LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Southern Baptist leader who is calling for Christians to avoid yoga and its spiritual attachments is getting plenty of pushback from enthusiasts who defend the ancient practice.

Southern Baptist Seminary President Albert Mohler says the stretching and meditative discipline derived from Eastern religions is not a Christian pathway to God.

Mohler said he objects to "the idea that the body is a vehicle for reaching consciousness with the divine."

"That's just not Christianity," Mohler told The Associated Press.

Mohler said feedback has come through e-mail and comments on blogs and other websites since he wrote an essay to address questions about yoga he has heard for years.

"I'm really surprised by the depth of the commitment to yoga found on the part of many who identify as Christians," Mohler said.

Yoga fans say their numbers have been growing in the U.S. A 2008 study by the Yoga Journal put the number at 15.8 million, or nearly 7 percent of adults. About 6.7 percent of American adults are Southern Baptists, according to a 2007 survey by the Pew Research Center Forum on Religion & Public Life.

Mohler argued in his online essay last month that Christians who practice yoga "must either deny the reality of what yoga represents or fail to see the contradictions between their Christian commitments and their embrace of yoga."

He said his view is "not an eccentric Christian position."

Other Christian leaders have said practicing yoga is incompatible with the teachings of Jesus. Pat Robertson has called the chanting and other spiritual components that go along with yoga "really spooky." California megachurch pastor John MacArthur called yoga a "false religion." Muslim clerics have banned Muslims from practicing yoga in Egypt, Malaysia and Indonesia, citing similar concerns.

Muslims, Christians, what's the diference, anyway!!?!?!?

Yoga in and of itself (i.e. the stretching) has NOTHING to do with any religion. It's the meditation involved that's the issue. Eastern meditation seeks to clear the mind. Christian meditation (yes, the Bible DOES talk about meditation) seeks to fill the mind with Christ. If the meditation portion of yoga is replaced with Christian thought, there's no big deal. One gets the physical benefits of yoga AND draws closer to Christ.

Once again, a guy with a big mouth becomes a blowhard over nothing....

How can you fill the mind with Christ if it's first not cleared?

It's been my experience that typically the less religious someone is or perhaps the less "caught up with" their religion, the more christlike they are.

If jesus existed today he would be like a George Clooney, or Paul Newman (when he was alive) or perhaps Obama.
"Sarah Palin absolutely blew AWAY the audience tonight. If there was any doubt as to whether she was savvy enough, tough enough or smart enough to carry the mantle of Vice President, she put those fears to rest tonight. She took on Barack Obama DIRECTLY on every issue and exposed... She did it with warmth and humor, and came across as the every-person....it's becoming mroe and more clear that she was a genius pick for McCain."

to an extent, Id agree with that, and without getting into the cliche "true Christianity isnt a religion, its a lifestyle" too much, thats still one of the main things that does seperate Christianity from other religions. Christianity can very easily be a "religion" to people (and by that I mean it more in the sense as someone who might say 'I attend football games religiously') and thats a shame, because TRUE Christianity is living like Christ, not jamming your beliefs down others throats but saying heres what I believe to be true, and applying it to your lifestyle.

Like the 10 commandments from the bible, can easily be taken as rules to live by (which is religion) and then people say (and id agree) who wants Christianity, its just a bunch of rules. But they are more like "hey, these are 10 things that if you apply them in your life, your life would be better." Like no one can honestly say that life would be easier if we went around sleeping with eachothers wives and killing the men who slept with our wives, and I think we can all agree relationships with our parents are easier if we honor them rather than disrespecting them. If that all makes sense, IDK
