Big Sky Power Rankings 10-4
Interesting things happened within the conference last week. It is October and Montana got their first road win (actually the Grizzlies, Bobcats and Eagles all won on the road for the first time). EWU showed they can win on the road without their super back Jones. Portland State showed that they too, can destroy Idaho State. And hey, the conference never gets truly going until some scores 60 points, and loses. After all this, it is time for the conference power rankings. All are my opinion only and all are open for discussion. This week, (last week). I'll say right now, not much change.
1. Montana State (1)---After everyone left at halftime and after Sacramento State came back, the Bobcats refused to wilt in the heat and held off the Hornets in overtime. Hard fought and close was expected, but really no one had expected a game such as that. Good teams overcome adversity, especially on the road and the Bobcats showed that they were able to still win. This week, they welcome Portland State to their home confines. Home sweet home.
2. Montana (2)---In a game that was truly going to show who wanted it more (typical when you put two bears together), the Grizzlies headed on the road and took care of the upstart Northern Colorado team. Many may have thought that the Grizzlies could be upset, but they put away any notion of that early. Have they turned a corner? Is it time for the true Grizzly team to emerge? Possibly, but we might not know even this week. Idaho State comes to town and the game should not even be close. But we all thought that last year, didn't we?
3. Eastern Washington (3)---No indication in their first few games that the Eagles were anything without Jones and word quickly spread that Jones was not going to play in their game at Weber State. But the rest of the team stood up and took advantage of some costly Weber State mistakes and got an elusive win on the road. A situation that Mitchell showed just what he can do? Maybe, but they need the good fortune to continue as Northern Arizona comes calling. At least now, if Jones can't go, the Eagles know that all is not lost (might even be better).
4. Northern Arizona (4)---In between conference road games, the Jacks took on Great West foe Southern Utah in what many thought was a trap game. It nearly was, too, until the Jacks were able to rally and escape with a hard fought victory. Clearly a bit more of a fight than expected, but a win on the road is always good. This week, a return to conference play with a trip to Eastern Washington. Back to business.
5. Sacramento State (5)---Down a bunch at halftime, where most teams would fold up and start planning for the next week, the Hornets came out on a mission against Montana State, even taking a short lead by the end of the third quarter. Yet all that energy meant that nothing was left for overtime and the Hornets came out on the short end. Still a gallant effort, but they most likely wanted the win. This week, a chance for redemption as they stay home to face Northern Colorado.
6. Portland State (7)---After a lopsided loss to Pac-10 Oregon, the Vikings came in with probably the most questions of anyone as they welcomed Idaho State to their home. However many questions were answered as they totally took apart the Idaho State team. This success early has the Vikings thinking this may be a good year for them. This week, they head down the road to face a strong Montana State team. In playing at the FCS level, the Vikings have appeared sharp, but then again, they really have not faced a team quite the caliber of the one this weekend.
7. Weber State (6)---With all going on around them, the Wildcats had a chance to stay relevant as they welcomed another struggling team, Eastern Washington, to their home field. They kept moving the ball around, yet could not score, something that is extremely important in the game of football. Before they realized, they were on the short end and Eastern Washington was walking off victorious. What to do next? This week, they get a bye, a week off to regroup.
8. Northern Colorado (8)---For all going on in the conference, the Bears have one thing right, in a year that Montana seems down, make sure you take care of business, especially on your own field. Unfortunately for the Bears, Montana woke up and sent them down with a hard loss. One thing to say something, it is another thing to do it and the Bears could not get the win in this case. This weekend, a trip to Sacramento State, a team that is surely angry with what happened in their game. Can the Bears regain focus and get the win?
9. Idaho State (9)---For all that changes within the conference, there is usually one thing that remains the same. The Bengals will be in the basement. Last weekend a trip to fellow basement dweller Portland State was supposed to be at least close, but the Bengals quickly fell behind and could not keep up, managing only 3 points against a defense that allowed 69 the week before. Will things get better? Probably not this weekend as they head on the road again, but this time to Montana, a team looking to make a statement.
Where they are now...MSU alone, UM alone, EWU alone, NAU and Sac State bunched with PSU surprising close behind and WSU not all that far off, UNC a bit further off and then ISU far behind.

