People draw unemployment benefits at 26-year high

Post by dbackjon »

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081204/ap_ ... l_meltdown

WASHINGTON – More evidence of consumers' weary state and the nation's deteriorating job market came Thursday with reports that people continuing to draw unemployment benefits climbed to a 26-year high, while retail sales and orders to U.S. factories sank.

The number of newly laid-off people signing up for unemployment benefits last week dropped by 21,000 to 509,000, the Labor Department reported. Even with the drop — which was better than the increase economists were forecasting — the level of jobless applications was still quite high and pointed to a deeply troubled employment climate.

The number of people continuing to draw unemployment benefits last week climbed to 4.09 million, a 26-year high.

AT&T, the Dallas-based telecommunications giant, announced it will slash 12,000 jobs — or about 4 percent of its work force — in response to all the economic troubles. Job reductions will take place this month and into next year.

From my exerpience, a lot of the real jobs on that list will go to internal candidates or are eliminated due to the economy, prior to hiring.

And, lots of companies either require themselves or are required by the government to post externally, at least, even though they may hire internally. Why the government?

Gil,

There are jobs that go awanting that pay 15-18 an hour. You ain't gettin rich, but it's more than unemployment. The problem is, most White Americans think they're "above" those jobs.

Just find your claim a bit suspicious.

Tom,
You can't deliver pizzas while looking the $70G job for which you are qualified, you want and you need to support your family. Put yourself in those shoes. I don't think you'd be an administrative assistant for $40K, and take time away from looking for that $200G bank prez job you should have.

You're being way too simplistic here, bud.

My brother got hired by AT&T at the beginning of the year but quit because he hated the job by the summer. He was worried that he made the wrong choice because it took him until the fall to find a new job but now all the people he was hired with are getting laid off. Looks like he made the right choice.

If I lost my job tomorrow, I give EVERYTHING back except a car, pack whatever I've got left that isn't repossessable, and move back to Montana. I'll live on my $25k and my wife's $25k jobs.. My life would get LOT simpler. :) :) :) :)

Come to think of it....that doesn't sound half bad even if I DON'T lose my job....

There's over 500 people applying for many of these internet and newspaper jobs. A little better odds than winning the lottery. Many resume's are just scanned for keywords.

I understand that, Gil...but the point is that there's lots of people who'd RATHER collect unemployment as their god-given RIGHT than go out and earn an honest days wage for an honest day's work.

Lots of work right now as collectors, repo men, etc.

Man, you're diggin' a big hole with them generalizations, my Grand Canyon State brother. Sure, there's "lots" in numbers, but the percentage is lower, I'd wager. For a Reaganite Conk, you seem to have little faith in your own people.

And, re your above reply about moving back to Montana, that's good for you, but don't extrapolate and project on everyone else. Frankly, I don't think you'd do that, anyway.

See! THAT'S the kind of "out of the box" thinking I'm lookin' for in a roomie! One works at Subway, one works at a liquor store, one works at a pizza place, one works at an adult shop....we're set!
