#5 Delaware @ #3 JMU Game Thread

Not worthy of its own thread, but I just had a Delaware guy walk out of my office - I had to let him know that UD has a good team. He was asking if UD and ASU had played yet this season

Not beating on the Hens in particular, but I just don't get guys that don't follow it at least a LITTLE bit.....

He's probably from New Jersey and started following Rutgers when they got Ray Rice. UD football is an afterthought to a sizable percentage of our undergrad population that come from states with "big time" football.

My tailgate group has a newly married couple. She is the friend and graduated from JMU, went to law school in Charlottesville and lives there now. He went to UD and is an accountant in Charlottesville. He is a die hard Notre Dame fan! He actually can't make it to this weekend's game, but was ready to wear his purple and gold to the game. The fans that are dedicated like the ones on this board are fewer and farther between than we think. And that includes a lot of the fans in the stands.

Oddly enough, this guy also mentioned Notre Dame as his "other team".

Nevermind, just read on GoHens about the away game ticket policy UD has in place. That stinks.

Yep. Only UDAF-donating season ticket holders can purchase away game tickets. Our athletic department is doing their best to reduce the fan base.

Perspective now. AD is asking for a whopping $100/year. This debate needs it own threat and this game is important enough to skip the AD hate. GO HENS.

It's all good. Heck, we just figured that most JMU fans starting following JMU football as students somewhere around the middle of December in 2004, so unless you were in college for a long time before then, we didn't realize there was anyone within 15 years of being 45.

Delaware's offensive line has grown up and it's now paying dividends - 4 Jr's and a Sr on the line and they are clearly controlling the line of scrimmage. Throw in two good tight ends and a RB in Pierce who can do it all out of the backfield (run, catch, and most importantly, block) and it's just real tough to defend UD. I don't think Pierce gets his 100 yards this week, but I don't think it'll matter - I don't think JMU can get to Devlin this year and that just opens up a world of possibilities in the passing game.

So you think JMU will get 0 sacks against UD after 8 last yr? JMU is as good or better at 3 of the 4 DL positions plus better on the 2 deep. Does UD still have starting at OT that underweight tackle (#74?) that has gotten bitch slapped by the top de ends in the CAA the last 2 years?

Sure JMU got zero against Tyrod Taylor, but he is one of the most mobile QBs in all of college football, playing behind an o line that will be the best JMU sees all year. Mike Brown of Liberty, while not quite Tyrod Taylor escapability, is extremely difficult to corral (JMU did get numerous hits on Brown). JMU won't see another QB like those 2 again for the rest of the season, at least until the playoffs.

Umm....I went to the UR/Elon game. UR has a terrible OL right now. JMU's is not great, but it IS better then the UR line.

UD's OL did take a beating in last years JMU game, but that was also the bottom of their learning curve. The 4 Sophs started playing together after that and only gave up something like 4 sacks the rest of the season (3-games) and if my memory serves blocked great at Navy. They have really come together as a unit since that JMU mess last year.

Yup, Uhll is still starting for the Hens after being beat up by better lineman the past two years. And as typically happens with age, he's actually really good now. Funny how an offensive line that sticks togther for a few years starts playing well together. 4 Jr's and 1 Sr on the line, with a great RB and a great QB behind them all of a sudden becomes a very potent offense. I'm sure they all look forward to returning the bitch slapping this time around. I don't think JMU gets any more than 2 sacks all day, btw.

Unlike in the past two seasons UD actually has a strong running game this year and as a result JMU's DL will first have to concern themselves with stopping the run before they worry about getting to the passer. They had no such concerns in recent games vs UD. That combined with the fact that the Hen's OL is definately much improved will certainly help with pass protection.

Thorpe is still out. On crutches last week. True Freshman Jace Edwards is slated as the backup but they're trying not to use him and keep his redshirt. They did the same thing with Kavon Seaton (or Dae'quan Scott) last year when Dudzik got hurt. So yes, that's it.

It's looking more and more like Mickey intended to use Thorpe in Wildcat formations this year. Thorpe was under center for a few snaps against Morehead...but Thorpe never had an entire drive to himself. Now that Thorpe is injured, plans have obviously changed.

Before the Liberty game, they were supposedly working in WR/QB Kavon Seaton in as the Wildcat QB, but we never saw this Wildcat formation against Liberty.

But, yeah, Jace Edwards is the true freshman redshirting that they're hoping not to have to use as their backup pocket QB.
