm here to tell you "Life is Good"

The boss starts complaining about all his possessions, and eventually says he has to go home. Realizing the boss is drunk, the intern says, "Let me call a taxi." The boss becomes angry and says, "Call me a limo. I'm not going home in a fucking ing cab."
Same point, I think. So I did write it down.

No matter what - can you explain why it doesn't matter..?
In the moment right now - the only moment that actually exists - life is to be lived...
the process of living is enjoyable unless you're neurotic or psychologically broken
If somebody proved (somehow) that God didn't exist - it wouldn't change a single enjoyable moment in my life

Re: More signs of atheist intolerance by Bible thumpers
Yeah Jon, in a pure humanist culture, life actually has a much deeper meaning. It all comes down to motivation. If I'm a secular humanist, I want to become a better human and ultimately improve overall society because it's the right thing to do. Not to garner the favor of some invisible big daddy in the sky, who will either reward me or smite me based on my obedience or lack thereof. If the only reason I do "good" is because of some desire to gain plunder in the afterlife, or to avoid punishment in the present, then that is an empty and shallow motivation, resulting in an empty and shallow accomplishment.
Dear lord... please allow this dangerous combination of hair spary, bat slobber, and D.O.T. four automatic transmission fluid to excite my mind, occupy my spirits, and enrage my body, provoking me to kick any man or woman in the back of the head regardless of what he or she has or has not done unto me. All my Best, Earlie Cuyler.

Yesterday I encountered a Mallard Hen and her brood on dry land while on a walk. She hissed at me and stood her ground until the kids were safely back in the pond. I didn't ask her whether she was an atheist, but the safe comfort of the pond seemed to matter a whole bunch to her.

I think Cleets makes some excellent points in this thread. Happiness really is a conscious decision - if you really want to be a happy person, you probably will be. Misery is very easy to find if you are looking for it.
This thread reminded me of a amusing quote from David Lee Roth...
"Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a yacht big enough to pull up right alongside it."

John, usually you are a pretty logical person...but you are way off the chart on this one. Your views on religion blind you so that you only see atheists as selfish people who don't give a hoot about others. Odd that you would think people need some sort of external, final judge and executioner in order to see the value of developing a better society...as if people can't rationally see the benefit of bettering one's world. Your thinking is really limited on this topic.JohnStOnge wrote:Why? Seriously. If you are an atheist, why would you believe that is needed? That song is funny as hell....So from my personal point of view,
Get an ugly girl to marry you.
A pretty woman makes her husband look small
And very often causes his downfall.
As soon as he marries her
Then she starts to do
The things that will break his heart.
But if you make an ugly woman your wife,
You'll be happy for the rest of your life,
An ugly woman cooks her meals on time,
She'll always give you peace of mind.
Don't let your friends say
You have no taste,
Go ahead and marry anyway,
Though her face is ugly,
Her eyes don't match,
Take it from me she's a better catch.
Say man.
Hey baby.
Saw your wife the other day.
Yeah?
Yeah, she's ugly.
Yeah, she's ugly but she sure can cook.
Yeah?. Okay.

It doesn't matter because it is of no importance. The process of living always has the same inevitable ending. You can kid yourself into temporary enjoyment but not if you contemplate the inevitable. Death is your destiny.Or even more importantly...

Also, prior to that inevitable death, there is no reason why someone else shouldn't make your life miserable if they are capable of it. And in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter if they do. If there is a Stalin, that's just the way it is. Stalin gets what he wants. So what if a few 10s of millions are murdered in the process? There is nothing intrinsically wrong with that.
All is just the physical. You're just like a spark flying off a sparkler that flashes for a while then disappears. As soon as you exprience any particular enjoyment it is gone. And in the end you are nothing.

More philosophical bullshit from me -
Happiness is appreciating the beauty around you... the mountains, the plains, even the pollution billowing out of the smoke stacks (for you people in New Jersey
)
Anyway, I was at the beach with the family this evening. The sunset and surf was beautiful to the west, there was a rainbow to the east, the kids were splashing in the waves with kids from another family we had met, my wife looked good, the other wife was hot, and there were at least three quality bikini clad young women who had walked by during the visit.
I gazed over the horizon into the pink, and purple setting sunlight with a toned bikini clad figure wihin my peripheral vision and said outloud, "my gracious Lord, life is good! Thank you."

Clearly you do not value the present moment
Almost nothing is more dangerous than a Christian who doesn't value the present moment except maybe an Islamic nut. When we do not live in the moment John - when we do not respect the now - we make logical the destruction of others for some imagined future reward...
Try just enjoying the now - this moment - It's actually all that exists you know... If we all respected this moment we could all live in a wonderful joyous grace filled world
Existentialism or Atheism (two things you clearly do not understand) do not mean healthy choices and happiness aren't possible and meaningful for all...
