I am not going to read "8" pages to see the responses to this. In the three times I have been to Greeley the stockyard smell never happened. Had a great time, great breweries, bars, restaurants and even caught a God Smack concert after one game. Not the worse FCS town.GoRacer1 wrote:Example, I heard the smell at Northern Colorado was horrible.(I cannot confirm this personally).

Anybody who thinks playing in a dome makes a great atmosphere or nice stadium cannot be trusted to even make these judgments. So your list is ruled out as null and void.BigSkyFootball wrote:Rating the Big Sky Confrence towns:

I can't believe this has gone this long without a youngstown mention. Cleenze, it's waaaay worse than c'dale, unless you're into housing projects and all that they have to offer, such as a virtually unlimited supply of meth and crack whores. C'dale is just dull and boring, y'town is dangerous. Sort of like DesMoines on its worst day.
TerreHaute is awful, the people are ugly and weird, and the paper mill makes the whole town smell.
Springfield was a fun time, nice friendly people, plenty to do, only minor complaint is the tailgating on concrete parking lots.
Macomb, BORING
Charleston(il) BORING
I need to get to UNI, NDSU, and SDSU before I comment on them.

I've also heard that Richmond was a pretty dangerous city in terms of crime, but the Spider fans said that was starting to change.
Thank you for backing me on the Carbondale and Terre Houte though.
I've been through Macomb twice, but I never got out of the car so I couldn't comment on that one, and I hadn't heard any first hand reports on it.

Re: Best and worse FCS college towns?
I've got a great DesMoines story. As you know, Drake is in the middle of the ghetto in DesMoines, much as Bradley is in Peoria. 3 years ago we went to Drake for the MVC women's conf tourney with another couple. Friday evening after the last game was played we decided we would like some beer and a deck of cards. The ladies stayed in the room while Marty and I walked to this little mini mart gas station thing we remembered seeing right off the west edge of campus.clenz wrote:I keep wanting to bring Youngstown up, but I keep forgetting too. SO, we get to the place, and right away notice the fully armed security guard up on this little wooden platform right in the center of the store. Seems a little odd and out of place for a college campus, so, when we get to the check out counter with our playing cards and beer I ask the clerk. The clerk points to this blackish-maroon stain on the floor behind the counter, and tells me that they had an armed robery the night before, and the clerk was shot and killed.
Because we look more than a little out of place by this time, he asks if we walked there from campus, and tells us we best not try to walk back, especially carrying beer. We made the walk back to the Holiday Inn much quicker than the walk to the mini mart. More sort of like on a dead run with our hair on fire scared to death for our lives.

Yeah, for the most part Des Moines is a nice place. The area right about the Drake campus SUCKS something hard though.OSBF wrote:I've got a great DesMoines story. As a current student at UNC I would say it is an ok college town. There are a few things to do there and Denver is only an hour away so you can also go down there. Fort Collins where Colorado State is located is only 40 min away and is a better college town and a good amount of people will go up there on the weekends. The rumor about the smell is false. Yes it smells every now and then but it in not constant. It can be bad some days unfortunately but those days are few and far between. I am interested in seeing how the new Bear Aware program works in making Greeley a better college town. It can work I think, but both the business and school need to be into it cant be a one sided deal. I haven't visited an of the other Big Sky schools, but plan to in the future and hope to have a good time at all of them.

Sorry, but if your reasoning is that it's a good college town because it's only 40 minutes away from a better college town, an hour away from a major city, and that the smell isn't constant... just present on some days... it probably falls toward the "worse" side of the college town continuum.uncbears8228 wrote:As a current student at UNC I would say it is an ok college town. I would agree it is towards the lower end and is just ok. If someone was looking for the college experience like they have in the movies then i would definitely say UNC is no the place for themSkjellyfetti wrote:Sorry, but if your reasoning is that it's a good college town because it's only 40 minutes away from a better college town, an hour away from a major city, and that the smell isn't constant... just present on some days... it probably falls toward the "worse" side of the college town continuum.uncbears8228 wrote:As a current student at UNC I would say it is an ok college town. CAA (in order IMHO)
UMass - absolutely loved trips to Amherst
Delaware - Now that Chrysler is gone, the UofDel is #1 and #2
W&M - not sure why so many people hate it, one of my favorite CAA trips
JMU - quiet, like a college town should be
URI - only been once and was more inclined to go to Newport than stay in Kinston
Villanova - had fun the couple times I was on campus
Richmond - beautiful campus, but ugly city, will have to see how new stadium affects visit

Richmond has some nice parts in the city, but the majority of it is just your generic virginia town consisting of either rednecks or hood rats. Richmond does have a nice campus, glad they will have a nice stadium to match. VCU is also a good campus

Gonna have to go with the ohio towns of youngstown and Toledo as two of the worst I've visited. of course my employer pays a visit to Buis creek NC to play campbell this year and i have a feeling it might be worse.
Some of the best have to include Myrtle beach(coastal) and Here in ATL(Georgia state[no homer]) I enjoyed Lynchburg (liberty) and Suprisingly enough my trip up to culhowee(western Carlolina) was a lot of fun as well. here's my full list:
The good:
Lynchburg VA
Atlanta GA
Conway SC
Culhowee NC
Charleston SC
Williamsburg VA
The Bad:
Boiling Springs NC
Elon NC
Clinton SC
The UGLY:
Toledo OH
Youngstown OH

Re: Best and worse FCS college towns?
In BSF's defense, I don't think he was saying that playing in a dome is a good thing at all. He said the 'only redeeming quality is they play in a dome, so you're out of the cold.' That doesn't sound like a sterling review to me, it sounds like he is saying "well....at least you aren't freezing your ass off outside while you have to watch that pathetic excuse of a football team". Nary of mention in his post of ISU being a 'great atmoshpere' or a dome being a 'good thing'. And he did rank ISU #8 out of 9....Ursus A. You can't seriously be ranking Towson behind Richmond, Villanova and URI as far as college town. Have you ever venture outside of the TowsonCenter/Stadium area? I will say that I have enjoyed trips to Missoula, great fans, fun but small downtown and good scenery.
Carbondale had very welcoming folks and gracious fans. I know they will enjoy their new stadium.

Towson is absolutely one of my favorite road trips. I only tailgate, and go to the game and, as 89 says, the parking is the best. The rest of the time in the Inner Harbor and at Fells Point. I don't know if anyone posted this, but Umass(Amherst) is not in a big city and either is Villanova(Villanova-Radnor)GoRacer1 wrote:Besides the allure of the big city schools like UMass, Nova and the like ,who has the most to offer its students and recruits ?.

I do not think any of the current CAA football School is actually in a BIG City(absent outgoing North Eastern). Unless you consider Richmond as a Big City???
Incoming football program Georgia State, however, is in the Big City of Atlanta.
On December 12, 1775 the Continental Congress created a Battalion of minuteman from the three counties in Delaware. Kent county militia were fans and owners of Game Cocks; Fight'n Blue Hens as they were called. The Fight'n Blue Hens became known far and wide as the very best Fighting Game Cocks around. Thus, the Blue Hen was established.
