I've seen some of the newb ODU posters calling their team Big Blue. Yeah, good luck with that. The line starts back there.

Guess you can't read my intentions with that. There is only one THE Death Valley, that being LSU. Just like with Miami being THE U.

Southern Cal is the only school to have stopped another school from using their abbreviation. Why a federal judge told South Carolina "You may be the University of South Carolina, but you can't use USC...only Souther Cal can use USC" is beyond me...and stupid as fuck

We've been "Big Blue" in basketball for years. Our mascot is called big blue. Any other mascots have the name big blue?93henfan wrote:How many Death Valleys are there in football? And how many Big Blues?

Big Blue is in first place right now in the Capital One Mascot Challenge.
And aren't you guys the hens? Come on now, with a nickname like that, you really shouldn't talk about anyone else's nickname.
You CHOSE to call yourself hens.

Yup, we've been Big Blue for as long as I remember. Nothing new. As Razor said, our fans and the media have always called our teams that for, from what I can tell talking to alum, quite a number of years now...
edit: as for "Death Valley," I always knew Clemson's stadium as "Death Valley" before finding out LSU's stadium had the same nickname. I bet you if Clemson became more successful than LSU, your kids would grow up thinking that Clemson was THE "Death Valley." The same goes for any nickname shared by different schools.

Re: Epic Photo(s)
As the other posters have said, Old Dominion has used the term "Big Blue" in an official capacity going back to at least the mid '70's. How many Big Blues are there out there? Michigan's official slogan is "Go Blue" not "Go Big Blue", however, in some instances, "Big Blue" is used incorrectly. I have heard "Big Blue" used referring to Kentucky, but I don't know how official that is. Same with the New York Giants and IBM. Any others out there at the D-1 level?93henfan wrote:How many Death Valleys are there in football? And how many Big Blues?

By the way, we picked up a receiver that the Hens were after. "Spellman is the first player to give ODU a commitment this season and said he picked the Monarchs over Delaware."

Re: Epic Photo(s)
If you read Wiki or any of the answer-type websites, it appears that Clemson was the first Death Valley, then LSU began referring to their stadium as Deaf Valley, then people started mistakenly calling it Death Valley and the name stuck.
But who really cares? LSU has been more successful, so if they want to be the second Death Valley, go for it.
Clemson's Howard Rock came from the actual Death Valley, btw, which is how it got its name (in addition to it being in a valley and having cemetary in close proximity), well before LSU stole it.

I'm sure it's been brought up before but is it really that difficult to match the purple in the helmets with the purple in the pants? Panthers, Vikings...T-Dog wrote:I was beside the guy who took this picture. This is post-Michigan.

You wouldn't think so, but it is. UNI has probably a hundred or so shirt designs out there that are purple...no more than 2 or 3 of the designs have identical purples.
We got new home uniforms the next season (I believe) and got refinished helmets that matched. We got new uniforms again this year that match the helmets very well.
In person those two colors were probably pretty similar, but being a night game with TV lights and camera flash and different kinds of materials, there is no chance in hell to get those to match in a picture

Stop with the excuses, they don't match. In 2003 UD's helmets and jerseys did not match. The helmet company was the one who effed it up. When they came out in 2004 it was fixed.clenz wrote:In person those two colors were probably pretty similar, but being a night game with TV lights and camera flash and different kinds of materials, there is no chance in hell to get those to match in a picture

They do now. The jerseys and helmets now are different than they were circa 2005. Yes, the design on the helmet is the same, but it is a different purple89Hen wrote:Stop with the excuses, they don't match. In 2003 UD's helmets and jerseys did not match. at this point in the season, I'm willing to see them give it a try, because trying to move the ball the conventional way isn't working. Maybe it can cut down on penalties.clenz wrote:I'd imagine it's pretty tough to make cuts without being able to touch the ground....tampajag wrote: hasn't helped us win any games though
