Then why didn't you do well?
I did OK, probably in the top third (I wish the numbers were still up so I wasn't guessing), but picking W/Ls comes down to guessing right on two or three upsets each week.

It's where the skill comes in. C'mon, you figure everyone starts at at least 80% correct in the pick 'em. The vast majority of FCS games are very predictable as far as W/L. Calling the spread is far more difficult.

The problem people run into with the spread is when they think it's what Vegas (or whatever house) thinks will be the actual outcome of the game. You always need to remind yourself that the spread is the point where Vegas thinks equal money will be bet on each team.
I don't mind the spread but it really is in my opinion much more lucky. Sure there is some knowledge to it but when some one is favored by a point, you pick them and they win by three. What's more important the two additional points or that they won. Even worse is when someone is favored by 25 you pick them and they win by 24.

Either way, since it isn't for money. I enjoy playing both.

And picking on the spread comes down to guessing on whether SIU will beat Illinois State by 16 or 17. It's a coin toss on the points.

Nuh-uh...if you watch the week before you'll note that SIU's placekicker had a slight pull late in the game, so it's only logical to conclude that this week's game, being a week later, he will pull a bit more at the end of the game since he's more fatigued. So, it's obvious that he'll shank the EP on the garbage time touchdown. Duh.

mcveyrl,
You are now approved. You should get an email to that effect.
I generally wait at least 24 hours before approving accounts, and then it's whenever I can get to it. You wouldn't beleive how much it cuts down on spam.

Hey JohnStOnge... you STILL are ducking me on the computer picks vs humans.

I'm 121-38 (.761) picking games. How are your computers doing?

BTW, thanks for the heads up 93. :thumb:

We're neck and neck in the pick'em and I didn't want to win on a technicality. :D

So I know I haven't picked every week and shouldn't complain, but how are some of the guys leading that have only picked one week (cough, cough danefan)? I don't think I understand the scoring system.

NM, looks like it's winning percentage...

Yup, something I've asked Rock to try to fix every year. I think total wins is far more important.

Exactly, although it's boosting my standing in the Spread Pool. BTW, I would be up $1500 if I were to wager $100 on every game in the spread pool. 93 would probably be way up there. He's played every week and has a higher winning percentage than me.

It's that kind of thinking that usually drives a man to financial ruin...

It would be interesting to see if you chose differently if you did put $100 on each game. :|

When I was stationed in SoCal, I'd head up to Caesars and throw a couple hundred on the sports book now and again during NFL seasons. If you do that enough, you will quickly come to the realization that:

1. Vegas oddsmakers are the smartest people in the world.
or
2. Vegas oddsmakers are clairvoyant
or
3. The NFL is fixed

I'm not sure which I believe.

I'm not sure if anyone noticed, but the same guy won both the pick 'em and spread pools this year in the Go Hens Top 25 pool. Not bad.

So by 89Hen's criteria, that fellow must be good and lucky.

On a side note, bluehenbillk was breathing down my neck in both pools, and you were right there in the pick 'em until the end. That was a heckuva race. :notworthy:
