Derrek Lee Traded To Braves

Post by 89Hen »

The Chicago Cubs traded first baseman Derrek Lee to the Atlanta Braves for three pitching prospects, the team announced Wednesday.

"It just felt right," Lee said. "The main thing is we have six weeks left and Atlanta is in first place, and they're playing great baseball.
OK. There IS a trade deadline in MLB... isn't there?? :| :|

Aug 31 for a player to be post-season eligible.

And for the Cubs to be able to trade him to the Braves implies he cleared waivers.

What I don't understand is THIS: They Braves HAD Adam LaRoche, who's playing MUCH better baseball than Derek Lee, more HR, more RBI, higher BA, OBP, SLG, and has ALSO cleared waivers for the Diamondbacks....

Something tells me the Bravos just don't want to admit they were wrong on LaRoche.

July 31 = direct trade deadline
Aug 31 = player must clear waivers before being dealt

I'll look up the details and get back, but in short, if someone wanted to disrupt the Lee deal, they could, but they have to go through with it or face certain ramifications. For instance, the Phils couldn't just claim Lee to cockblock the Braves.

Again, where's Gannonfan when you need him?

Who exactly is 'someone'? Does it have to be someone from the two teams in question? Or can it be any team that could object to the trade?

Here's a start: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_Leag ... ansactions

I'm still looking for a good layman's explanation article.

EDIT - Here's another good article: http://assets.espn.go.com/mlb/s/transan ... rimer.html

Basically, when you put a guy on waivers, other teams have three days to make a waiver claim. If they do so they have to take on his contract. If multiple clubs make a claim, assignment is as follows:
If the club doesn't withdraw the waiver request, the player's contract is assigned in the following manner:

(A) If only one claim is entered, the player's contract is assigned to that claiming club.

(B) If more than one club in the same league makes claims, the club currently lower in the standings gets the player.

(C) If clubs in both leagues claim the player, preference shall always go to the club in the same league as the club requesting waivers.

Yeah, nice conspiracy theory.

Adam Laroche is not the player that Derek Lee is. Also, Derek Lee is a fantastic first baseman.

Atlanta has already gone through two different stints with Laroche. Why would they aquire him for a third time? :?

I could be wrong but wouldn't the parties have to agree on who the DBacks would get back for LaRoche? Maybe DBacks were asking for too much.

See - you didn't need me. You just need the old reliable friends known as Google and Wiki. Seriously, the world is getting to be more and more like the Matrix everyday - don't know Kung -Fu? Google it. Granted, you may not be able to beat Morpheus after digesting the information, but neither could Neo. :thumb:

Yes, Lee cleared waivers - he's not that good, he's got a big contract, and he's injured. The Braves are rolling the dice because they are 2.5 up on the hard charging Phils and this is Bobby Cox's last year. They want to win this year and with Chipper down and Glaus showing his age, they need something.

I'm almost positive they'd have taken what the braves gave the cubbies.
As for the minor leaguers heading to Chicago, Baseball America ranked Lopez 16th among Braves prospects before the season and suggested that he "may be the biggest sleeper in the [Atlanta] system." He's still just 19, but his numbers in A ball haven't been as impressive as the ones he posted in his Rookie ball debut last year. Lopez has a 4.37 ERA with 6.8 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9 so far in 2010.

Harris, 23, has played at three levels this season and has now reached AA. Overall, the reliever has a 2.90 ERA with 10.9 K/9 and 4.0 BB/9. Lorick, also a reliever, has yet to reach AA, but the 22-year-old has solid numbers so far in 2010: a 2.24 ERA with 7.4 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9.

Career stats-

Lee-- .282 AVG, .367 OBP, 995 RBI, .865 OPS, 309 HR

LaDouche-- .274 AVG, .343 OBP, 546 RBI, .835 OPS, 157 HR

Oh who really gives a rats ass what he's done in his CAREER. I'm talking about NOW.

THIS YEAR:

Lee ------- 475 PA, .251 AVE, .335 OBP, .416 SLG, 16 HR, 56 RBI, 1 SB, .751 OPS
LaRoche-- 464 PA, .275 AVE, .343 OBP, .498 SLG, 21 HR, 77 RBI, 0 SB, .840 OPS

If they had traded for the Derrek Lee of 5 years ago they wouldn't have gotten him for 3 average minor leaguers.

Besides, dumbass, Derrek Lee has over TWICE AS MANY CAREER PLATE APPEARANCES AS ADAM LAROCHE (7335 to 3694), so when you factor THAT into your pea brain, you might get over your man crush and realize LaRoche is a better ball player....he just doesn't happen to play in Chicago.

Lee's dad managed our local summer college wooden-bat league teams 2008-09. Really nice guy who knows a lot about baseball.

Yes, they could have. The Phillies pick before Atlanta in the waiver order (the order is determined by the standings with the worst teams picking first).

The problem is, that if the Phillies pick Lee and the Cubs let him go the Phillies are stuck with him - and his contract.

When a player is placed on waivers and a team picks him one of three things can happen:

1 The team that owns his rights can let him go, in which case the selecting team gets him.

2 The team that owns his rights can work out a trade with the selecting team.

3 The team that owns his rights can pull him back off waivers.

It will get very interesting in a few days when the Dodgers place Manny Ramirez on waivers (the Dodgers can't put him on waivers while he's hurt). The Red Sox may be forced to pick him just so the Rays don't get him. Manny and the Red Sox didn't exactly part amicably.

Your spot on. Not sure about this move for the Bravos. Hell, even if they do make the playoffs they'll trade in their bats for tooth picks like they always do. Atlanta just can't hit come playoff time.

And it's only a hard deadline from the standpoint that any player acquired AFTER 8/31 isn't eligible for postseason play. Typically the only moves made after 8/31 are for 4th/5th pitchers who wouldn't be used in the post-season anyway.
