Georgia State

Post by ODUalum11 »

Has anybody been following the start-up of this program? Even though they are going to be a start-up program they could be very VERY good. They have several BCS transfers (not just 1-A transfers) that include Star Jackson from Alabama and a great coach. They also have, believe or not, many nationally ranked recruits as well.

Other than an obvious loss to Alabama (I wont give GSU that much credit) I could see this team challenging ODU's best record for a start-up program. Who knows if they even have plans to join a conference as rumors are that they could move up to FBS by 2015. It's not as rediculous as I once thought.

Everyone looks good on paper - it's when you get to the field that you find out what you really have.

As for best record for a start-up program, I don't think ODU's mark is in any danger - GSU's schedule is a bit more challenging than what ODU faced last year - just that alone should keep ODU's mark safe.

thats very true but I'd like to believe they might be as good as it seems but like you said once they get on the field we'll see. Also just because they get 1A transfers doesnt mean that they'll be as good as advertised. Jason Fuller was a transfer from UVA to ODU before last season and many thought he'd dominate but it turned out that he wasn't even a starter for us. I know he was a transfer from a pretty bad FBS school but I think thats what many ODU fans thought and wanted to believe. Also I think Georgia States basketball program was getting a lot of hype when they got numerous transfers from BCS schools but it turned out that they really didnt improve.

I think they'll get 7 wins at least, they have many common opponents who ODU beat last year plus 2 D2 opponents (Shorter, Lambuth, Campbell, Savannah State, and NC Central...thats 5 right there.)

There are very few, sure thing FBS transfers who will be stars at the FCS level. Devlin at UD was obviously one, Shawn Johnson who played at UD in '03 was another. But after that it's a roll of the dice. There are boatloads of guys who get a lot of press coming out of high school who do absolutely nothing once they get to college, even if they drop a level or two. Some of the best players at the FCS level recently (AE, Omar Cuff, AP, etc) got few to no stars coming out of high school.

They may get 7 wins, but that won't tell us a thing in terms of how good they are - beating those 7 isn't anything to write home about.

trust me jeff, I had the same reaction when I read that over on their boards...I was just repeating what I read...

And GannonFan I agree, those 7 games really arent that tough. I think we (ODU) will be their first true test of the season before playing Alabama....thats at least their first road test.

Seeing that MJ bolded the half of your sentence that was about us joining a conference; and judging by MJ's comments on CAAZone. I'm thinking that MJ was rolling his eyes at the fact that you didn't know that we are scheduled to join the CAA in 2012, not that we might be going FBS by 2015.

I don't know, I could be wrong though.

I'm extremely proud of my school and the good things they are doing for the school. Star Jackson, two G. Tech offensive lineman (one who was a starter), Samoan linebacker brothers, etc. are only making the team stronger. The coaching staff is stacked too.

Oh I almost forgot about http://web.insidepantherfootball.com/Dev/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

GSU will get its first test of the season in week 3, when we play the perennial top 25 FCS team, Jacksonville St., not to be confused with Jacksonville (FL) that ODU played in their first year.

As someone mentioned, we once had BCS transfers in basketball that didn't pan out, therefore, that will be the case with our football team. That logic totally makes sense.

Just for kicks and giggles, I posted some of the players we recruited (transfers and high school recruits) on the Georgia Southern message board the other day to show them them some of the accolades and other FBS offers some of our players have that will likely be toward the top of the depth chart, so you guys can take a look at yourself at the list below. Like I said, as basketball has thought us, these guys are all busts, and will never amount to anything.

QBs
Star Jackson - not even going get into his accolades.
Drew Little - offer from Boston College among others.
Kelton Hill - offers from Army, Navy, Air Force and Jax St.