Sac over EWU is no upset....

Until I watched us play Montana I would have considered us the underdog in that game too.
Sac looks to be a good team, but close losses to Montana and MSU and playing EWU on the road do not make you a favorite.
Re: Big Sky Power Rankings 10-4
1a) Montana State - After last weeks debacle in the second half, where our defense fell apart or fell asleep till the end when they woke up in time to make a stop, the Cats barely claim #1 spot. Good news is that we have found a quarterback that can make plays, bad news is that once again we are battling injuries, being down starting guards, center, mlb, both defensive ends and. The Cats are used to playing down a lot of people and last weeks win was huge no matter how it came. The game against PSU who is very dangerous and probably has one the best secondaries in the Big Sky and new pistol offense should be filled with fireworks and answer the question whether the Cats were a flash in the pan or are legit threats in the Big Sky.
1b) Montana Grizzlies - The only team stopping the Griz this year even with all the turnover has been the Griz themselves. Last weeks game seems like they finally decided to play Griz football. Roper has been dead on or nearly so the last two games throwing to probably the most dangerous set of receivers in the Big Sky. Gratton, Sambrano, and Mouton??sp are all very fast and Mouton is very fast and tall. Their zone read with pass option to outside is a unique play and keeps defenses honest and assignment sound. What separates this team though is its defense. They are fast, blitz like crazy and collect sacks and interceptions like candy. Best combo of offense and defense.
2) Portland State - I have them sitting here more out of instinct of what I think that they are. It would not surprise me one bit if they rolled into MSU (after their defense was exposed last week) and came out with a win in a high scoring affair. They rolled UC Davis scoring on every possession and trounced Idaho State like they were in little league football. They probably have one of the fastest secondaries in the Big Sky and new pistol offense is taking advantage that Gerry collected over the years.
3a-c) Sac State, EWU, NAU - Sac State has to prove their passing game can be consistent, and MSU gave up 61 points, but Sac States defense gave up 64. They hit like a mack truck though. I just don't know enough about NAU to put them higher. EWU is typically very dangerous and can beat any team at any time.
4) Weber - Endzone...learn it, love it, live it. Higgins gets his team right down to the red zone time and again and somehow they turn it over before going in for the score. Lot like the Griz in stopping themselves.
5)UNC - don't like your offensive line..it is killing your qb
6) Idaho State - They play hard...just don't win very often...but they can scare a team if they are not ready for them..ie Griz..

You're scaring the crap out of me with the PSU and SAC talk. We open conference play with Montana, MSU, Weber, and NAU, have a chance to go 3-1 over that stretch and now you're telling me we can't just skate past the rest of the schedule? This conference is getting competitive.bpcats wrote:1a) Montana State - After last weeks debacle in the second half, where our defense fell apart or fell asleep till the end when they woke up in time to make a stop, the Cats barely claim #1 spot. Luckily for us we'll find out what PSU is made of when they travel to MSU this weekend, and we get Sac at home. After NAU this week, SUU is the team I'm most worried about; don't let their record fool you... they're a good team. Sac and PSU are on my radar though... if we look past them we will lose.kalm wrote:You're scaring the crap out of me with the PSU and SAC talk. I don't know how to say this without coming across as a fan, but I think it needs to be said. Our defensive numbers will be skewed by including the stats from Arizona State and Oregon. I was ready to dismiss our performance against Davis, but after watching the Idaho State game (after Duck LaMichael James rushed for 227 yards in a little over a half, we held ISU to 3 yards rushing total for the game), I think our defense is pretty darned good. Also, Kavanaugh running the pistol had me faked out a few times just watching it. I am now eager to see how we'll play the next two games.kalm wrote:You're scaring the crap out of me with the PSU and SAC talk. Screamin brought up a similar point on the EWU board in that we've played the #3, 10, and 35 ranked scoring offenses in FCS (MSU, UM, and WSU), plus a very talented DII CWU, and perhaps the best offense in all of FBS.JALMOND wrote:I don't know how to say this without coming across as a fan, but I think it needs to be said. please dont brag about quality DII's cuz there is no such thing. DII is DII though they would destroy ISU and did last yr.kalm wrote:Screamin brought up a similar point on the EWU board in that we've played the #3, 10, and 35 ranked scoring offenses in FCS (MSU, UM, and WSU), plus a very talented DII CWU, and perhaps the best offense in all of FBS.JALMOND wrote:

