Does Charity Begin At Home? USNS Comfort

Post by Cap'n Cat »

I've watched a couple episodes on the Military Channel of At Sea, all about our Navy's capabilities and such. I am very impressed with our navy, believe it or not, especially in their policing of piracy and in their humanitarian efforts. I think it's wonderful how we are actually helping people and not killing them.

One show chronicled, in part, the activities of the USNS Comfort of the Fourth Fleet in the Caribbean. In particular, the hospital ship docked in Panama and took on hundreds of sick people there and treated them for various maladies. One woman that she was pregnant, but had been so for more than a year. An ultrsound revealed, however, that she had a large cyst in her ovaries the size of a basketball. The navy medical team operated and removed the growth and she was all better. That's good.

Regardless of the fact that they are helping these folks, I sat wondering whether they do this for Americans, too. I mean, heck, if they pulled up in Savannah or Miami or New Orleans or Baltimore or Galveston or even New York, would there not be thousands of our citizens who could benefit from their largesse and tax dollars spent?

Again, I have nothing against treating foreigners, I think it's great public relations, but I'm sure some folks in the South could use some medical care on the government dime.

This link has some good info re: their mission. Apparently they did pull up in New Orleans after Katrina.

This is one ship. There are over 1200 free clinics in the US. Just sayin.

This USSComfort has pulled up in Baltimore several times before. That ship is HUGE! I think I've read our air craft carriers show up in disasters world wide for the exsact same reasons. Like when the tsunami hit a few years back.
"Elaine, you're from Baltimore, right?"
"Yes, well, Towson actually."

Yeah, that's a good point, Hen. Now let me ask you - from a Conservative perspective, how are you with you tax money being spent of foreigners' medical care on US hospital ships?

I'm OK with it, as long as most people at home are taken care of. It's in our best interest, as humans and as a country.

While stationed aboard the USS California during Operation Desert Storm, many of my shipmates (we were in drydock) crossdecked to the USNS Comfort and served several months in the Persian Gulf. They said it was one of the best experiences they had in while in the Navy. One buddy called it the "love boat" (because of the propensity for "hookups" between the multitude of female officers/enlisted onboard.

Unfortunately I was a newbie and not a qualified SWO, so was unable to take advantage of the opportunity. :ohno: :ohno: :ohno:

Well, when my wife visited me on my duty nights, we just went to my stateroom. My roommate was on a different watch rotation and thus we never were there at the same time. :thumb:

I would imagine those folks had great imaginations....lots of fan rooms, emtpy voids, vacant storerooms, etc.

I hear casual physical encounters are frowned upon by the brass. Is that true? Fvck, if I was a female Lieutenant or Commander, I'd be down in the hole, taking it UP my hole every night!!

Are officer and enlisted trysts common?

They are a court-martialable offense. :coffee: :coffee: "Conduct unbecoming..." and all that crap.

so then you're ok with tax dollars being spent on medical care coverage here for those that have none

Not necessarily. There are those don't have and those that choose not to have. HUGE difference IMO.

Ya know, Brother Hen, Cap'n Cat can buy that argument...to a certain extent. Often, choice is bound by other circumstances - kids, underemployment, spending money on cigarettes and beer, etc.

people, most people, are not destitute, un-employed, under employed, etc etc because they choose to be

i do, however, understand the need of the conservative to rationalize and justify failure to reach out to those in need

easier than admitting being greedy, selfish, or that you just don't care about anybody but yerself

Sometimes good reasons, but very often not. There are too many people that believe 50" 3-D TV's and big SUV's are a right and not a luxury.