Offensive Line
Clyde Yandell - GA Tech's No. 2 OT on the depth chart. No. 38 OT in the nation coming out of HS. Had offers from Florida, NC State, Maryland, etc.
Joseph Gilbert - GA Tech's starter at OG, rated No. 21 OG in the country out of HS.
Ben Jacoby - transfer from Ball State, starter.
LaDeven Kirkland - had offers from Ole Miss, South Florida, Boston College and Rutgers coming out of HS.
Gabriel Hampton - formerly committed to Tennessee (before Fulmer got fired) and also had offers from the likes of Texas State, Texas Southern, etc.
Tim Wynn - ESPN No 81 OG in the country had about 18 D-I offers, including a bunch of Big 10 and C-USA teams.

Backs
Cole Moon - Rivals No. 10 Full back in the country. Multiple D-I offers, including Ga Southern.
Sam Burkhalter - Multiple D-I offers, including Samford. Had a preferred walk-on at GA Tech (BTW, the kid ran a 4.37 40-yard dash at CES combine his senior year)

Receivers
Sidney Haynes - ESPN No. 99 WR in the country, offers from GA Tech, ECU, Kentucky, etc.
Parris Lee - Rivals No. 62 back in the country, offers from Central Michigan, MTSU, Tulane, etc.

Defensive Backs/Safeties
Justin Hughes - originally committed to Troy, also had offers from FIU and Central Michigan
Isaiah Howard - offers from Central Michigan and Troy.
Fred Barnes - offers from Indiana, Miami (OH), etc.

Linebackers
Jake Muasau - Samoan beast, former Rivals Top 25 prospect from Arizona, had an offer from Nebraska and would have had multiple PAC-10 and Big 12 offers had his grades not slipped.
Louie Muasau - Jake's older brother, had an offer from Arizona coming out of HS.
Robert Ferguson - offers from West Virginia, Troy, Louisville, etc.
Aaron Gambrah- offers from App State, UCF, Tulane, UAB, etc.

Defensive Line
Sherrod Loud - offers from UAB, Western Michigan, LA Tech and Georgia Southern.
Christo Bilukidi - No 1. prospect from Canada, had an offer from Kansas.
CJ Stephens - offers from Troy and UAB.
Khiry Karriem - Offers from Southern Miss and Jax St.

Great post, I'll admit that I obviously did say you guys had some transfers for your basketball team that didnt pan out but I didnt mean the transfers for your football program wouldnt. I just meant that you never quite know. ODU had a transfer from UVA and we thought he'd dominate but he didnt even start for us. Jacksonville State will be a test, I agree, but they did lose Ryan Perriloux to graduation.

I wasn't referring to your post. I was referring to some folks on CAA Zone, mostly JMU fans -- you know, the same JMU fans that actual believe their athletic history matches, nay, surpasses ODU's.

oh alright because like I said I did mention the basketball transfers not quite playing to their potential but it was just an easy example of saying transfers never really live up to the hype not just at GSU but any school. As for JMU surpassing ODU, they are catching up especially the last couple years but I dont think they match or surpass what ODU has.

I'll give them the better football program obviously as well as them being able to get the better recruits in women's basketball but everything else its pretty much even, if not the advantage goes to ODU.

Seriously, I know you posted more after this, but I just had to stop there when you propped up an OVC team that has never won a playoff game. Sure, they're better than Jacksonville (FL), but let's not confuse OVC teams with being perennially good FCS teams.

I didn't "confuse" OVC teams as being perennially good FCS teams, I said Jax St., specifically, is a perennial top 25 team as evident by virtually all the pre-season and post-season FCS rankings. Just because they had a play-off ban stemming from academic infractions, it does not mean they are not a legitimate Top 25 FCS program. Their record speaks for themselves. Furthermore, my post was in reply to him saying that ODU was going to be the first test of the season for us, when obviously Jax St. would be the first true test, and obviously the second best team we'll play this year after Alabama.

While I did say that, I think I clarified it by stating it will be the first true road test but then again the only other road game GSU has is Campbell before that which they should win. GSU gets Jacksonville State at home so that will only help...
