I wouldn't necessarily say they're 'pathetic'. For most of human history, people have led difficult, short, and miserable lives. I can't blame them for wanting to come up with some sort of explanation for all this suffering; something better to look forward to after it's over. But, if you look at the history of religions, they all serve the same basic purposes: to explain how the world around us came to be, to explain what happens after we die, and to create a system of supposedly divinely ordained morals. So yes, I think humans tend to be guilty of hubris.

I've been working on a novel/story which includes a scene with a young intern who runs into the wealthy head of his office in a swanky Manhattan bar. The boss is drunk, but recognizes the intern, and begins a rambling discourse about what makes people happy. He offers to buy the intern a scotch, but the intern demurs, saying he doesn't like scotch. The boss tells him that's because he's only had the cheap shit, not real scotch, and he proceeds to order the best scotch off the top shelf. The intern likes it, and says thank you. Yeah Jon, in a pure humanist culture, life actually has a much deeper meaning. It all comes down to motivation. If I'm a secular humanist, I want to become a better human and ultimately improve overall society because it's the right thing to do. Not to garner the favor of some invisible big daddy in the sky, who will either reward me or smite me based on my obedience or lack thereof. If the only reason I do "good" is because of some desire to gain plunder in the afterlife, or to avoid punishment in the present, then that is an empty and shallow motivation, resulting in an empty and shallow accomplishment.

I think Cleets makes some excellent points in this thread. Happiness really is a conscious decision - if you really want to be a happy person, you probably will be. Misery is very easy to find if you are looking for it.

Your views on religion blind you so that you only see atheists as selfish people who don't give a hoot about others. Odd that you would think people need some sort of external, final judge and executioner in order to see the value of developing a better society...as if people can't rationally see the benefit of bettering one's world. Also,prior to that inevitable death, there is no reason why someone else shouldn't make your life miserable if they are capable of it. And in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter if they do. If there is a Stalin, that's just the way it is. Stalin gets what he wants. So what if a few 10s of millions are murdered in the process? There is nothing intrinsically wrong with that.

All is just the physical. You're just like a spark flying off a sparkler that flashes for a while then disappears. As soon as you exprience any particular enjoyment it is gone. And in the end you are nothing.

Happiness is appreciating the beauty around you... the mountains, the plains, even the pollution billowing out of the smoke stacks (for you people in New Jersey )

Anyway, I was at the beach with the family this evening. The sunset and surf was beautiful to the west, there was a rainbow to the east, the kids were splashing in the waves with kids from another family we had met, my wife looked good, the other wife was hot, and there were at least three quality bikini clad young women who had walked by during the visit.

I gazed over the horizon into the pink, and purple setting sunlight with a toned bikini clad figure wihin my peripheral vision and said outloud, "my gracious Lord, life is good! Thank you."

Almost nothing is more dangerous than a Christian who doesn't value the present moment except maybe an Islamic nut. When we do not live in the moment John - when we do not respect the now - we make logical the destruction of others for some imagined future reward...
