BCS Schools one step closer to leaving NCAA

Post by bluehenbillk »

NCAA ruled former Oregon and "current" Ole Miss QB Jeremiah Masoli ineligible for 2010. Other than for moral reasons, they have nothing. Ole Miss is obviously appealing, we'll stay tuned.

Don't F with S-E-C football.

Your conclusion and that facts don't add up. Masoli is a blip on the radar.

CFL I guess is the only place where he can go now. Or retire now. :ohno:
All the Ivy League needs to become relevant again is to diversify its OOC schedule.

I don't know if this has been verified, but I've heard that Masoli may be eligible for 2011.

And even if he's not, what's to keep him from getting an NFL tryout? There will be plenty of teams looking for depth this week....

Too late for the supplimental draft. Plus, Masoli is not a NFL caliber QB.

The guy has multiple suspension/LAW violations. Gets kicked off of Oregon. Trys to bend the rules to get a transfer waiver at the last minute. The NCAA rightfully told him to take a hike.

He would fit in perfectly at Montana, though.

Jon: Why would he require the supplemental? Why couldn't he just sign a free agent contract?

The way I understand it, under the supplemental route, a team would sacrifice a specific pick from NEXT year's draft, and the guy would probably command a commensurate salary. A free agent contract, on the other hand, would probably be more to the team's liking, since they could get away with league rookie minimum and if it didn't work out, they could cut him with minimum fuss. Give him a chance, and if it doesn't work out, so what?

What's not to like about that?

Why couldn't he sign as a free agent without having to go through all of that? Does one have to declare themself eligible for the draft to be eligible for free agency?

In terms of him being in trouble...he fits in with 95% of the NFL, that won't be a problem there

Yes, he has to declare for the draft. The NFL does not allow for this circumstance. Otherwise, you would have players bypassing the draft, and becoming free agents, which destroys the meaning of the draft.

The NFL could have another supplimental draft, but he can not just become a free agent

True. Otherwise every player can just declare himself eligible for free agency and go to the highest bidder. Completely ruins the entire reason for having a draft.

Masoli will be eligible to play next year. He asked for a transfer waiver and was denied. He was asking for an exception and got denied--that is all.

Also even if BCS conferences move away from the NCAA I doubt they would allow such transfer rules to exist. Otherwise every player who feels they are being somewhat slighted can pick up and leave. Coaches dont want that, programs dont want that.

This.

Even if the big boys bolted the NCAA, they would still have a governing body with rules. Some rules would be different, but you can bet transfer rules would be as strict, or stricter among BCS schools than now.

I think your wrong about that. You *WILL* see Masoli in the NFL. Hes not tall bout hes a tough. 2nd or 3rd string wildcat qb for sure.

You guys are forgetting about the mockery that has become of the first pick. Teams practically sign the dude before the draft so they don't have the embarrassement of drafting a Smell-Way or a Manning and then having to trade him late or lose him because he waits until they lose his rights at the next draft. What's to stop a team from SAYING the guy they just signed is gong to be the first pick and then pick someone else? The cap might have something to say about that, but just the possibility of it happening to me would be enough to allow a guy to declare free-agency after the draft in a Masoli-type situation.
