Just plain hate! Richmond vs JMU
Re: Just plain hate! Richmond vs JMU
We've really gotten off topic here - this is supposed to be about hate between UR and JMU - not UR and Delaware
I find it hard to believe that someone is complaining about UR moving out of City Stadium. I'm guessing that person's level of donation to UD will not be high enough to get tickets to the UR game
Yes, the facility is smaller but for those who haven't seen it in person (granted I'm biased) but it is a pretty darn nice stadium - the pictures haven't really done it justice. And for those who don't know, our campus is pretty nice too - you'll enjoy being able to spend a day tailgating on it. I get the feeling from seeing both up close that the size of the facility is very similar to what is at Elon (but with a smaller capacity) and a more even distribution between sides.
And yes, the track is not ideal - but this place was built as a multipurpose facility and that was the plan since day 1. And really, the track puts people about 10 feet further back than with no track - big freakin deal. At least they were smart enough to place the stands high enough (at least 8 feet) to be able to see over the players.

Unless each of your running lanes is only about a foot wide Give me a break. An 8 lane track may be around 20 feet wide, but because it arcs out slightly means the fans along the sidelines are about 40 feet further from the action than they otherwise would be with a normal distance from the sidelines to stands. Take a look at the aerial view of any stadium and you can see that. JMU has moved the lower deck on the west side about 40 feet closer. That makes a big difference.ur2K wrote:We've really gotten off topic here - this is supposed to be about hate between UR and JMU - not UR and Delaware

Don't mistake honest criticism of what some UR outsiders think were very poor decisions by the instutition for hatred of UR, its fans or teams.ur2K wrote:We've really gotten off topic here - this is supposed to be about hate between UR and JMU - not UR and Delaware
If you and your fellow UR fans really believe that the FB field is befitting of UR FB, then enjoy and have at it. Why would you care to get your backs up when others offer their perceptions? Enjoy it, man.

You really think moving to our new on campus stadium is a detriment to UR's football program?henfan wrote:Don't mistake honest criticism of what some UR outsiders think were very poor decisions by the instutition for hatred of UR, its fans or teams.ur2K wrote:We've really gotten off topic here - this is supposed to be about hate between UR and JMU - not UR and Delaware

And I quote:
The new football stadium will not only help the football program, which brought in a recruiting class that was ranked second in the nation by Rivals.com, but all of the UR athletics teams as it fosters a great game day atmosphere on campus for a school that has an enrollment of less than 3,000 students.
"For the students, it's big," said Scott. "I've seen the student support grow over the last five or six years from almost nothing to having some of the best student supporters in the country."
Richmond, which plays in the tough Colonial Athletic Association, sold out its' 4,000 season tickets months ago in anticipation of Robins Stadium's inaugural stadium - more than doubling the 2008 season total of 1,737.
"When you go to Villanova or James Madison or Delaware or William & Mary - those are great atmospheres and tough places to play on the road," said Scott. "The teams (in the CAA) are excellent so you need any advantage you can get - if our crowd can be one, that will be a great help."
Single-game tickets have been snapped up as well as only tickets for the Towson game are remaining. Following a pre-sale of single-game tickets to season ticket holders and Spider Club members, as well as University ticket obligations for students, Family Weekend, Homecoming, and the visiting team, the other five home games currently have no tickets available for purchase.
"People like to see a successful product, and once you win people want to become involved with the program," said Scott. "Sometimes, the best motivation for people to want season tickets is the inability to get them. We wanted to create a tough ticket and we did. People responded by buying them all."

I thought the same thing when I read that.

That comes in the second phase. BDK already answered this, the stands are 40 feet closer. It will make a major difference.Bostonspider wrote:Just because the track is no longer purple does not mean the student stands are any closer to the field than they were when the track was there... Re: Just plain hate! Richmond vs JMU
Just to add my two cents here...
For whoever said we were giving up revenue by moving to a smaller stadium, consider:
• We had 1,773 season ticket holders @ $100 each last year = $177,300
• We have 4,000 season ticket holders this year @ a MINIMUM of $150 each = $600,000. This doesn't take into consideration the six luxury suites that I'm sure cost 5-digits each, and three sections of donor-level seats that required a couple thousand dollars each just to get into. So we're probably looking at close to $750k or more through season tickets ALONE – an increase of nearly $600,000 from last year. I don't know what single-game tickets cost, because I didn't buy any and they're pretty much all sold out, but I am sure they cost more than last year too. We'll do just fine revenue wise.
As for the size...
The deal is that several years ago, a new zoning classification was placed over the city side of the campus to expedite requests for certain projects. At the time, the former administration could have asked for the right to build a 10,000 seat stadium (or perhaps larger) but chose not to because it believed no stadium would ever be built on campus. Missed opportunity. When we decided to build this one, we had to go to the city and get a specific permit for this size.
It's a pretty well understood thing from all sides (UR, neighbors and city), that if we do things right for 2-3 years, we'll be able to get permission to build more seats with no problem. I am guessing that eventually we'll be in the 12k range.
Third, JMU fans who can't afford the $500 to join the Duke Club and get tickets to the UR game this year will be pleased to know that UR will be renting a tented area on the tennis courts overlooking the stadium to visiting schools, so maybe you can pay whatever your school charges you to hang out there for awhile and watch us pummel you.

"Spiders call JMU fans Barney."...what is a Barney, a redneck?...A large percentage of JMU alum are from Wash DC so I don't get the redneck connection...how about riot starting, drink on Thursday night, suburban accountant wannabeez?
Bring on the hate UR...
P.S. If/when JMU goes the FBS route it will be with an appropriate conference, never the sun belch. I'd like to see a new regional D1A conference with several of our CAA members.

This thread topic is great, so we should definitely get back to it. I can feel the hate bubbling.
I think a UR fan could be forgiven calling a JMU'er a Barney for a variety of reasons. They're dressed up in purple like the obnoxious childrens' star. True enough, they also had those idiotic riots this past spring that made students challenging the SWAT team and setting dumpsters on fire look dumber than Barney Fife.

I think we agree that we don't want them to go to the SunBelt, and I know they've said they don't want to, but it just takes one idiot's spin on an idea to change their minds. Let's face it, we're not really expecting the SEC or ACC to come knockin' down our door and a uniform move by several CAA members would be about as well respected as the Sun Belt.
In other news, I know I said I like UR's stadium and I do, but I need somebody to explain again why they built the track around the field...

You guys may not care whether your stadium has a track, but I think most people on here would think they are a big deal and would rather not have them, as the closer you are to the action, the better.bandl wrote:I agree...no big deal. It is a big deal when you're talking having your closest fans around 40 feet from the sideline as opposed to 80, and your furthest fans are about 1/3-1/4 closer. Take a look at aerial views of I-AA stadiums without tracks compared to stadiums with tracks and you'll see what I'm talking about. The one thing I hated about Bridgeforth until recently. And since most I-A stadiums now longer have tracks, having one looks bush league.
