I'm glad somebody has finally written an article challenging "Patriotism" as a Christian virtue... Christus Victor Ministries & Greg Boyd are always an interesting read. I've always argued that Patriotism is a Political & Nationalistic virtue not at all related to ones faith in God... but I get attacked on this idea

I think patriotism can rise from commonalities like religion. It is easy to be nationalistic if most of your fellow countrymen share similar religions, identities, etc.

But I agree that patriotism is certainly a separate issue from religion. Christianity has nothing to do with it, as I have seen some pretty patriotic Hindus, and the Buddhists in Vietnam were a strong factor against the Diem governement. Even in countries like Saudi Arabia, patriotism for country is trumped by religious 'piety', in fact, most Wahabbists would argue that patriotism is counter to Islam.

Patriotism, like religion, can be wonderful in the right context.

But both can be terribly dangerous and detrimental when taken to fanatical levels (which they all too often are).

If your only basis for doing/thinking something is "because it's patriotic" or "because my religion tells me to", without there being logical reason behind it, it is probably a bad thing.

Good post! I always argue for the patriot but have never had to disassociate it from religion and faith.
