1. The new coaching staff is a breath of fresh air. The change was long overdue for a program with YSU's past reputation. But they are still NEW and need a few more years of recruiting under their belt.
2. YSU has a freshman QB. There have only been 2-True-Frosh QB's to ever lead a team to a National Title and win (Bernie Kosar and Armanti Edwards) and while the QB is a good game manager, he is not yet surrounded by enough talent to bring home a title. Not sure if the QB is a redshirt or true-frosh, but he is inexperienced.
3. The Penguins have done well in recruiting excellent RB's and Receivers, but the depth on the OL is suspect and will really show as the season wears on.
4. The starting DL is good, but again depth issues. LB's are a big question mark.

By the end of next season, I see YSU being a contender, and I think that they will make great strides this year. We will all know how good they size up in the big picture after the game with SIU this weekend. This is the measuring stick.

The Salukis have closed practice this week, I think we'll see a better effort against YSU

I do not know of many teams in Division 1 college football that are 5 deep at running. Our staff opted NOT to redshirt any of them this year, which means we have 5 running backs to choose from. Right now Cook, Bellamy, and Thompson are leading the way for the Penguins.
Why would you not hold one or two back (or at least try)? Are you going to run the Wild-bird with all five in the backfield at the same time?

What is the thought process on this?

The one is a sophomore, one was redshirted last year, and the other three true freshmen are just plain good. One was a Rivals 4 star, one played with 5 star Jordan Hicks at Lakota West in Cincy and was their star, and the other was a local star at Youngstown Ursuline where Wolford went to HS; he was the Division 5 Player of the Year in Ohio.

I understand they are all studs - however, only one gets to carry the rock at any given time. Allen Jones has had 6 carries so far in 3 games (actually appeared in 2). Why not have him get a year to get stronger, stagger the graduations a bit, etc?

UNI landed arguably the top recruit in the state of Iowa in Andre Dawson http://www.unipanthers.com/sports/m-foo ... dre00.html, and so far it looks like his is dressing, but being held in reserve to preserve the redshirt option.

It looks like we are taking the approach with Dawson that we did with Carlos Anderson. Dress him every game and have him ready to go if needed. However, the only time he will be needed is if 2 or 3 RB's go down.

However, wasting a redshirt for 6 carries in three games is bad coaching, unless he gets 10 carries, or more, per game the rest of the year

I have a feeling that he will get a lot of carries this week if he starts off well.

He was Wolford's first recruit at YSU. He starts on special teams. He played HS ball at Stambaugh Stadium for four years. He is a stud. He will get his carries in due time.

The line went from -7 for YSU to -5.5. Still a surprise YSU is a favorite by that many points. I figured it would be around -1 or -2, but still.

SIU went up 14-0 early, then YSU scored 31 consecutive points to go up 31-14. SIU scored two late touchdowns in the final two minutes to make it very close, 31-28, but YSU won!

Huge crowd again, playoff environment, Deiker had trouble all night. YSU IS BACK!
