I was taking 5 classes, all 5 had big projects/papers due at the end. Not a big deal there. However, when three of my five professors assign papers over how GWB was the worst president in history and how Obama will be able to lead America to it's greatest point in history (keep in mind this was before Obama was actually elected at the start of the Fall Semester of 2008). One of my poli sci classes was to study how media influences peoples beliefs, which I thought was a duh/great idea. However, we were to only study people like Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh and Fox News and how, as the professor put it, "Evil upper class white men who are for suppression of those who aren't like them are ruining the country". When I asked why we wouldn't also be studying people like Olbermann and the other CNN and MSNBC personalities as well, I was told that there was zero bias in anything they said, and that everything that they spewed was nearly 100% accurate.
I walked out of that classroom that Wednesday morning, walked into my advisors office told him I was leaving the major/college and to fill out my release.

Other than the founding fathers, James Polk should be #1. Promised four things during his campaign:
-Get California/New Mexico
-Get the Oregon Country
-Reduce tariffs
-Create Independent Treasury System (no longer exists)
Did all four and got the F out of the White House with the country in better shape for the next president. Didn't overpromise and simply did what he needed to. THAT should the be model of every president. Set some defined goals that will move the country forward, don't commit to things you can't do, and don't be everything to everyone.

Yeah he was. He was all about "manifest destiny" and embodied the pioneer mentality of the times. Of course a lot of people disagreed with his policy that we should claim all the land to the Pacific Ocean (by force if we had to...like he did with the Mexican-American War), but like it or not, he got everything he promised done and that's respectable.kalm wrote:I think I agree with that sentiment.∞∞∞ wrote:Other than the founding fathers, James Polk should be #1. Historians are historically bad at evaluating the present time in which they live. There's a reason these guys are historians. I wouldn't believe anything these guys say on things that have happened in their lifetimes - their expertise is on things that came before them. Historians in 100 years will be the real arbiters of guys like W and Obama.

I'd agree with that - I mean, they have William Henry Harrison rated all over the place in each of those categories. I mean, I'm sure those were a pretty eventful 32 days he had to warrant those opinions.OL FU wrote:From the look of some of there choices, I suggest that rate Roman Emperors instead of American PresidentsGannonFan wrote:Historians are historically bad at evaluating the present time in which they live. One constitutional amendment would solve the entire entitlement culture with which we are so infected.
Federal election voting rights are for those individuals who actually have a have a net contribution of federal tax revenue and those who have a net withdrawal of tax revenue get to sit on the sidelines. Feds issue a voucher after your federal income tax is submitted verifying eligibility.
States can do whatever they want for local elections.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Sta ... tion,_2008" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; The Illinois senator won 43 percent of white voters, 4 percentage points below Carter’s performance in 1976 and equal to what Bill Clinton won in the three-man race of 1996. Republican John McCain won 55 percent of the white vote.
Fully 96 percent of black voters supported Obama and constituted 13 percent of the electorate, a 2-percentage-point rise in their national turnout. As in past years, black women turned out at a higher rate than black men.
Popular vote: Obama: 69,456,897, McCain: 59,934,814

Obama got 96% of 15.9 million votes....or 15,264,000 votes from African Americans. 636,000 African Americans didn't have their head planted firmly up their asses and voted McCain. A difference of 14,628,000. Obama won by less than 10,000,000 votes.

According to CNN, the 2008 final tally was:
Obama 66,882,230 (53%)
McCain 58,343,671 (46%)
That is a difference of approx. 8.5 million votes, not 10 million.
