The Voice Of God Bob Sheppard Dies At 99
NEW YORK - Bob Sheppard, whose elegant introductions of stars from Joe DiMaggio to Derek Jeter at Yankee Stadium for more than a half century earned him the nickname "The Voice of God," died Sunday. He was 99.
The revered public address announcer died at his Long Island home in Baldwin with his wife, Mary, at his side, the Yankees said.
Sheppard started with the Yankees in 1951 and he last worked at Yankee Stadium late in the 2007 season, when he became ill with a bronchial infection. He recorded a greeting to fans that was played at the original ballpark's final game on Sept. 21, 2008, and his audio recording still is used to introduce Jeter before each at-bat at home by the Yankees captain.

He was good. But "The Voice of God?!?" Hardly. I'm MUCH more likely to give that nod to James Earl Jones or Harry Kallas (sp?).

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Sheppard saw more glory than either of those combined.SuperHornet wrote:He was good. But "The Voice of God?!?" Hardly. I'm MUCH more likely to give that nod to James Earl Jones or Harry Kallas (sp?).

A number of announcers/broadcasters/voiceover men have been dubbed the Voice of God, so no one has an exclusive claim to it. When I think of the Voice of God, the man that instantly comes to mind is John Facenda, narrator of NFL films throughout the 60s an 70s. SH, I loved Harry Kalas and listened to him for roughly thirty years of my life, but I never heard him refeered to as the Voice of God.

And what does that have to do with his voice? Boy are Yankees fans ever insufferable. Especially ones not from New York. What happened to the bandwagon emoticon?Willie wrote:Sheppard saw more glory than either of those combined.SuperHornet wrote:He was good. But "The Voice of God?!?" Hardly. The Voice of the Yankees Dies
I was never a Yankee fan, but from my days in the 50s as a kid at Yankee Stadium the voice of Bob Sheppard always brought chills through me. He was so regal in his presentation. So pure. RIP Bob Sheppard.

Then maybe they should have called him the eyes of God.

How the cr@p did I forget Facenda? He has got to be the best highlight voice in the history of sports. There was a Raider highlight reel he did that was nothing short of awesome.93henfan wrote:A number of announcers/broadcasters/voiceover men have been dubbed the Voice of God, so no one has an exclusive claim to it.
