I love Chucktown, but there is no way I'd call it a college town. IMHO Harrisonburg is MUCH more of a college town.ChickenMan wrote:From my experience..

So...by that definition the pig farm 24 miles from the house I grew up in is a mountain as it's elevation is 1,670 feet above sea level.CatMom wrote:A mountain appellation in the US is any land formation with elevation over 1000 ft. The west has what are considered high mountains.
Def = "a natural elevation of the earth surface rising more or less abruptly from the surrounding level and attaining an altitude which, relatively to the adjacent elevation, is impressive or notable."
Laugh your asses off, I could care. Go to the Himalayas or Alps and they'd laugh at you.
Hell, Iowa in general is a Mountain then, as the mean elevation of Iowa is 1,100 hundred feet.
Pretty much 80% of the continental US is a covered in mountains then.

Maybe I misunderstood.. I was judging based on a 'vistors' experience for a football weekend.. not as a 'college town' for a resident student.89Hen wrote:I love Chucktown, but there is no way I'd call it a college town. Not sure how you got 'visitors experience for a football weekend' out of the very first post...ChickenMan wrote:Maybe I misunderstood.. Im not saying we were the best beach! I fully acknowledge that there are some better ones on the eastern shore. However, Myrtle is still recognized as a top tourist destination no matter how you look at it. And when it comes to an issue of college towns it's one of the best places I experienced and I've heard others that have visited say the same thing. I think that besides Charleston, sc it's the best town to go to school in the Big South!rueful wrote:And Myrtle Beach is only good for golf vacations. Its a town of crappy beaches and Jersey Shore rejects. Not that lynchburg is better, we have 0 beaches, but if your gonna go to a beach town, get your money's worth and go elsewhere

Well if that's the criteria.. very few opinions here would have much validity.. as unless you actually lived.. worked or spent a lot of time in those 'college towns' you wouldn't have much basis for a valid opinion.bandl wrote:...who has the most to offer its students and recruits ?

I'd agree on Charleston - it's an awesome city, but I'm not sure it would qualify as a bona fide college town in spite of having several there.89Hen wrote:I love Chucktown, but there is no way I'd call it a college town. Williamsburg seems to be all old, retired people and pancake houses. I can't imagine living in that town for very long. And, William and Mary has a great campus... it's just a shame what's grown up around it.Tribe4SF wrote:
Williamsburg is a little sleepy from a college student perspective, but I have to object to the characterization coming from an ASU fan. My last trip to Boone was in 2001, and the highlight of the weekend was the Boone Christmas parade where the loudest applause was for the Suburban Propane truck.

"Grown up around it"? You mean Colonial Williamsburg?? Maybe colonial means something different to you, but it's not like Colonial Willamsburg has been growing up around W&M over the years - it's pretty much been that way for a good 300-400 years now.Skjellyfetti wrote:Williamsburg seems to be all old, retired people and pancake houses. Re: Best and worse FCS college towns?
I know this was not the question, but:
The worst College Programs to tailgate at are in my experience:
Rhode Island - no tailgating allowed
Villanova - very few parking lots available to tailgate
Northeastern - No parking lots to tailgate at all - only street parking and no tailgating allowed.
The Best College Programs to tailgate at are in my experience:
UD - plenty of parking and festive atmosphere
Navy - Parking is cramped but Annapolis is a great town to party in after the game.
Towson - plenty of parking for tailgating
Lehigh - plenty of room to tailgate
Georgia Southern - GSU fans are very easy to get a long with
Citadel - Charleston is a great town to party after the game and there is plenty of grass to tailgate on.

On December 12, 1775 the Continental Congress created a Battalion of minuteman from the three counties in Delaware. Kent county militia were fans and owners of Game Cocks; Fight'n Blue Hens as they were called. The Fight'n Blue Hens became known far and wide as the very best Fighting Game Cocks around. Thus, the Blue Hen was established.

Re: Best and worse FCS college towns?
i would have to agree with this list though i've only been to half the conf. but still, u gotta think true college towns have to automatically be the top 3. how is cheney though??? all the rest though would be "urban" cities.BearIt wrote:Canadian Rockies kick the crap out of what we have in the lower 48, including Montana and Colorado. I'm looking forward to my visit to the Canadian Rockies next month - I doubt they're as awesome as Montana or Colorado, but I'm sure they'll be much nicer than these old worn out hills we have on the East coast.
It's like Glacier Park on steroids.
To keep the thread on track: Never been to Greeley so I can't rank it, but I've been to all the other Big Sky towns. Pocatello is definately last. It sounds like Greeley may be in competition for the last spot though.
1. Missoula
2. Bozeman
3. Flagstaff
4. Ogden
5. PDX
6. Sacramento
7. Cheney
8. Pocatello
? Greeley
In Utah we only have 2 "college towns" out of our 6 DI schools - Southern Utah Univ and Utah State. Both are good towns to go to college at.

Enough with the pictures of skanks.
If I wanted a pin up picture of W&M's homecoming queen I would Twitter her (or him, or it.)
Not too far from Boone is Mount Mitchell which is 6,684 feet tall, the highest point east of the Rockies. Grandfather Mountain is just a couple of feet shorter, and is just outside Boone,NC.
Those Rocky Mountains are beautiful, but you hardly ever visit the tops, unless you are racing up or down in a four wheeler. Been there.
Nothing like the mountains of North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. Lush and green with rivers from white water to gently flowing. Ski slopes, ski boarding, gorgeous lakes, Scottish Highland games, beautiful girls....ow my.
Boone, just a few miles from Tennessee and Virginia; with it's European type shops, and shopping centers.
Boone, NC is my pick. Kidd-Brewer Stadium, The Rock, on a fall afternoon, nothing could be finer.
