The Reds are in quite a pickle with their managerial situation.

The GM is Walt Jockety, former St Lou GM. The master plan was to fire Dusty Baker at years end and hire Larussa/Duncan/McGwire as a package. Dusty has pretty well screwed that all up. Very hard to fire him now, especially if the make the playoffs as the wildcard.

Astros and Phillies have agreed to a deal that send Oswalt to the Phightin Phils and Happ to the Astros. Roy needs to approve the deal and it should happen in the morning.

Wow - I feel so dirty. It's like we just raped the Astros. Ed Wade - the gift that just keeps on giving. First he leaves Philly after a disastrous stretch as a GM, and then he just goes out of his way in trade after trade trying to make the Phillies better.

Heck, I actually had to look up who the heck Villar was (he's playing A ball for Lakewood). Both Villar and Gose are batting .270 or lower in A ball, and in a strange occurrence, both are speedsters (Gose has 36 SB's and Villar has 38 - although Gose isn't all that picky - he's been caught stealing an eye popping 27 times). You figure Wade's putting together a track team down there, what with the earlier trade when the Phils gave him Michael Bourne. Nice the Phils didn't part with Worley or Singleton.

And then, on top of it, it sounds like the Phils got Oswalt to back off the 2012 guarantee by letting him keep his no trade clause and upping the buyout in 2012 from $2M to $3M. And, the Astros are reportedly kicking in upwards to $12M.

If anyone sees Ed Wade on the side of a road with his pants around his ankles, let the authorities know.

The Phillies definitely received the better end of this trade. Roy is a great pitcher and the Phillies arguably have the best 1,2,3 rotation. I think this trade solidified their return to the playoffs and set them up for another WS run. Roy is a great teammate that quietly goes about his business.

While the trade looks lopsided, this deal saved money for Houston. Oswalt is owed $21 million through the end of the next season and there is a mutual option for $16 million for the following season. Houston would have had a difficult time not picking up the option. They are paying 2007 contract prices in a 2010 recession economy. In essence, they paid $11 million to save avoid paying an additional $26 million. The Astros are not going to win this year. It is unlikely that they will compete for a championship next year. They have three players (Oswalt, Berkman & Lee) that each had no-trade contracts. These three players account for half of the teams $92 million payroll. The farm system was the worst in baseball 3 years ago. It is improving, but it will probably be 2 years until the prospects start to show up in Houston. I think when management realized they had 2 options (St. Louis or Philadelphia), they decided to not trade Oswalt to a division rival.

Ed Wade never gets enough credit for bringing up the current nucleus (Rollins, Utley, Howard, et al) and then he gets kicked out of town, another guy (Gillick) gets the World Series glory, then he sends $11M and an ace to his old team for a guy just back from a forearm/elbow rehab and a bucket of bolts, making the guy after Gillick (RA Jr) look like a hero.

Villar, who has been removed from single-A Lakewood's lineup tonight, is hitting .272 with two home runs and 36 RBIs. Villar, 19, has 42 errors in 99 games as Lakewood's shortstop but projects as a corner infielder down the line.

Gose, who turns 20 on Aug. 10, is hitting .263 with four home runs and 20 RBIs for single-A Clearwater. He has 36 stolen bases but has been caught stealing 27 times.

Now, now, let's not forget that the guy who was really in charge of developing the Phil's current nucleus was Mike Arbuckle. Wade was the king of including no trade clauses in guy's contracts and signing aging players to long term extensions (Burrell, Thome, Lieberthal, and the all-time great David Bell).

And I think Ed's wikipedia says it best:

Wade was known for his deadline deals in the heat of pennant races, which included bringing in relievers Mike Williams and Todd Jones, backup catcher Kelly Stinnett and bench player Randall Simon among others.

I have trouble even remembering who those players were.

And remember, Wade has experience in trading away ace pitchers for virtually nothing - he did swing that Curt Schilling trade back in '00.
