Re: FCS Players Getting Cut
My understanding (I could be wrong) is that practice squads aren't selected until after the final rosters are announced so many of these guys still have a chance at the practice squads. Released this early means they may not be selected for practice squads either...

Re: FCS Players Getting Cut
Usually a player released this early is not put on a practice squad unless another team wants them. Teams are releasing players they don't expect to keep around at this point. Remember this is just five players for most teams with the next cut being the one where tough decisions are made because they will have to waive around 20.SpeedkingATL wrote:My understanding (I could be wrong) is that practice squads aren't selected until after the final rosters are announced so many of these guys still have a chance at the practice squads. I'm not sure why he decided to go there. Hopefully he gets picked up by another team. I read somewhere that he was waived and the reason was lack of top end speed

To be honest on Hudgins he was not very fast, quick, or sudden you have to have that to play in the NFL. I think he will get another shot somewhere but he is likely going to end up in the UFL or on someone's practice squad if a player goes down with an injury. Hudgins was a great FCS player but I look at big games and to be honest against teams with NFL caliber DBs he struggled. Look at Wake Forest where most of his numbers came against backups or App State where they held him in check for three quarters until a backup was on the field and they called off the dogs and he had some big gains in the 4th quarter. Hudgins was handled well by Cortez Gilbert who didn't even get in a camp. I really think he needs to go to the UFL and work on his game for a year or two and then attempt to return to the NFL.JConnolly wrote:AppStateAlumQC wrote:I know Dallas is pretty set in the receiving corps but I thought Hudgins would at least make the practice squad.

It is a shame for Dexter, the kid could fly. I never did understand why the Panthers didn't give him a shot at returning. From what I remember he had some issues with his hamstring that all but ended his chances with Tampa prior to being cut there. No matter what he had a hell of a career at Appalachian.happyappy99 wrote:Shame about Dexter. The big criticism on him was that he shied away from the NFL caliber hits - at least when he was with Tampa last year. He was getting praise during training camp this year for his catches though.SmallCollegeFBFan wrote:Former App State WR Dexter Jackson was waived by Carolina today. No shock though. His playing time had gone down and he never has shown he could play receiver. Part of this was the fault of Carolina as they didn't give him a shot as a return man but put him at receiver where he has never really proven he could make plays. I would suspect he might get one more shot but it looks like his career will be over within a year unless he improves.
SC State WR Oliver Young was waived by Carolina. No shock when you look at how much he played but Young is a player who could possibly rebound and make it back in the NFL with a year or two in the UFL as he continues to develop.

On a lighter note I did yell lots of encouragement to that punter from the 2nd row of Wa-Griz several years ago.
Of course I was drunk and realized towards the end of the game that I was actually yelling at the place kicker the whole time

Hudgins needs to go ahead and go to the Arena League... his skill set reminds me of former Orlando Predator Barry Wagner, who might very well be the best player in the history of arena ball.SmallCollegeFBFan wrote:To be honest on Hudgins he was not very fast, quick, or sudden you have to have that to play in the NFL. Nick Schommer from NDSU had several severe f#ck ups tonight against the Saints. Probably hurt his chances pretty bad

Too bad on Hudgins. Noticed his great numbers but never saw him play.
Everyone should know that he is a great kid, very nice, very friendly and humble. I met him in Chatty in December, at the Marriott. My then 12 year old son spotted him in the hotel lobby (not quite knowing who he was), went over to him, and started talking to him. He was immediately friendly and nice. I also talked to him multiple times, sometimes for 20 minutes at a time, over two days. He played football/catch with my son and a buddy, even going outside to play with the kids after he spotted them throwing a football outside on the second day. He introduced us to Armanti Edwards, even though he easily could have just gotten up from the couch and left us after he (and we) spotted Armanti coming into the hotel. I think my son and he are still Facebook friends.
Good luck to TH.

In the NFL no doubt as Warner is a HOF IMO, but not in the Arena League... Wagner is in a class of his own as the greatest Ironman in the history of the league.Screamin_Eagle174 wrote:Besides a guy named Kurt Warner.blueballs wrote:

Re: FCS Players Getting Cut
EWU TE Nate Overbay was cut by the Broncos yesterday.
As for Nichols, part of the reason he was cut so early was due to injuries on the Dallas line. He had a really good camp, they needed to make room. McGee started the last preseason game and played very well so they are happy with him. Matt could still end up on the practice squad though since Dallas tends to carry a total of 4 QB's including one on the practice squad.

JMU PFA OG Dorian Brooks was cut by the Steelers Fri. As far as I know, draftees Moats (Bills), Scotty McGee (Jags), and Mike Caussin (PFA TE Jags) have survived so far.

Caussin was actually cut yesterday, but signed to the practice squad
