For Red Sox, Playoff Math Simple, But Difficult
For the Boston Red Sox to make the playoffs the math is extremely simple... Sweep the remaining six games vs New York and then win 1 more of their remaining games then the Yankees do.
Now getting to that conclusion is difficult, unlikely and should it manage to happen, one set of fans will be ecstatic while the other would be quite pissed off.. oh and Mitch Williams would look like a genius.
For Boston each of the 10 games remaining not vs New York are very winnable... though for the 2010 Red Sox very winnable doesn't always mean much.
For New York its a mixture of winnable (vs Baltimore, Toronto), and not so winnable ( 4 vs Tampa Bay).
I don't hold any illusions that Boston still has a good shot at the playoffs, but its not entirely impossible that they could pull it off.
And For Boston the rotation couldn't line up any more perfect. Lester, Beckett and Buchholz are on target for the first NY series, and Terry Francona would be wise to slot in Wakefield and a combination of their top minor league guys currently on the expanded roster for the Chi Sox series and have Lester, Beckett and Buchholz available again for the second NY series on a little extra rest.

6 games out of the wild card with 2 weeks to go. It would require a Mets like meltdown by the Yankees or Rays for you to make the playoffsUNHWildCats wrote:You know what would be great? 6 games head t head with NYY sweep those and there even... play 1 better then NY in remaining 10 and there in,.... impossible? no... unlikely? yes.clenz wrote:6 games out of the wild card with 2 weeks to go. BTW Yankees in last 10 are 2-8 so very well could be in the midst of a Mets like meltdown
Re: For Red Sox, Playoff Math Simple, But Difficult
Not gonna happen. Even if it does, you have to play at Target Field....good luck with that. The Twins rape at home.
Re: For Red Sox, Playoff Math Simple, But Difficult
The O's are 25-15 in their last 40 after a sweep of the Blue Jays. 1-2 against Boston and 2-1 against NY. Not really sure what this means exactly, except that the O's are the complete pushovers like they were in the first 4 months of the season.

Another Red Sox thread. Great.
Might as well start them now because their season is over in 2.5 weeks.

For the Sox all that's keeping them from daily tee times on a golf course far from Boston are two weeks of baseball. There's no chance that anyone has to reschedule those tee times.

Maybe the Sox should have worried about the Blue Jay's (1-2) & O's (0-2, game 3 tonight) before worrying about taking all 6 from the Yankees...

The Yankees clinch a tie for the Wild Card as they win 4-3 in 10 innings.
The Red Sox scored 2 in the 9th to take a 3-2 lead, but couldn't hold the lead.

For a team that had no business being in the race in early August let alone now, they sure did manage to give their fans a fun September.BlueHen86 wrote:The Yankees clinch a tie for the Wild Card as they win 4-3 in 10 innings.

It's somewhat like watching yourself bleed out after being gut-shot. You KNOW you're going to die, it's only a matter of when. For the Diamondbacks, it was around mid-July. For the Red Sox, it was mid-late September. Not much difference.

At least the Diamondbacks didn't lead their fan base on all season long with false hope only to let them down the last 2 weeks of the season.AZGrizFan wrote:UNHWildCats wrote: For a team that had no business being in the race in early August let alone now, they sure did manage to give their fans a fun September.![]()

If my team is going to suck i want to know it from the start. I'm a fan of winners, and when my teams are going to suck I want to know right away so I can lay off of the boasting.
I follow:
Detroit Red Wings
UNI
Michigan
Minnesota Vikings
Minnesota Twins
I've been toyed with my entire life in terms of getting so close only to have my team go "HA! FOOLED YOU!" I want to know from the start if we are going to suck or not. Michigan starting 4-0 last year only to finish 5-7 was impossible to live with...if it happens again this year, well, I don't know what I'll do.

Twins now have 6 division titles in the last 9 years, and no playoff series wins
Vikings, well we all know about them
Michigan - only 1 national title since 1950 and Lloyd was great at having a ton of talent and having big let downs
UNI - See Minnesota Vikings
