Obama Administration Continues Reducing Privacy

Post by Col Hogan »

Change We Can Not Accept...

For someone who campaigned against the Bush Administrations excesses like the Patriot Act, the Obama Administration has simply continued and expanded these excesses...

Example #1
Full-Body Scan Technology Deployed In Street-Roving Vans
By ANDY GREENBERG

As the privacy controversy around full-body security scans begins to simmer, it’s worth noting that courthouses and airport security checkpoints aren’t the only places where backscatter x-ray vision is being deployed. The same technology, capable of seeing through clothes and walls, has also been rolling out on U.S. streets.

American Science & Engineering, a company based in Billerica, Massachusetts, has sold U.S. and foreign government agencies more than 500 backscatter x-ray scanners mounted in vans that can be driven past neighboring vehicles to see their contents, Joe Reiss, a vice president of marketing at the company told me in an interview. While the biggest buyer of AS&E’s machines over the last seven years has been the Department of Defense operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, Reiss says law enforcement agencies have also deployed the vans to search for vehicle-based bombs in the U.S.

That's right...those controversial full-body scan machines in use at airports are now van-mounted and rolling the streets of this country...

Example #2
Law enforcement officers may secretly place a GPS device on a person's car without seeking a warrant from a judge, according to a recent federal appeals court ruling in California.

That's right...no warrant needed...not even probable cause... simple attach it and monitor your activities...

The slippery slope is getting steeper and slipperier... :ohno: :ohno: :ohno:

You're late, colonel. At least a decade. Anybody who thinks there is any privacy left in this country is bat-shit crazy. As long as any government has the means to spy on it's citizens they will, regardless of what any bullshit like the Constitution says. It's the nature of authority to spy on and oppress it's citizens, it is here to stay forever, and there isn't a damn thing anybody can do about it.

Apparently jelly and houndawg don't agree with you... :coffee:

dawg...I am usually optimistic...I guess I believed some privacy and rights still exist...but the more I read, the more I think you are closer to the truth than I want to accept...

And it is not a CONK/DONK thing...it's the poison of power that gets to each administration...no matter the party...

I was dumb enough to think Obama really would push back some of the abuses Bush instituted...but now I realize he is as drunk with the power the Patriot Act gives the president as Bush was... :ohno:

I still hope there is a fix...but I'm doubting it...

Not sure why people are upset about this. WTF do I care that the US Government can take x-rays of my body, car, or house? I have nothing to hide.

No big deal to me, but if it helps catch the bad guys, then I am all for it. :thumb:

Amen........hopefully, they will install more cameras everywhere too. Maybe we can catch some of the vandals and taggers (graffiti) that are blighting this country.

I used to be optimistic too, that's why I voted for change. Before the election I thought that Obama would push back on some of his predecessor's more egregious violations of our civil rights, but I was worried about foreign policy. I'm not thrilled with foreign policy these days but I think he's done a decent job considering the total fubar he inherited, but I couldn't be more disappointed with his performance with respect to our civil liberties.

The upshot is that W was right: The Constitution is just a goddamned piece of paper.

Yup. I undergo 10-12 thorough background checks each year...the only think that might lead to my downfall would be my desire for voters to toss out incumbents.

Hell, if they had been posting x-rays of me when I was in high school and college, I might have gotten even more dates.
