Re: Boneheaded decisions youve seen at games?
11-2 going into that game. (One loss was to A&M, 44-31, who was pretty good that year) All American PK, Payton Candidate at QB, came from 19 down in the third to win by 16, 2 weeks before. Ball on our 40. Our now coach was arguing with Bailiff on the sidelines. They put the camera on our PK and he was saying What the Fuck?
There are no words...and its infamous.

I remember watching that as it was the night before the ASU/Furman semifinal and absolute shock around the stadium was priceless.
Of course that's the only way UNI could finally break their semifinal jinx as it was pretty much given to them.

SuperHornet wrote:Not having seen this game, I'd want to see what USU's personnel situation was at the time. If their kicker was injured and none of the backups had any leg, I could see punting. The problem with this is that given the fact that at FBS, one is allowed over 100 players. (Of course, not all are schollie players.) That implies that one could have more than one kicker. In this situation, one is looking at a 41-yard FG. That's not always a chip shot, so if one is on a backup kicker, I could see punting. But one had BETTER make sure the punter understands that he MUST kick to the corner. Hanging it over the goalline is just asking for a four-yard net.weberwildcat wrote:No FG?
A few yr's ago I saw Utah State punt it on the opposing team's 24 yard line. LOL!! That was hilarious. Why go for a FG when you could just punt it in the back of the endzone and move the ball up 4 yrds. ha ha
USU's kicker was horrible; couldn't make anything. After that game the coach had an open try out to the student body for a new kicker. Sadly its true. If there was a backup kicker he must have sucked really bad. I am not sure about injuries but don't think there was. In that same season it took until there 5th game to get on the scoreboard. LOL

Throwing the ball from the Kentucky 28 yard line on second down an 8 with less than 30 seconds left on the clock and 3 points down just to get it intercepted.

1983 Delaware-West Chester game. West Chester is punting with hopes of pinning the Hens inside the 20. The ball lands inside the 20 and is bouncing towards the endzone. 10 yards to go...5 yards...4...3...2...1... and then the UD punt returner falls on it at the 1.
Re: Boneheaded decisions youve seen at games?
I generally don't like to publicly criticize my Gardner-Webb football coaches. But if you kick or punt the football to Charleston Southern's #3, Gerald Stevenson you better be prepared to watch him make your kickoff/punt team look silly.

He ran two back on us last Saturday and he actually ran more than that but Charleston Southern had some stupid penalties that brought the ball back. Kick or punt the ball out of bounds. Better to give them decent field position than give them 2 TDs. Our D did an excellent of stopping CSU last weekend. Put the game on their shoulders and they will take it.

Re: Boneheaded decisions youve seen at games?
Stevenson has made more than a few KO/Punt return teams look foolish over the last 4 years. Wish he was another 6 inches taller and around 210 with his speed and moves, he would be a high draft pick next year for sure.

Going for it on 4th and 1 from your own 30 or so late in the 4th quarter... with the lead....

No, the dumbest move wasn't going for it on 4th and 1 from their own 30 with 2 minutes left.Skjellyfetti wrote:And the scary thing about that game........ that wasn't even the stupidest call he made.

It wasn't leaving (I forgot who is was) open on 4th and 6 for him to catch and give App 1st and goal four plays later.
And it wasn't trying to center the ball with under 30 seconds left after the long completion.
It was giving the ball to a true freshmen backup running back instead of the senior starter to center the ball with under 30 seconds left.

Funny you should mention that one! It's right at the top of my list.UAalum72 wrote:Ask Yale fans about last year's Harvard game; Yale up 10-7, 2 1/2 minutes left, 4th and 22 on their own 25. Coach calls for a fake punt. Punter runs for 15.

Not a great image, but the LSU Kick Returner took a knee on the one yard line, thinking he was still in the endzone.

I watched a guy at the game take a bong rip then he shotgunned a beer while holding in the bong rip, he puked all over his girlfriend when he blew out the smoke. It happened right before going into the second half.

In 2006 Cal Poly at San Jose St., Poly wins the toss and elects to "kick" not "defer". Poly kicks off to open the game and then kicks off to open the second half.
Re: Boneheaded decisions youve seen at games?
Those are all good, but NOTHING compares to the All-Time Greatest Boneheaded decision of college football history. Late November, Charleston, SC, 2005. Charleston Southern vs Coastal Carolina. Huge game- CSU has 1 BSC loss, CCU 0 losses, this is last game of season, so CSU has a chance to win first conference title ever by beating CCU, and CCU has chance to win another BSC title, and finish 10-1 and go to the NCAA Playoffs.
4th quarter. Coastal has ball with about 1:00 to go. 50 yard line. Up 7 points on CSU. Coastal has 1st down and begins to take a knee, "Victory formation". Game over right? Well, they do that on 1st, 2nd, 3rd down. CSU had a couple timeouts and used them.
So it's 4th and 10. 50 yard line. With 10 seconds left. Yes, 00:10 in the 4th, up by 7, 4th and 10 at the 50. You PUNT, right? Well, CSU had a phenomenal punt returner that year, and he had ran back 5-6 that season. Coastal could either kick to him, where he'd get the punt around the 15-20 (Good odds of making the tackle there).....................OR.....they could, and did, the following:
Coastal put their fastest player, a WR who ended up in NFL I think, at punter. In punt formation. They snap it to him. The idea is to run backwards, stay in bounds, let time expire, and run out the back of the end zone. Give CSU as safety, Coastal will win by 5, then go to playoffs, win BSC, etc, etc.
Player takes the snap, and runs backwards with time expiring. CSU's players chase him, "Stay in their lanes" and funnel him towards the pylon of the goal line. The CCU player, in a moment that nearly gave CCU's head coach a stroke/heart attack/aneurism/kidney failure/blown ACL all in one motion...............ran out of bounds at the 1 yard line........with 1.5 seconds to play.
CSU had 1 play to put it into OT. And All-Big South QB Colin Drafts did just that, with a miracle TD throw.
CSU won the game in overtime. CCU finished 9-2. Didn't go to playoffs.
The 2005 Big South Conference Championship Trophy sits on CSU's campus now.
Rumors on the SC coast were that the CCU WR didn't leave his dorm room for almost 2 weeks after that. The CSU highlight film from 2005 captured CCU and CSU's head coaches shake hands after the game, and the CSU coach's facial expression was that of consoling someone dealing with a funeral, both coaches still in shock. Most of the CCU team stood on the sideline as CSU tore down their goal posts. They looked like they had just...........
I'm a CSU fan obviously. Was there for the game. But I've debated this, and it truly is hard to express what a miracle, and travesty of a decision, that last play in regulation was. It is in my opinion the most boneheaded decision in the history of college football.

How about fielding a kickoff 9 yards deep in the end zone and running it out the back for a safety!

Re: Boneheaded decisions youve seen at games?
I got a new one.
Illinois State is down 42-14 @ UNI with 6 seconds left in the game with the ball at their own 27 yard line...ish....
Instead of just running the ball, or taking a knee, their coach thinks that a 70 yard hail mary pass will win the game, or something like that. So, they go 5 wide and run the play. UNI's pass rush forces the QB to scramble, starts to wind up to unleash the ball and gets absolutely drilled by a UNI d-lineman, fumbles the ball and UNI recovers with no time left on the clock.
Oh, here's the kicker of the story. Illinois State's QB was very very slow getting up, and was in a ton of pain because of the way he was planted on the hit.
Good call ISUR....stay classy.

Although I have only seen bits and pieces in highlight reels, I'm pretty sure the end of the IA/WI game yesterday involved at least one poor decision.
Thread-killer extraordinaire.
