Post by ATrain »

He'd have my vote.

If you force diversity, as many places are these days, in the end, you leave out qualified white males. It is discrimination. There is no other way around it.

If that is the case, then he is a piece of shit. Discrimination is deplorable. Let the best person get the job.

Yeah, I'm not really sure what he's saying is wrong. It's sort of the same overall message that the USDA lady was trying to make in her speech. The system is rigged to pit the poor of all races against one another. Which leads one to surmise the intent as keeping them all fighting amongst themselves for the scraps so they don't notice when the master walks away with the whole bird. It'd get real interesting around here if all those poor white southern baptists suddenly got wise to the man. :o

Eh, I see your point and I see Webb's point and I agree with it to a certain degree...

But, "government mandated diversity" would include things like Brown vs. Board, Little Rock vs. Arkansas, Civil Rights Act, etc.... right?

Because it seems to me like Brown vs. Board mandated diversity by outlawing white-only schools and black-only schools? No? :?

I think it might be a little difficult for Congress to overturn Brown v. BoE, given that Brown was a Supreme Court decision. However, Congress could repeal its numerous laws concerning diversity.

I'm still just trying to figure how it is that Sen. Webb wants women out of the workplace and back in the kitchen.

Webb is a man of many contrasts. I'm still not sure where he will come from on any topic. That's probably because there aren't too many former Reagan officials serving as US Senators with a D behind their name.

I don't see the connection with Brown vs. the Board of education or the Civil rights act, as I don't see those about diversity as much as civil rights, but there are a ton of other things that this could effect. I'm not really sure where this starts and stops....

I believe Hen is confused. There was some controversy around our governor, Bob McDonnell about a thesis he wrote promoting the belief that many families would be better served with a stay-at-home mom vice the added income from a career. Never heard of Webb in any sort of issue like that, though.

However, to be fair, Webb is an absolute piece of shit who campaigned on his military record and "independence from special interest groups". He has voted lock step with Reid on all major Dem initiatives. He is only reaching across the aisle (guns rights, too) lately because the majority of Virginians hate him. He is our own little version of a democratic John McCain, and will hopefully have a very short career.

My percpetion is that the "diversity" thing is a way to get around calling what's going on "reverse discrimination" or "quotas." The idea is that "diversity" makes for an objectively more effective organization. Therefore, being of a nature that contributes to "diversity" is a qualification in itself. The idea is associated with research such as this:

http://www.stanford.edu/~aantonio/psychsci.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In my opinion the results do not provide sufficient evidence to conclude that "racial diversity" improves complex thinking but I think the authors certainly try to act as though they did. To me it's part of a larger problem associated with the fact that there is a strong bias towards wanting to believe that racial diversity in and of itself improves outcomes.

Anyway, the idea is that even if a certain person is not as objectively qualified for a position by normal standards they are indeed objectively qualified because they contribute to the "diversity" that makes the organization more effective. To me it's total gobbledygook. But I think that's what's going on.
Well, I believe that I must tell the truth
And say things as they really are
But if I told the truth and nothing but the truth
Could I ever be a star?

The question is should the government level the playing field through civil rights laws so that people can choose their own paths and rise or fall based upon their own choices or should the government mandate diversity through holdbacks and quotas and guarantee that we will all reach the same plateau through government dictate?

The rest of the world has tried this and it has not worked. They are trending back from a government controlled out come toward capitalism and individual freedom.

Why do we want to go in the opposite direction?

Generally speaking, from what I have observed, Webb votes his conscience in most things. I can respect that. I don't agree with him on several issues, but for the most part I respect him as a Senator.

He may have run on his military record, but he, above others, has a right to. He is one of the most decorated Marines of the Vietnam War.

If you want a look into how Webb perceives himself you might want to take a look at one of his books, called "Born Fighting: The Scots-Irish in America".
