Interesting perspective. Would say that you can't look at single incidents to judge who is America's friend or enemy, though.

Trying to bring more democratic governments to nations of the world certainly is overrated.

This article was just another way of saying there are no permanent friends or enemies, only permanent interests.
The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."

- Thomas Jefferson, in letter to William S. Smith, 1787

From the article:
"When President Bush demanded elections in Egypt, Lebanon and Palestine, the winners were the Muslim Brotherhood, Hezbollah and Hamas.
The largest democracies in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia -- Brazil, South Africa, Turkey and India -- are all moving away from the United States.
Turkey is the archetype of a democratic nation moving away from America, as Ankara more accurately reflects the will of its people."

I'm not suggesting that Obama is the answer...
but we CAN NOT have another president like Bush who thinks Democracy is something that can be forced on other cultures and hammered over their existing structures

I'm not sure what the answer is
but it's certainly not forced Democracy and the idiotic suggestion that we'll be viewed as "Liberators"

I wish we'd lead by example in the global arena

Hell, the new "democracy" in the US is leading towards the tyranny of the majority. Unfortunately, the majority of people are quickly becoming ignorant people who want something for nothing.

It warms my heart!

Only three posts and someone hit the nail on the head, and a graduate of The Citadel, no less!

I mentioned some time ago the words of one of my mentors, a certain US Ambassador. In response to a question from one of my snarky classmates in orientation for new foreign service officers, specifically about his time as ambassador to Yugoslavia and then later one of the splinter states, about how countries like the US can support some of the dysfunctional states it has supported. The Ambassador replied that in the world of foreign affairs, there are no allies, only interests.

Only a true American exceptionalist thinks this way. We do not need to export democracy, we only need to uphold and protect our own. If it benefits America, then it should be done. If it does not benefit America, then it should not be done. Period.

Now, it just comes down to what kinds of results one would consider to be 'benefits'.
