UTEP Transfer QB leaves TXST

Post by CatMom »

RS Freshman had transferred to TXST after sitting out 2009 @ UTEP. He was in the mix of "who wiil be the next QB for TXST after losing George?" We were liking what we saw but 1 week into practice we find he has left the team. No real info on it, just a twitter statement from the SMDR sports reporter who is at everything TXST does and is there today for the scrimmage. (I didn't go.... )
I'll post whatever else I can find out from Mayforth, later.
So this leaves us with Hawkins, Hill and Arndt (who I still think needs to redshirt)

BIO:
Position: Quarterback
Height: 6-2
Weight: 200
Class: Sophomore
Hometown: The Woodlands, Texas
High School: The Woodlands

College
Sat out the 2009 season as a redshirt at UTEP.

Ranked the no. 49 pro-style quarterback and a three-star prospect by Rivals.com ... rated the no. 40 QB by Scouts, Inc ... selected the District 14-5A Offensive MVP after leading his team to a 9-2 record and the district championship as a senior ...named MVP on the All-Montgomery County squad ... completed 91-of-168 passes for 1,688 yards, 18 TD’s and only eight interceptions, in 2008 ... led the district in passing ... also rushed 63 times for 408 yards with four long TD runs (77 yards, 45 yards, 44 yards and 30 yards) ... had seven games with at least two TD passes, including three in wins over Clear Lake and Oak Ridge ... passed for a career-high 254 yards and two TD’s in 42-17 victory over College Park ... helped his team knock off Spring Westfield, 24-6, in the bi-district playoffs ... invited to play in the Space City Classic postseason event ... selected as his team’s player of the week on four occasions.

Damn Bobcats sure have some bad luck with QB's that can't make a long-term comittment.

I'm sure he realized how tight the QB race was and wanted out. Arndt seems like the future anyway.

That's the thing. You are going to a program that already has QB's in the pipeline. You expect a QB or 2 are going to be recruited because a team always needs someone (or 2) in the wings. You can't always expect to walk onto a campus and be #1.
Hawkins has bidded his time. He redshirted and then only got 9 passes last season but he's out there working his butt off (as he did in the off season) to be in a position to claim the job. (which it looks more and more like he will). He could have quit after his RS year but he's still here and doing what it takes.
Someone will have to eventually take his place (if he is, indeed, our new starter).

I imagine it's either an ego issue or grades.

yes...he's originally from Delaware, I think. I catch most of his tweets on his blog.

FWIW - Coach Wright said that McCloud just didn't want to play football anymore

This is actually good news.

I am happy to see that our coaching staff has outed the weak-links in the program. So far we've lost 1 QB who (IMO) didn't want to put in the work to compete for the starting position and now we've just lost another who doesn't even want to play football anymore at all.

Would MUCH rather have this kind of stuff come out during early August with no real consequences than have players on the team putting in half-efforts or bringing bad blood into the locker room once the season starts.
Sincerely,
MaximumBobcat

Max,

I have to agree with you there. Besides, we aren't really "down" to 4 QB's. We still have 4 QB's on the roster. Plus, several other guys were QB's in HS, if it really came to that. I could see McV on some wildcat option play. Throwing another lefty (former) QB in as a FB throwing a pass.(not fully out of practice as he pitches on the baseball team) We have those weapons we didn't have 5-6 years ago.
