San Diego in the Pioneer???

Post by grizzaholic »

Pulled from another thread.

Why is San Diego in the Pioneer? One would think they, and the rest of the Pioneer would save a ton of money on flights, if they were to just move to the Great West. Thoughts?

I saw these discussions on the other site quite a bit on the other site a couple of years ago. It doesn't make sense to me either but the gist of it is that USD in the pioneer is a necessity due to USD's basketball conference affiliation wishes. They would have to be part of the GW for MBB as well if they were to join apparently and USD doesn't want to do that and the GW would also require them to provide scholly's which they are not willing to do either.

That is my whole point! Instead of spending all this money flying your sports teams across the country why not put that money into scholly's and recruit better athletes? I must be missing something here. I tried looking some stuff up on AGS the other day and am not allowed to do any searching.

To be competitive in the GWFC, they would have to give out 126 schollies - 63 to men, 63 offsetting to women.

For a private school, at say $25K tution a year, that is over three million a year. Flying 4 times a year to the east coast is cheaper...

With better athletes they could compete better with bigger schools and thus make more money for the school, right?

But don't they have to do fly over there for bball as well?
Nope - they are in the West Coast League for all other sports.

Besides San Diego, it includes:

Pepperdine, Loyola (3 hour bus rides)
Santa Clara, St. Mary's, San Francisco (1 hour flights)
Portland and Gonzaga (3 hour flights).

Those teams are small, and undoubtably fly commercial.

They are not in the PL for MBB and WBB they are in a higher profile conference with Gonzaga, Santa Clara, etc. and I believe the tuition is closer to 40K from what one of the USD guys said before so they don't make the long flights across country for BB. Also BB is their money maker not football.

I guess I shouldn't leave this box open so long to answer or I should just let dback take it over when we're on the same page with answers. You are welcome though.

I agree....and I find i no surprise that a Montana fan would dissect the reasons why a school shouldn't travel....

Unlike Montana, and to a lesser extent Arizona, the citizens of NC value secondary education, so we have more than 2-3 colleges for our children....which makes it convenient for football scheduling....besides, it's our reward fo traveling to Lousiana, Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee and such this year....where'd ya'll go, Tempe?

Tempe, Missoula, Cheney, Cedar City, Greeley, Pocatello

The armpits (other than Missoula) of western football...

And Arizona values secondary education - just sees no need to put a small 4 year college in every two-horse town in the state...

Especially when there isn't 2 horses, or people, smart enough to complete them.........

Out West people get an education in the first 4 years, unlike back East. You need all of them colleges because if you get kicked out of one for bad grades, behavior issues, making bad moonshine, you don't have to move, just go down the street to the next one.

No, but I constantly here how tough it is...and how easy we have it "back east"...

Well, if you choose to live where you live, you also choose to take the results...stop bringing up the mileage and how tough and expensive it is...it is your choice...

That's my point...

And my point Col. was to Appa who says we never leave the confines. Making the point that is not the case. A defense if you will to his broken record ramblings. I wouldn't trade spots with you or Appa and the likewise may be true but his point is as obtuse as his education.
