So, are you gonna say something or are you a fan of Columbus?

Your obsession with me is a bit creepy. :tothehand:

If there was any doubt as to whether she was savvy enough, tough enough or smart enough to carry the mantle of Vice President, she put those fears to rest tonight. She took on Barack Obama DIRECTLY on every issue and exposed... She did it with warmth and humor, and came across as the every-person....it's becoming mroe and more clear that she was a genius pick for McCain."

Listen, shit for brains, the greatest threat to our freedom aint the liberals, its the freaking christians. When the catholics aint front page news (pedophile scandal, bigotry against gays, and Columbus Day) I'll quit callin em out.

Columbus Day is a catholic-inpired holiday, started by a group who quite possibly are the biggest bunch of assholes ever known - the Knights of Columbus.

They're proud of Columbus!

Bill Simmons had a good idea today... drop Columbus Day, move Labor Day to the first Monday in October and make September 11 a National Remembrance Holiday.

FWIW I don't get Columbus Day off. The City of Baltimore does. I had to go to my company office, to work on my City projects. Not everyone gets Columbus day off, in fact, I bet if you don't work for a government or an Italian, I would guess most do not have off. :|

Agreed - heck, even all the schools around here still had school yesterday. It is governments or Italians that really celebrate Columbus Day these days. Of course, America has been commemorating Columbus's landing for two or 3 centuries before any religious aspect (i.e. Catholic) even came into the conversation, but D1B says it's all about those evil Catholics so how could he be wrong?

Taking one's particular religious beliefs, any religion too seriously, or worse yet, to literally is what causes all the problems.

Religions are not designed by "Gods", they are designed by humans, and in the beginning for good reason, to point in the direction of civilizing an uncivilized populace. That was thousands of years ago.

There is still good to be gotten from your religion, and any religion. Trouble is, it has been bastardized by special interests, yeah the same old shit, money and power. Those who wear it on their shirtsleves, and beat their bretheren over the head with it to justify their selfish needs, or to hold others hostage with their rhetoric are bones to be chewed by our own D1B, and they deserve it.

If a person needs religion to use as a guide to living in harmony with others while sharing common social values that they wish to adhere to is the proper use of that religion.

I for one, feel that I have a faith. That is a faith in my fellow man, that there is good to be had in others, and that we can work our problems out eventually for the benefit of all without preying on others.

I fully accept my own inevitable mortality, and I don't need any invisible or make believe friends or ghosts to make that truth sugar coated, this is my choice. And I think it is healthy, mature, and responsible.

I have also found that many in the various forms of clergy agree with my assessment, and still they tend their flocks as their flocks want to be tended.

Faith is the key, get it however you can, but if it is a burden on others, or it belittles others, and especially if it insists on you giving it your money, then it is a religion and nothing more.

Taking one's religion literally or too seriously is akin to not seeing the forest for the trees.

Columbus was a devout catholic. Spain was as catholic as it gets in the 1500's, it still is. One would think, with how noble a belief system catholocism is, and the fact that it's christ's true church, they would have acted more jesus-like to their victims, who were very jesus-like.

That being said, Columbus and the genocide he symbolizes is not worthy of praise. It's demeaning to native americans and it needs to go.
