Well, maybe not....he didn't seem too smart to begin with. I'm actually surprised it was loaded in the first place.

Also - I know a lot of cops. They very very rarely carry their weapons when not on duty or working security on the side.

Why carry the liability and potential to lose your job?

(I know, I know.....there are some people that feel the need to carry all the time because they fear for their lives...blah blah blah...bullshit).

Wasn't necessarily thinking about doing it in the Dog Park....

Any dog owner going into a dog park with a German Shepherd should know how to handle things without lethal force. If anyone else pulls out a gun and shoots a dog in a dog park, don't you think they'd be hauled right into court?
Shouldn't the Husky owner also be responsible for his dog? No, I don't think anyone else would be hauled off to jail.

To boot, any dog owner going into a dog park knows that you never keep your dog on a leash if there are other dogs in the park unleashed. It makes the dog feel trapped and vulnerable, the result being that they can and will defend itself and attack anyone, human or dog, around them. I've seen it happen several times. A caged/leashed animal in close proximity to a free/unleashed animal is almost never a good thing.

So....if this dog owner isn't aware of this simple fact about dogs in general, let alone with a dog that is generally considered to be one of the most intelligent and lethal (if need be) breeds in the world...what makes anyone think that he would know how to handle what is generally considered to be a docile, family-oriented and intelligent breed like a Siberian Huskie? A Siberian Huskie could never threaten a healthy grown man's life, especially an active police officer. A German Shepherd yes, but not a Siberian Huskie.
German Shepherds don't really have that strong of a bite force, it's the way the dogs are bread as to whether they are killers or not. The Husky was a regular at the park, and may have been threatened by the prospect of a new alpha male. Huskies have a tendency to want to be the Alpha.

Agree 100%. The trigger happy cop has the right to defend himself but firing a gun in a crowded dog park is also incredibly reckless.

This guy should not be able to carry a firearm.
What is meant by crowded, 5 people, 10 people? Not much has been shown as to the logistics of the situation.

For discharging a weapon on public property? C'mon Gil...you're reaching...charges weren't filed, the authorities covered for their Blue brethren...no need to try to rationalize this as a "sound" decision & logical outcome of one dog getting rough with another dog in a leash-free, fenced-in "bark park"....

While I agree the officer was too reactionary, nobody seems to care that the other dogs sitter was not even watching when the shooting took place. Had he been responsible, the dog would still be alive.

So this guy is a bringing a new dog to a dog park and doesn't have any idea how to initiate his dog into the mix? Seems pretty stupid to me...

And you may be right about the huskies you've encountered. I've never owned a huskie, but I have known a few. My experience has always been that they prefer to act like puppies their entire life. You just need to show them some affection/attention and give them something to do. Maybe the owners of the huskies I knew had already established themselves as the alpha.

The dog-sitter should be blamed, yes. But at worse, it should be because the dog he was in care of bit the arm of a grown man. There just isn't any excuse for a grown man to freak out and shoot a dog because he is scared.

I worked as a dog catcher in college, most dog owner are (not stupid), but blinded by their affection for their dog.

I agree with you there. But unfortunately, I think there are more stupid dog owners nowadays than there were back in your college days. People that don't know anything about 'Alpha' or 'dog pack mentality' or that 'poodles should all be shot because they look like huge rats with a perm', etc.

Yep...if he scares that easy, perhaps a career in federal law enforcement is not the path he should have chosen....something you think would have been discovered drung a psych analysis prior to issuing the guy a weapon & the authority to use it...
