Liberty and Richmond to start series
Liberty and Richmond to start series
Coach Rocco was on the radio this morning and said Liberty and Richmond have agreed to start a series with each other in the not too distant future. Any word on when this series will start and if its for 2 or 4 games? I'm guessing it will start once our series with JMU is over (2012).

It'd be even better if we had JMU AND Richmond IMO. That's just 1 more game I can go to every year Just replace Savannah St or some easy W with Richmond
Re: Liberty and Richmond to start series
I agree but this is not for next year, and we have JMU on the schedule for 2 years after this year. So, this series could be starting in 2012 where we'd play both JMU and Richmond for one year. Hopefully after the JMU series concludes we can add someone else within driving distance like W&M or Towson.kuntryboimike wrote:It'd be even better if we had JMU AND Richmond IMO. Is this the final piece of the puzzle that get's Gardner Webb and LU the invite to join the CAA?

Split the thing into two divisions and play the Championship Game in Boiling Springs.State Line Liquors wrote:Is this the final piece of the puzzle that get's Gardner Webb and LU the invite to join the CAA?

This inevitably leads to the question of whether or not Boiling Springs has the infrastructure to support the CAA championship game they'd be hosting. Maybe we need a GW fan to chime in here. Is there a motel, or a Golden Corral, or a Cici's Pizza in Boiling Springs that could feed and house the visitors?PenthouseClosedEnd wrote:Split the thing into two divisions and play the Championship Game in Boiling Springs.State Line Liquors wrote:Is this the final piece of the puzzle that get's Gardner Webb and LU the invite to join the CAA?

Re: Liberty and Richmond to start series
That would be an odd pair for the CAA - GW is pretty tiny compared to the state schools currently in the CAA. And LU most likely has plans for FBS, not just a better FCS conference. And with current and future members in the CAA, that would give the CAA football 14 teams (and give basketball the same number). Unless we know for certain people are leaving (and URI would be the most certain right now) I'm not sure we're in expansion mode yet.State Line Liquors wrote:Is this the final piece of the puzzle that get's Gardner Webb and LU the invite to join the CAA?

I know it is still relatively early, Gannonfan, but you should know State Line's sense of humor by now.
We have tried to schedule the Spiders for a long time. It is fantastic it appears we are finally going to make this happen.

my wife lives in that area and so ive been down there a lot. there's PLENTY of restaurants hotels within 15-45 minutes from GW. I think the problem would be parking. It's already a small campus as it is and trying to find a parking space on a busy day is a little ridiculous.State Line Liquors wrote:This inevitably leads to the question of whether or not Boiling Springs has the infrastructure to support the CAA championship game they'd be hosting. I'd like to renew our series. I love to hate you guys.
Unfortunately, I've heard rumblings that Towson is going to go the route of playing two FBS teams each year.

Re: Liberty and Richmond to start series
Do you think that one of the contractual contingencies of GW getting the invite from the CAA might be that they'd need to make some allowances for additional parking on campus? Maybe they'd get some contractual concession from the CAA to build a parking deck or something?kuntryboimike wrote:my wife lives in that area and so ive been down there a lot. there's PLENTY of restaurants hotels within 15-45 minutes from GW. If the CAA were to have their championship game in Boiling Springs, we'd definitely want parking nearby the stadium for that carnival atmosphere they're known so well for.

I have actually seen the plans. They know they have a parking problem. They plan on bussing fans into the Stadium/Carnival from nearby Valley Falls, Inman and Mayo.State Line Liquors wrote: Do you think that one of the contractual contingencies of GW getting the invite from the CAA might be that they'd need to make some allowances for additional parking on campus? Now we're talking. A school with a plan in place, a desire to take their football program to the next level, and a tradition of winning at whatever level they play at. Now, is there a way we can get the wheels of change in motion a bit faster and get those Runnin' Bulldogs on the regular CAA schedule?PenthouseClosedEnd wrote:I have actually seen the plans. And a traffic light.
And maybe one tooth, combined.
Re: Liberty and Richmond to start series
Kinda related, yesterday somebody asked Rich Radford (writer from the Virginia Pilot who covers ODU) during a live chat, "Is an ODU vs. Liberty game been discussed?"
His answer, "I do not see ODU ever playing Liberty."
I asked a follow up question asking for a specific reason why he thinks that 'cause it struck me as odd, but he didn't answer. Radford is pretty close with the ODU football program and Coach Wilder...

Oh well. We've scheduled each other in other sports (At least baseball, we've played in WBB and MBB but they weren't our choice in either case.). I don't see why this would be an issue with football, but it's up to your guys.∞∞∞ wrote:Kinda related, yesterday somebody asked Rich Radford (writer from the Virginia Pilot who covers ODU) during a live chat, "Is an ODU vs. Liberty game been discussed?"

Re: Liberty and Richmond to start series
I think Liberty needs to continue trying to get games against JMU,Richmond,William & Mary etc. to take the program to the next level. These games would be a win/win for both schools as evidenced by the turnout at the Liberty/JMU game last year in Lynchburg and the fact that the return matchup in Harrisonburg has already been sold out. As long as Liberty continues to put a winning team out on the field, it will make these matchups a reality.

I heard the same thing about Richmond a couple of years ago.∞∞∞ wrote:Kinda related, yesterday somebody asked Rich Radford (writer from the Virginia Pilot who covers ODU) during a live chat, "Is an ODU vs. Liberty game been discussed?"

It's all about the administration. There was a contract on the table two years ago but it wouldn't be signed by the ODU people.∞∞∞ wrote:Kinda related, yesterday somebody asked Rich Radford (writer from the Virginia Pilot who covers ODU) during a live chat, "Is an ODU vs. Liberty game been discussed?"

As for Richmond, I was completely shocked when I heard about this because of their previous stance against us. The series starts in 2013.

Re: Liberty and Richmond to start series
If ODU doesn't want to play us for now, I'm fine with that. But I want ongoing series with W&M, JMU, and Richmond. We need these games to continue program growth. Hate to say it, but for now ODU is not necessary for that.
