Griz - NAU Game
Re: Griz - NAU Game
Good game, Jacks. Good game, Griz. Both teams made mistakes but both teams also played well enough to win. Griz just got that big play when they needed it. Bleeping Wa-Griz mystique. Kudos.
This last play of the game thing going two years in a row is proving for some exciting, if not nervous tic-inducing, football. Hope to see the Griz next year in Flagstaff. Til then, best of luck to UofM.

It's just a game guys....it's just a game. Step back...breath...exhale.
Willie - I have never heard dbackjon crying on here/egriz. I do my best to be as objective as possible as well. Questionable calls go both ways. But NAU didn't lose today or last year because of truly bad calls. They lost because they didn't make that one big play when they absolutely needed it. The U of M did. End of story. Was the incomplete pass/safety/fumble for a touchdown by the Griz rookie QB a close call. Yes. But that's part of the game.

I am now relegated to having to type becuase I can barely talk now. What a crazy, hard game to watch, but fun to be in the stands watching it none the less. Great game by NAU, glad you left us some time on the clock. Our offense must only work against the prevent defense And that safety call was crazy, one new way to screw up on special teams that I didn't know we could.

I don't think anyone knew that could happen, probably because it wasn't supposed to. Pflugrad said on the postgame that Dick Arbuckle—who has been a special teams coach for decades—has never seen that call before.GrizFanStuckInUtah wrote:And that safety call was crazy, one new way to screw up on special teams that I didn't know we could.

AS far as I can tell, it was the correct call.Mvemjsunpx wrote:I don't think anyone knew that could happen, probably because it wasn't supposed to. Arbuckle - is that your current special teams coach?

Very hard fought game. I had a bad feeling when NAU scored too quickly to go ahead.

Yes, he's UM's special teams coach.dbackjon wrote:

How was it the correct call? He caught the kickoff in the endzone & ran out the back. How is that not a touchback? Unless there's some difference between running out the back & kneeling in the endzone, which I've never ever heard of at any level of football anytime anywhere.

Montana returner Nguyen caught a high kickoff deep in the end zone - had possession for three steps, went out to the back of the end zone?siuham wrote:I was still at work and missed it, what actually happened?dbackjon wrote:

Well, Arbuckle is coaching the worst special teams unit I have seen at Montana, or at any Big Sky school, so you probably don't want to listen to him.
Nguyen had possession, went out of the BACK OF THE ENDZONE, with possession. That is a safety, by rule.
Rarely happens, because most returners, when 6 yards deep in the endzone, have the sense to let a head high ball go out the back on it's own power.

What difference is there in going out the back versus kneeling down? There isn't a difference as far as a pick/fumble recovery is concerned as far as I know.

With the kneel down, you are giving up - specific rule for that. With a return, it is a live ball. Just like a NAU player could have tackled Nguyen in the end zone, if he didn't kneel down.Mvemjsunpx wrote:Prove it.dbackjon wrote:

Re: Griz - NAU Game
That's just stupid. Peter Nguyen, despite the fumbles (which are totally his fault, not the coaches), still is among the national leaders in punt return average. His kick return at the end set up the winning score (why did NAU's kicker line drive it right to him?). Brody McKnight is one of the best kickers in FCS.dbackjon wrote:

To say the Griz have one of the worst special teams units in the history of the Big Sky is complete idiocy.

Running into your own man, coverage, fumbles, etc. Not a good special team.
Re: Griz - NAU Game
If the ball goes out of the back of the end-zone......whether it is ran out, or the ball itself goes out (see the snap that went over EWU's punters head last year against the Griz), makes it a safety, period.

If the ball itself goes out the back on a kickoff...it is most definitely NOT a safety. It is indeed a touchback!EWURanger wrote:If the ball goes out of the back of the end-zone......whether it is ran out, or the ball itself goes out (see the snap that went over EWU's punters head last year against the Griz), makes it a safety, period.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. - Coach Finstock

Because it that case, it was never in play. Has to be touched by a player after the kickoff to be in play.
