The 1979 version of the Battle for the Old Mountain Jug between Appalachian State and Western Carolina was the second football game ever shown on a fledgling network named ESPN. Apps won 35-27.

The writeup was stolen from Wikipedia...
The Hugo Bowl:
In 1989, ESPN was to broadcast a Thursday Night Football game between the Georgia Southern Eagles and the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders. However, Hugo, a category 4 hurricane, was headed straight towards the coast of Georgia. At the time of landfall, Hugo ranked as the eleventh most intense hurricane to strike U.S. this century, and it delivered the highest ever recorded storm surge on the East Coast. Nevertheless, the decision was made to continue with the game. For safety purposes, an open line was kept between the press box at Paulson Stadium and the National Hurricane Center in Florida. The Eagles went on to defeat MTSU by a score of 26-0 in a classic that will forever be known in Eagle history as the Hugo Bowl.
This happened to be GSU's first night game (under portable lights) and ESPN's first Thursday night game.

Liberty University (with as bad as football has been at times) has won 40 consecutive games at home when scoring at least 30 points

In 2010 Liberty scored 50 points four times...the only time in school history that has happened

After Beau Baldwin wins the Robinson this year, EWU will be on that list. :D

The last FBS/I-A team Harvard faced was Army, most recently in 1991. Harvard and William and Mary have played against each other several times, most recently in 1993.
Top two wishes of Ivy football fans everywhere: Playoff participation by the Ivy champion and the diversification of opponents in scheduling games.

The 1942 Rose Bowl was hosted by participant and Southern Conference member Duke University in Durham, NC. Extra bleachers were provided by UNC and NC State. Duke lost.

In 1932, Miami sent a letter to William and Mary to schedule a football game. Instead, the letter came to the Norfolk Division of W&M (now ODU) and so instead, the Norfolk Division played Miami and lost 6-2 in what became the predecessor to the Orange Bowl.

In October 1988 at the Crystal Palace Stadium in London the Richmond Spiders took on the BU Terriers in the first regular season college football game to be played in Europe. Despite being out gained 423 to 172 yards, the Spiders prevailed 20-17 in the first and only Imperial Bowl.

Best part about that is the fact that Cumberland didn't have a football team...a prior engagement had been made to play the game and after Cumberland beat Georgia Tech in basketball they refused to let them out of the game...so Cumberland had to throw a team together at the last second.

I thought it was because Cumberland beat them something like 16-0 in baseball, and GT got all pissy over that and made them play the game.

My bad, it was baseball. 22-0. Apparently Georgia Tech accused Cumberland of using ringers.

In Prairie View's first year after suspending their football program, the Panthers were outscored 617-48. Sadly 20 of their points came against Southern.

Bayou Classic Facts:
The first Bayou Classic was a 21-0 Grambling win
Southern has scored 50 points in a Classic game and Grambling has scored 50+ twice (SU in 1981 and GSU in1977 and 2005)
The lowest scoring classic was a 10-2 Grambling win, followed by a 10-3 Southern win
Southern had the longest win streak at 8 games. Grambling had a 9 game win streak (but it started before the Classic was started in 1974)
7 coaches have led Southern in the Bayou Classic

The series between Harvard and W&M is tied at 4-4-2, with the Tribe winning the last 4.

The last FBS/1A team to play AT William & Mary was Temple in 1984.

In an always competitive series, the Delaware Blue Hens are 16-0 vs the West Chester Golden Rams in the last sixteen meetings, highlighted by a thrilling 84-0 win by Delaware in 2000. The series was canceled for a year, much to the disappointment of the always eager West Chester squad, when the World Trade Center and Pentagon were attacked on September 11, 2001.

In a 1973 episode of the TV series M*A*S*H, the characters listened to the Army-Navy game on Armed Forces Radio, which Navy won, 42-36. Had the game really taken place, it would have been the highest-scoring Army-Navy contest ever.

The Outland Trophy for the best interior lineman is named after John Outland, who played for the University of Kansas and the University of Pennsylvania. He was an All-American tackle in 1897 and an All-American halfback in 1898.

Unusual grouping atop the final 1949 AP Football poll. Can anyone today imagine Army and Rice being in the Top 5? Or Cornell sitting in the 12 spot with Princeton at #18? (TWO Ivies in the poll?!?) For course, my fave here is little ol' College (now University) of the Pacific at #10. With that record, they should have been much higher, but at least they were Top 10 at SOME point in school history! This team was led by the incredible Eddie LeBaron, who later became the first QB in Dallas Cowboys history.

Ranking Team Record
1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 9-0
2 Oklahoma Sooners 10-0
3 California Golden Bears 10-0
4 Army Cadets 9-0
5 Rice Owls 9-1
6 Ohio State Buckeyes 6-1-2
7 Michigan Wolverines 6-2-1
8 Minnesota Gophers 7-2
9 LSU Tigers 8-2
10 Pacific Tigers 10-0
11 Kentucky Wildcats 9-2
12 Cornell Big Red 8-1
13 Villanova Wildcats 8-1
14 Maryland Terrapins 7-1
15 Santa Clara Broncos 7-2-1
16 North Carolina Tar Heels 7-3
17 Tennessee Volunteers 7-2-1
18 Princeton Tigers 6-3
19 Michigan State Spartans 6-3
20 (t) Baylor Bears 8-2
20 (t) Missouri Tigers 7-3