I agree but we have three starting OL with sprained ankles and Orms has a sprained MCL.bpcats wrote:1a) Montana State - After last weeks debacle in the second half, where our defense fell apart or fell asleep till the end when they woke up in time to make a stop, the Cats barely claim #1 spot.

Screamin brought up a similar point on the EWU board in that we've played the #3, 10, and 35 ranked scoring offenses in FCS (MSU, UM, and WSU), plus a very talented DII CWU, and perhaps the best offense in all of FBS.
If I'm a Big Sky AD, I'd have to be crazy to schedule CWU
Yes, they destroyed ISU...and beat MSU....and beat EWU....and almost beat EWU again... and took us to the last play. Let's see Weebs schedule them

I'm not so sure I agree with that. That might be true in our region, but not everywhere.weberwildcat wrote:please dont brag about quality DII's cuz there is no such thing. DII is DII though they would destroy ISU and did last yr.
While they might not win, I'd steer clear of Grand Valley State and even Carroll (which is quite comparable to D-II). Heck, I'd even give a wide berth to Mount Union, and they're D-III.
Now, that doesn't apply to much of anyone else below them, mind you. But a blanket statement like that is hardly ever true.

Seriously, as a Montanan I am as proud as anyone of what Carroll has done in the NAIA, but have you ever actually watched them play a game. They are nowhere close to an FCS team, even ISU, and CW is a far stronger team too.SuperHornet wrote:I'm not so sure I agree with that. WSU stopped scheduling DII's in 2008. Not that I love just one FCS OOC home game and 2 FBS road games each year. But I like it better than playing a non-DI.Silenoz wrote:FBS fans say the same thing about FCSweberwildcat wrote:

Playing 2 FBS schools in the same year is pretty much a sure way to schedule your way out of the play-offs. EWU did it in 2008 when they played Colorado and Texas Tech and probably would have had a good chance to make the play-offs had they only have one Big XII school on the schedule. Should only be done when your program needs the cash pay-out. Any other year, one FBS is enough.
I'm personally not a huge fan of scheduling DII's - would much rather see us playing quality FCS teams but that's becoming harder in the west. It'll be interesting to see what the average BSC non-conference schedule looks like when CPSLO and UC Davis are added onto the schedule.

Re: Big Sky Power Rankings 10-4
Not necessarily true. Sure, if you schedule a pair of B(C)$ schools, that would tend to happen. But if you schedule, say, a MAC and a Sun Belt, those would be winnable for an average-to-elite Sky/CAA team. Might not get much $$ out of it, but one would technically get "FBS credit" for the playoffs.EWURanger wrote:Playing 2 FBS schools in the same year is pretty much a sure way to schedule your way out of the play-offs.
In general, I agree with you there. But I'd prefer to balance it with a low-grade FCS or high D-II (not elite D-II, because that could be a trap game).EWURanger wrote:...one FBS is enough.
I would also agree with this. However, there are at least two other considerations. One, a D-II would provide good balance on a schedule featuring an FBS. Two, applying the same logic to D-IIs that FBS applies to us sounds kinda-sorta hypocritical.EWURanger wrote:I'm personally not a huge fan of scheduling DII's - would much rather see us playing quality FCS teams but that's becoming harder in the west.
