CalPoly - playoffs?
Interesting schedule that CalPoly has this year. They are currently 3-2 and looks like they should be 9-2 or 8-3 at season's end. They already have a DII win in there with Humbolt State so that means 8-2 or 7-3 in the eyes of the committee. I think we'd all agree that 8-2 is a lock given they'd have wins over Montana and McNeese among others. However, their schedule also includes ODU and St Francis. My question is, are they a lock at 8-3 (7-3)?

They'd also have a win over USD who looks pretty good at this point.

Re: CalPoly - playoffs?
They would probably be a lock at 8-3 but a lot would depend on how many CAA, Big Sky and SoCon teams end up at 8-3. Fair or not any CAA team and just about any SoCon or Big Sky team at 8-3 will make the playoffs. I don't see how you could keep them out based on the quality wins.

Does a win USD look good? Yeah, they got an FBS win, but beyond that, they beat North Dakota. If USD loses to UNI and Cal Poly, it'll just prove USD can't beat anyone with over .500FCS Update wrote:They'd also have a win over USD who looks pretty good at this point.
Cal Poly finishing 9-2 will likely be a lock, but even then, it'll be close. 8-3 they'll need a lot of help.

Cal Poly is a lot like USD and Chattanooga to me.siuham wrote:Does a win USD look good? Yeah, they got an FBS win, but beyond that, they beat North Dakota. USD depends on how NDSU finishes and if they can beat UNI.
Chattanooga has 2 "great" losses. They really hung with App and Jax St, but if they can't win games it won't matter. The Mocs would definitely be in at 8-3 in my opinion and would look pretty good at 7-4 depending on the losses.
Re: CalPoly - playoffs?
Cal Poly will have three losses by Saturday night...
Re: CalPoly - playoffs?
The other loss would have to be a "good" loss. Can't lose to St. Francis or ODU, obviously.

Re: CalPoly - playoffs?
An 8-3 CP team could potentially have wins over Montana, McNeese and 2 teams with FBS wins (USD & Davis). I think they're a lock even if their other loss isn't a "good" loss.89Hen wrote:Interesting schedule that CalPoly has this year. Re: CalPoly - playoffs?
Just curious 'cause we're havin' a similar discussion on the ODU board concerning playoff scenarios, but would you take an 8-3 Cal Poly team that you described in the scenario above (third loss being to a 9-2 ODU team), or a 9-2 ODU team that has a win over Cal Poly and Hampton and two losses against a highly ranked W&M team and a non-scholarship, but decent Jacksonville team (they're currently 4-1)?AZGrizFan wrote:An 8-3 CP team could potentially have wins over Montana, McNeese and 2 teams with FBS wins (USD & Davis). BTW, our coach today said that ODU has a 0% chance of us making the playoffs, but it's still fun to think about.

Sorry. Right now a loss to ODU is a playoff killer for a 2 loss team. It won't always be like that, probably as soon as next year, but with the loss to Jacksonville and a close win over a limping G-W, it is.

Re: CalPoly - playoffs?
Don't read this wrong, because I REALLY like where ODU is going with their program, but it's not the CP or W&M games that would be killing you. It's the Campbells, Monmouths, Georgia States, Savannah States, VMI's and NCC's on your schedule that are killing you (BTW, I put Hampton in that group as well). Because the reality of it is this: If you lose to Cal Poly and then run the table you will end up 8-3 and will have lost to every team on your schedule with a pulse. Even WITH a win against CP, you're 1-2 against teams with a pulse. Had you beaten either Jacksonville or W&M and THEN beat CP....we'll, we'd have to talk now, wouldn't we?∞∞∞ wrote:Just curious 'cause we're havin' a similar discussion on the ODU board concerning playoff scenarios, but would you take an 8-3 Cal Poly team that you described in the scenario above (third loss being to a 9-2 ODU team), or a 9-2 ODU team that has a win over Cal Poly and Hampton and two losses against a highly ranked W&M team and a non-scholarship, but decent Jacksonville team (they're currently 4-1)?AZGrizFan wrote:An 8-3 CP team could potentially have wins over Montana, McNeese and 2 teams with FBS wins (USD & Davis). Re: CalPoly - playoffs?
Hey guys dont get ahead of ourselves for us...
Poly is 3-2 right now, the way I see it they loose a game or two more (anygame) and the playoffs hopes fade.
I think they are playing better every game; I went up to see them at Fresno State last week and was actually impressed with the heart they showed in a loss. They have a short week, one practice and then have to fly clear across the country after getting pretty physically beat up by a much bigger faster team. If we can come away with a win at ODU I will be stoked, that will be the 4th of a 5 game roadie....l hope the team takes it one week at a time right now, ODU will be a tough game. Lets talk playoffs in November.

The bolded section is why I disagree about THIS statement:

Hey AZ glad you are paying attention....I have said since the day the schedule came out that we would be ecstatic to get through that road trip at 5-2 or 4-3. Who plays 5 game (screwed that up above not 6) roads trips? Honesty, there should be an accumulated fatigue factor...

At 8-3 CalPoly is in as far as I'm concerned.

Re: CalPoly - playoffs?
There IS ECB precedent. There was one year in the late '90s when Cow Poly went 10-0 and was snubbed.
IMO, that was wrong. But it happened. It could happen again. And it would STILL be wrong....

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

CP, I was AT the Griz/CP game ON SEPT 11 and couldn't BELIEVE it when the announcer kept announcing "Join us for our NEXT home game, October 23rd against North Dakota!"CPAlum wrote: Hey AZ glad you are paying attention....I have said since the day the schedule came out that we would be ecstatic to get through that road trip at 5-2 or 4-3. I kept thinking: Surely he's missing a game in there somewhere...

I understand the distractions for CP and I'm not saying it's going to be an easy win, but I'm not sure the playoff committee will take that into consideration when it comes to comparing resumes of teams.

No kidding...... and sadly no mistake. I'm in San Diego and I didn't make it up for that game. You Griz fans are awesome, thanks for coming. I caught the Fresno game and I plan to see the Poly v UCD game. It is a 6 hour drive for me to SLO but its doable. I would love to get a game at Montana one of these days with my son...that would be fantastic.
Re: CalPoly - playoffs?
Now you know why we are so excited to be joining the Big Sky Conference. Scheduling is a b!tch when you are on the west coast and have to schedule 7 OOC games.

Re: CalPoly - playoffs?
I'll say this...if Cal-Poly goes 8-3 against that schedule, with as many road trips as they have to make, I say they're a shoe-in for the playoffs. When I took the time to absorb what they're doing schedule-wise, going 8-3, with wins over Montana and McNeese, would be very impressive in my opinion.
Re: CalPoly - playoffs?
I think Cal Poly is pretty good. But.....I'd have to wait to see how the rest of our season goes before I would say how impressive their win over us was.
